The Museum participated in the Santa Anita Derby Day 5k as a charity partner. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum will be hosting this year’s Coffee Talk with Dr. Edward Wong on April 30. COLLECTIONS Rebecca Andersen has continued to work on the California Revealed grant as the Museum’s intern, which includes inventorying, curating and digitizing the Floretta K. Lauber Collection. It is the Museum’s goal to then nominate the collection to the California Revealed digital repository on the California State Library website in July. Curator Acevedo and Ms. Andersen attended the California Revealed Meet and Greet meeting via Zoom on March 11. Volunteer Jonathan Ornelas has been assisting in digitizing by photographing the collection. The Museum’s Collection and Curation Intern graduate intern, Patrick Michael, has begun to inventory, curate and digitize the 1984 Summer Olympics Collection. This collection consists of, but is not limited to, books, textiles, photographs, and memorabilia of the Equestrian Games event which took place at Santa Anita Park in 1984. Museum Intern Samantha Young is currently curating, digitizing and cataloging the Arcadia High School Band and Music Club Collection. The collection includes items such as photographs and scrapbooks. Ms. Young has cataloged over 300 items from the collection so far. The Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection transcription project, consisting of 704 letters and postcards, is still being transcribed by the virtual community of volunteers on FromThePage. There have been 104 collaborators in this project, and so far, this year they have completed 1,226 hours. Community members are still encouraged to participate: https://fromthepage.com/gilbmuseum/anthony-w-wilkinson-letter-collection Volunteer Tola Livesey, previously a Museum academic intern, continues to work as a volunteer on the organization, digitization and curation of the City of Arcadia Newsletters. She continues to inventory these items for the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. They range from the early 1960s to the present. Volunteer Deborah Cordano continues to transcribe the Camp Santa Anita Letter Collection. The collection consists of 192 letters written to and from Private Robert Beck during his time stationed at Camp Santa Anita during World War II. Ms. Cordano has completed the transcription of 163 letters so far. 2 An inventory of all items donated during this time period:  Nina Chen, a teen volunteer donated her journal she has kept during the COVID-19 pandemic which will be added to the Museum’s archive.  Stanton Rolf donated 15 copies of photographs of his family's business in Arcadia, The Country Store.  Danielle Walter donated three glass eggs previously used in a chicken farm in Arcadia.  Cheryl Davis donated several items belonging to her parents Kermit and Mitzie Hartzler. Items include photographs of her family’s shoe store Hartzlers, and scrapbooks of when Kermit was the President of the Arcadia Tournament of Roses in 1969-70, and President of the Arcadia Business Association in 1963-64.  Edwin Andersen on behalf of the Arcadia Historical Society donated a World War II Official Civilian Defense Air Raid Warden Helmet.  Gail Marshall, a previous Mayor of Arcadia, donated The History of Santa Anita: The Great Race Place book, The Future of Horse Racing, an oversized book, and building plans for proposed expansion of Westfield Shoppingtown Santa Anita Mall.  Lisa (Hull) Hemstreet donated 10 photographs of her father David Hull, known as the "The Hullabalooer" on the radio.  The Arcadia Historical Society donated five boxes of material, including items from the 1984 Summer Olympics, framed artwork, and historical objects to be used in the Museum’s teaching collection.  Vicki Schiefelbein donated a copy of the Traffic Ordinance No. 728 of the City of Arcadia October 5, 1948 booklet, used by her grandfather, former Police Officer Fred Shafer. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING The Gilb Museum continues to provide free educational kits every other month. For March and April, Ms. Alberto-Shaikh created the Backyards Bird kit, which included all the necessary items for children to learn about the local birds around the City of Arcadia. So far, the Gilb Museum has distributed 259 Backyard Birds kits. Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh has continued to be very active in providing school programs to local schools in the Arcadia Unified School District. In March, Ms. Alberto- Shaikh presented the Then vs. Now program at Longley Way Elementary, Baldwin Stocker Elementary, and Camino Grove Elementary. On April 20 and April 21, she presented the Tongva Time program to Baldwin Stocker Elementary School. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh was also requested by Karalee Nakatsuka of First Avenue Middle School to give a presentation on the Santa Anita Japanese Assembly Center to each of her five social studies classes on May 12. