HIGHLIGHTS
The Floretta K. Lauber Museum Education Center was used as a site for the filming of an
episode for the NBC show This is Us in January. The Museum continues to distribute educational
kits to the community this year.
COLLECTIONS
Curator Stevy Acevedo and volunteer Rebecca Andersen continue reorganizing items in the
Museum’s collection space. This has allowed for more collections to fit in the limited collection
space available in the Museum.
The Museum has been awarded the California Revealed Description Assistance
grant from the California State Library to fund a paid internship for six months to
work with one of the Museum’s collections. Ms. Andersen has been hired once
again to conduct the inventory, curation, and digitization of the Floretta K. Lauber
Collection, which consists of approximately 900 items. This project will be for six
months and be completed by June 2022. It is the Museum’s goal to then nominate
the collection to the California Revealed digital repository for the California State
Library website.
The Museum has a new Collection and Curation Graduate Intern,
Patrick Michael, who is working on the inventory, curation and
digitization of the Dr. Richard Cordano Collection, a World War II
Veteran and previous Principal at Arcadia High School. Under the
supervision of Curator Acevedo, Mr. Michael will be receiving
experience in collections and exhibitions while receiving graduate
credit from the California State University of Fullerton.
The Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection transcription project, consisting of 704 letters and
postcards, is still being transcribed by the virtual community volunteers on FromThepage. There
2
have been 90 collaborators in this project, and so far this year have completed 144 hours.
Community members are still encouraged to participate:

Volunteer Tola Livesey continues to work on the organization, digitization, and curation of the Gilb
Museum’s Archive, specifically the City of Arcadia Newsletters. She continues to inventory these
items to the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. Ms. Livesey is also working with Curator Acevedo on
updating the Museum’s Collection and Archive Policy.
Volunteer Deborah Cordano continues to transcribe the Camp Santa Anita Letter Collection. The
collection consists of 192 letters written to and from Private Robert Beck during his time stationed
at Camp Santa Anita during World War II.
Volunteer Jonathan Ornelas has been digitizing and inventorying the Brookover Collection onto
the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. The collection highlights the lives of Henry Stanley Brookover
and his son Stanley Mansfield Brookover who used to own a chicken farm in Arcadia in the early
1900’s.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Edwin Anderson, on behalf of Mrs. Carlene Miller, donated a framed photograph of the Ross
Balloon school as well as the Honorable Discharge from the United State Army document
from Mr. Harry Miller.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
The Gilb Museum continues to provide free educational kits every other month for the year 2022.
In the months of January and February, Ms. Alberto-Shaikh created the All About Art kit, which
included all the necessary items for children to create art pieces while also learning about the
public artwork around the City of Arcadia. So far, the Gilb Museum has distributed 161 All About
Art kits.
Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh has been very active in providing school
programs to local schools in the Arcadia Unified School District. This school semester she will
continue to conduct school programs at Camino Grove Elementary, Longley Way, Hugo Reid,
and Highland Oaks. The Museum has received nine requests to do school programs on site at
the schools for Spring of 2022, including two assemblies focused on exploring the history of the
Santa Anita Japanese Assembly Center. One of these assemblies will take place at Foothills
Middle School in partnership with the Foothills Middle School PTA. The assembly taking place at
Arcadia High School on February 18 is in partnership with the Arcadia Civic Youth Council.
Ms. Alberto-Shaikh has also been very active in conducting Girl Scout programs at the Museum
to local Girl Scout troops. She has received several requests for Girl Scout programs beginning
in March of 2022. Programs will explore topics such as Playing the Past, Inside Government, and
Celebrating Community. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh also will be conducting a Collection and Hobbies
program with a local Boy Scout Troop in March.
The Museum received two Speakers Bureau requests from Morning Star Senior Living in
Pasadena. Curator Acevedo is working with Dale Carter and Laura Henneforth to schedule their
presentations for the months of March and April.
Museum Staff is preparing for the Preservation Workshop Series in 2022 which will include
workshops and demonstrations on how people can preserve their personal and family history.
The Textile Preservation Workshop on January 22 needed to be rescheduled for March 12. In
the workshop, people will learn all about the preservation methods used by museum professionals
to preserve textiles. There is limited space and supplies, so registration is required to attend the
Workshops. Information on how to register can be found on the Museum’s website.

ADMINISTRATION
The Museum was awarded the nomination of the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection from California
Revealed digital repository on the California State Library website which provides online access
to materials documenting the state’s history, art, and cultures. Curator Acevedo and Intern Ms.
Andersen will be working on this project.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) canceled their January meeting and conducted their
February board meeting virtually via Zoom. The Museum Staff discussed current and ongoing
projects with the Board members. The FAM Board discussed their annual donation to the
Museum. Their donation will help fund programs and events in 2022 and they approved to give
$13,000 to the Museum. The FAM Board will be presenting the donation at the City Council
meeting on March 1. Their next meeting will take place on March 3.
Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia Unified School District PTA meeting via Google Meet
on February 1. At the meeting, Curator Acevedo promoted events and programs currently taking
place at the Museum.
Curator Acevedo continues to work on the City Public Artwork
Project, including the inventory of murals, plaques, statues, and
memorials around the city. The Museum is working with Silverlake
Conservation to get an Arcadia Public Art Collection Survey. The
survey will be conducted to assess the artworks current condition and
develop a maintenance plan for the collection and a budget will be
developed as part of the conservation plan report.
On January 18-19, NBC Production filmed a scene for This
is Us, Season 6. They utilized the Floretta K. Lauber
Museum Education Center as the site of a rural hospital for
their show. Museum and Library Staff were on site for the
duration of the filming. A donation was made by NBC
Production to the Friends of the Arcadia Museum.
MARKETING
Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh continues to grow the Museum’s audience across
social media. She continues to advertise Museum programs, kits, and more. On February 13, Ms.
Alberto-Shaikh had a #SuperBOWL themed social media series that featured bowls from the Gilb
Museum’s collections.
The number of subscribers that have signed up to receive the Museum’s monthly newsletter
through Mailchimp continues to grow. The Museum promotes its current and future programs,
collections, and exhibits to community members. Community members can subscribe to the
newsletter on the Museum’s website.
Curator Acevedo and previous Getty Intern Michele Huizar created
a new Curator’s Corner video to highlight the 80th Anniversary of
Executive Order 9066, on February 19, which led to the
incarceration of Japanese Americans and the creation of the Santa
Anita Japanese Assembly Center at Santa Anita Park during World
War II. Getty Intern Michele Huizar discussed her special project in
the summer of 2021 which included the creation of a kiosk in the
Museum's permanent exhibit space.

The Gilb Museum will also hold a virtual volunteer appreciation meeting
on Saturday, February 19 to celebrate the volunteers and interns who
completed over 100 hours in the year 2021. Volunteers who completed
over 100 volunteer hours will be awarded a certificate and Gilb Museum

Museum Staff continues to conduct meetings for the Faces of Arcadia
Oral History Teen Internship Project. The teen internship consists of
eight teens that have previously been teen volunteers at the Museum. The Gilb Museum Staff
