Although the L.A. County Health Department had lifted some restrictions on face coverings in February, for the Library to do so would require staff to check proof of vaccination at the door and/or offer Covid-19 testing, both with sizable price tags. As a result, the Library opted in February, along with most all of the other public libraries in the area, to keep face covering restrictions in place until these last restrictions were lifted. The Southern California Library Cooperative, a consortium of 40 independent city, county, and special district libraries, has elected a new interim Executive Director, Heather Cousins. The Southern California Library Cooperative provides grant opportunities through the CA State Library, discounted prices for vendors, and is a resource-sharing network that reduces duplication. It also operates the Interlibrary Loan and Delivery service between member libraries. The Library received three bids for the RFID project and a city committee was formed to review the formal bids based on the Request for Proposal; the final choice will then go to City Council for their approval. Adult Programs, Classes, Technology Literacy, and Events: Four patrons watched and discussed The Man Who Sold His Skin at The Movies You Missed mid-month. Bookish met on February 22 and discussed Weather, by Jenny Offill. The Library collaborated with the Pasadena Humane Society at the beginning of February to offer an educational program about local animal services and resources that drew 72 attendees. Free pet ID tags were provided to participants. In anticipation of this program and throughout February, the community banded together and donated much-needed blankets, towels, and egg cartons to the Pasadena Humane Society. Teen Programing: Teen Zone kicked off in February, offering teens a safe and fun space to hang out after school, with 54 teens attending this first month. Make-it or Bake-it showcased paper quilling. Students watched a teen-created online tutorial and took home craft kits to create their very own paper quilled heart. Children’s Programming and Services: There were four early literacy programs hosted via Zoom with 19 in attendance in February. Staff hosted a Virtual Hearty Book Party. The 12 attendees listened to Valentine stories, took part in fun activities, and made two heart-themed February Activity Visitors: 18,560 Holds Processed: 1,691 Physical Items Checked Out: 32,609 eBooks/Audiobooks/Magazines Downloaded: 3,615 Virtual Programs/Attendance: 15/435 Passports Issued: 121 2 crafts. Children’s Services staff, with the help of teen volunteers, prepared and distributed 200 craft kits in celebration of Lunar New Year. Each kit contained paper supplies to make three different lanterns. In celebration of Black History Month, 148 Inventor-themed kits were also distributed; the accompanying recording received 81 views. Customer Service: Information Systems’ team of three Computer Aides and Supervisor answered more than 244 computer/technical questions from patrons and assisted the public with 950 public computer sessions, 1,086 print jobs, and the use of the Microfiche station, public copiers, and the public Wi- Fi network. The 2021 tax forms continue to arrive and have been placed out for easy patron access. Adult Services staff proactively shares inventory status information on social media. Passport Services processed 121 passports in February. Account Services handled 1,691 holds and checked out 32,609 items. Collections: The Children’s Services Library Technician enhanced each Read to Grow Storytime Kit to now include either a flannel, puppet, or puzzle set; updated the files to reflect the new additions; and also worked with staff from Technical and Account services to make the kits available for patron checkout. Children’s Services staff have been weeding the easy reader and the nonfiction animal and nature collections to get ready for the library-wide RFID project. The most popular item in the Adult collection this month was Cang Lang Xing, by Zhiyunxiaotiandao. The most popular title in the Children’s collection this month was the graphic novel Yo-kai Watch, by Noriyuki Konishi. For teens, the top title was the graphic novel Black Butler, by Yana Toboso. Cataloging and Acquisition staff continued working on the Database Authority project and deleted more items than usual from the collection due to the preparation for the RFID project and the annual withdrawal of older magazines. Facilities and Technology: Information Systems staff continued to work with City IT to replace the last remaining Windows 7 PC’s located in the Account Services public facing desks. There were 2,768 unique public Wi-Fi users, and a total of 2.27TB of data downloaded and uploaded during February, compared to 2,518 unique public Wi-Fi users, and a total of 2.05TB of data downloaded and uploaded in January. There were 4,890 visits to the Library Catalog, local web documents and online databases. There were 2,884 unique visitors and 6,755 visits to the Library home page. Information Systems staff continue to update several of the library department web pages with new content. Sally Snider thanked staff for providing them with the photographs that helped guide the restoration. Library staff attended the AUSD PTA Council meeting and the Arcadia High School 3 meeting. Adult Services staff attended grant-planning, Summer at Your Library, and Arcadia Historical Society meetings. The Children’s Services Librarian attended the Building Equity Based Summers through California Libraries and Communities meeting. She also received a note of gratitude from the coordinator of the Arcadia Unified School District’s Middle School Wellness Summit, who wrote, “Thank you so much for all your incredible resources! Our students and parents really