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh has also been active in conducting Girl Scout programs at the Museum for local Girl Scout troops. She received several more requests for Girl Scout programs beginning in March of 2022. Programs will explore topics such as Playing the Past, Inside Government, Good Neighbor, My Family Story, and Celebrating Community. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh also conducted a Collection and Hobbies program with a local Cub Scout Troop in March. The Museum received two Speakers Bureau requests for the month of March and April from Morning Star Senior Living in Pasadena. Dale Carter presented on March 21 and Laura Henneforth was scheduled to present on April 11. 3 Curator Acevedo conducted the first workshop for the Preservation Workshop Series in 2022. It included a presentation and demonstration on textiles to show how people can preserve their personal and family history. The Textile Preservation Workshop on March 12 had six people in attendance where attendees learned all about the preservation methods used by museum professionals to preserve textiles. There is limited space and supplies, so registration is required to attend the workshops. The next workshop will be on Photograph Preservation on June 25. Information on how to register can be found on the Museum’s website. As a charity partner for the Santa Anita Derby Day 5k event, the Gilb Museum was offered a free vendor booth. Director Darlene Bradley and Curator Acevedo participated in the Derby Day 5K on Saturday, April 9 and had the support of three Friends of the Museum Board Members: Esther Reynoso, Ginny Blitz, and Don Fandry, at the booth. They had promotional material to give out and invited people to sign up for the Museum’s monthly newsletter. ADMINISTRATION The Museum has been awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship grant to fund two paid internships: Curatorial and Collections Internship and Education and Public Engagement Internship. Interns will work 40 hours a week for 10 consecutive weeks. Staff was accepting applications until April 2 and is currently interviewing potential candidates for the positions. Curator Acevedo and Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh have been attending Getty Supervisor workshops on March 28 and April 4. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their March board meeting in the Museum Education Center. Museum Staff discussed current and ongoing projects with the Board members. The FAM Board presented their $13,000 donation at the City Council meeting on March 1. In April, the FAM Board conducted their meeting in the Museum Education Center where they also invited four potential new Board Members, including Arlene Okamoto, Annie Bai, Sandy Snider and Maria Leiva. Museum Staff discussed the Santa Anita Derby 5K event with the individuals that said they could help at the event, including Ms. Reynoso, Mr. Fandry and Ms. Blitz. The Board also discussed the Coffee Talk with Dr. Edward Wong on Saturday, April 30 at 10am. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum also conducted their yearly membership drive and received four new Lifetime members. Their next meeting will take place on May 5 in the Museum Education Center. Curator Acevedo continues to work on the City Public Artwork Project, including the inventory of murals, plaques, statues, and memorials. The Museum is working with Silverlake Conservation to get an Arcadia Public Art Collection Survey. The survey by Silverlake Conservation began on March 15 where they assessed the items’ current condition and developed a maintenance plan for the collection and a budget will be developed as part of the conservation plan report. Curator Acevedo was invited by the Arcadia Historical Museum to visit the storage units at Beacons on March 26 to see if there were any items of interest that the Museum could add to their collection. Mr. Lee Shimmin, the person in charge of this project, led a group of volunteers to remove the items out of the lockers and see what items were present. Curator Acevedo took several boxes of items, including framed photographs, items from the 1984 Summer Olympics, and vintage items for the teaching collection. Museum Staff will be attending the California Association of Museums Across California Conference on April 25 at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in downtown Los Angeles. Sessions will include Docent Programs in the Time of COVID and a tour of JANM. 4 Ms. Alberto-Shaikh has also registered to attend a virtual educator’s workshop at the Japanese American National Museum on April 28 on Teaching the Japanese American WWII Experience Through Art. MARKETING Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh continues to grow the Museum’s audience across social media. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh has worked to advertise Museum programs, kits, and more. She also made posts asking adults to apply to be adult volunteers. The campaign received a positive response with two adult volunteer applicants. On April 11 the Gilb Museum participated in #NationalPetDay by posting pictures of staff pets - Nikko, Chloe, and Agnes. On the week of April 17 - 23 the Gilb Museum also participated in #NationalVolunteerWeek by highlighting some of the Museum’s team of volunteers. VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS The Gilb Museum currently has 52 volunteers, including both teens and adults. The Gilb Museum has actively been recruiting teen and adult volunteers. It is currently in the process of onboarding three teen volunteers and one adult. In the month of April, six new teens and one adult volunteer began volunteering at the Museum. For the months of March and April, teen volunteers helped to create educational kits for the 2022 kit series. They also helped to make kits and promotional material for events such as Derby Day, the Kiwanis Club Book and Bicycle Safety Fair, Concerts in the Park, and the Downtown Arcadia Patriotic Festival. Many of the teen volunteers have also been trained to curate collections, scan books and documents, create inventories, and conduct front desk work. During the Arcadia High School’s Spring Break from April 4-8, many teen volunteers worked at the Museum. Many teens were able to be trained in working at the Museum’s front desk, interacting with the public, and more. Volunteer hours: March 1 – April 20: 644 hours FACILITIES Public Works began work on the Carol Libby Garden located outside of the Museum. Some of the grass has been removed, and the fence surrounding the Hugo Reid Family statue was also removed. Wilson Luo from the City IT Department has been working with Library Staff,. Peter Mercado and Roger Hiles, on the Wi-Fi connection Capital Improvement Project at the Gilb Museum and Museum Education Center. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Blitz commented that the Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) attended the March 1 City Council Meeting for the presentation of a check to the Gilb Museum. The FAM will also meet on March 3. City Council Liaison Verlato reported that on March 1, there was a City Council meeting hearing on redistricting. Five redistricting maps are currently under consideration. The Arcadia Women’s Club was awarded Historic Landmark status through the City of Arcadia. The City will also be doing brush clearance in the highlands with the help of the California Conservation Core. The next City Council meeting will be March 15. REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR Director Bradley reported that the Arcadia Public Library is fully open and mask mandates are still in place. REPORT FROM THE CURATOR Curator Acevedo reported that the Museum Education Center was used to film This is Us. NBC donated $7,500 for the filming of the show. The Gilb Museum was awarded the California Revealed Cataloging California grant and has used the funds to hire an intern to catalog and curate the Floretta K. Lauber collection. Graduate intern Patrick Michael is currently working on the cataloging and curation of the Dr. Richard Cordano collection. The Anthony W. Wilkinson collection on FromThePage currently has 99 collaborators and the transcription project is close to being completed through crowdsourcing. Adult volunteer Tola Livesey is currently digitizing the City of Arcadia newsletters, and adult volunteer Deborah Cordano is currently transcribing the Camp Santa Anita collection. The Museum recently accessioned the Henry & Stanley Brookover collection, which is mainly made of items relating to their family chicken farm in Arcadia. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum cancelled their January meeting, their next meeting is on Thursday, March 3. Curator Acevedo is currently working on a City Public Artwork project, where she is assessing the condition and preservation plans with the help of Silverlake Conservation. REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh reported that she continues to distribute educational kits to the community. Currently about 265 have been given to community members since the beginning of 2022. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh has also been very active in conducting school programs to schools in Arcadia, and so far, has 12 programs scheduled with Camino Grove Elementary, Longley Way Elementary, and Baldwin Stocker Elementary. The Gilb Museum also has requests to do five Girl Scout and Cub Scout programs. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh also reported that the Museum received two Speakers Bureau requests and will be hosting a preservation workshop series. For marketing, Ms. Alberto-Shaikh had a #SuperBOWL themed social media series that featured bowls from the Gilb Museum’s collections. Curator Acevedo and Getty Intern Michele Huizar created a new Curator’s Corner video to highlight the 80th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066. The Gilb Museum currently has 45 volunteers, including teens and adults. Currently the volunteers have completed 85.45 volunteer hours in the year 2022. CONSENT CALENDAR a.