appreciate it! We appreciate your collaboration for our Middle School Wellness Summit!” Children’s Services staff partnered with teen volunteers, Nicole M. and Autumn Z., who worked with Children’s Services to plan, design, and install a new display for the main entry bulletin in the Children’s Room. All the illustrations were hand-drawn by the volunteers and feature characters from well-known children’s books, including Winnie the Pooh, The Cat in the Hat, and Where the Wild Things Are. The Holly Avenue Elementary School Library Aide, Iwona Engl, installed a bulletin display featuring artwork designed by students who created their own renditions of selected children’s book covers. The Children’s Services Principal Librarian hosted an in-person orientation for 18 teen volunteers who will be assisting with the monthly in-person Book Buddies programs that will begin in March. The Teen Librarian participated in Book Balance, a wellness-centered YA book discussion group, that was hosted in Arcadia High School’s Library Media Center. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chair Carter ROLL CALL: Chair Miriam Carter; Trustees Barbara Delphey, Elizabeth Renfrew, Carlton Seaver, Alice Wang; Councilmember Paul Cheng (City Council Liaison); Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley (Secretary); Library Services Managers Roger Hiles, Pat Smith ABSENT – None PUBLIC COMMENTS – None REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS: Trustee Renfrew reported that there are three or four new volunteers in the Friends Book Store; they will be able to expand the Book Store’s hours as volunteer vacancies are filled. The Friends did not meet in January and are scheduled to meet again in March. Councilmember Cheng reported on current issues facing the City Council, including the deadline to call for a special election, the six-month report to City Council on homelessness in Arcadia, and the redistricting project. REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items Director’s Update: Director Bradley referred her update to the items below. Monthly Statistical Report: January 2022: January’s statistics were adversely affected by the omicron variant of the COVID virus. Passports continue to do well. Monthly Report Narrative: January 2022: The Director reviewed the Winter Reading program and noted that planning has already begun for this year’s Summer at Your Library program. The goal this year is to bring patrons back to the library through major programming. Tax forms are beginning to arrive, they are still in demand even though they are available online. Financial Report: January 2022: Director Bradley discussed the mid-year budget review, noting that the library is still on target generally, but, because landscaping costs increased by $8,000, spending will exceed the current budget. Staff Update: Seventeen staff members were out at various times during the month of January due to COVID, exposure to COVID, or other illness. Eduardo Topete, a part-time Passport Clerk, was promoted to the vacant part-time Library Technician position in Children’s. Ann Morrice was selected for the part-time Library Technician vacancy in Account Services. She began her career at Arcadia Public Library as a part-time Library Aide. Staff Informational Report on Automatic Renewal: The project continued to experience technical problems but is close to completion. Library staff continue to look at additional improvements to patrons’ experience with library circulation. Security Cameras: Director Bradley reviewed the Library’s proposal to add security cameras throughout the building. Access to the recordings would probably require a subpoena; the City Attorney will need to weigh in on this issue. The Director would like the Board to consider this and discuss it at the next Board meeting. RFID Project: Three bids have been received and reviewed by the committee. The final choice will go to City Council on March 15. Staff will be asking the Board to consider closing the Library for two weeks during the second half of April. At this time, there will be approximately 188,000 books and 10,000 to 12,000 DVDs, CDs, and other items to be tagged, as well as any items that are checked in during the conversion process. The current plan is to start in early April with the Children’s collection, then close to the public mid-month. There will be three stations the staff will use to process the items. The goal is to finish the project as much as possible by June 1, which begins the Library’s busiest time of the year. Library staff will bring further details to the March Board meeting. Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: The Museum will host a volunteer appreciation program on Saturday, February 19. The Curator continues to apply for grants, especially for funding for a temperature-controlled HVAC system. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can damage items in the collection. The Museum staff are presenting programs on the Santa Anita Assembly Center at Arcadia High School and Foothill Middle School this month. Calendar of Activities for Children’s Services: March 2022: Children’s Services is reintroducing in-person programming this month, offering the annual Read Across America program with the Fire & Police Departments as well as the Book Buddies program, done in conjunction with the Assistance League. Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: February 2022: Adult Services staff hosted a special visit by the Pasadena Humane Society’s Wiggle Waggle Wagon at the beginning of the month. The event was well attended and generated many in-kind donations. Flyers/Articles/Posters/Attachments: In March, Adult Services will host a special talk on early women pioneers in Yosemite Valley by local historian Ed Andersen.
