PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSIONERS Any writings or documents provided to a majority of the Senior Citizen Commission regarding any item on this agenda will be made available for public inspection at the Arcadia Recreation Department, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia, California, during normal business hours. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES April 7, 2022 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Penny ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Kathrynn Penny, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope ABSENT: NONE EXCUSED: NONE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club held a board meeting on March 17 and their General meeting will be held on March 25. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming trips. On April 9, members will be attending The Pageant of Our Lord. On April 14, members will be traveling to see Alpacas and lunch at Knotts Berry Farm. On April 26, members will visit the Los Angeles Police Museum in Highland Park and lunch at Tam O'Shanter. On May 21, Vice -Chairperson will be escorting a trip to the Broadway Theater District in downtown Los Angeles. On May 26, members will have a guided tour of Valley Relics Museum in Van Nuys. Commissioner Cao reported March 30, 1933, was the first time Doctor's Day was celebrated. Commissioner Cao asked everyone to please remember to thank those who work in the healthcare field, they appreciate words of kindness. Commissioner Cao reported Methodist Hospital is looking to hire healthcare workers from nurses to technicians. Commissioner Cao said hospitals need staff and are offering referral bonuses. Commissioner Swope reported the Friendship Club is having its yearly Easter bonnet contest at their next meeting. Prizes will be awarded to winners. Commissioner Swope reported an Arcadia Police Officer and K-9 will be presenting at their club in the next few weeks. Commissioner Salazar reported the club celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a light lunch and refreshments. Club members are enjoying group singing and 10-minute exercise breaks. Everyone looks forward to these each week. Commissioner Penny brought information for Mayor Pro Tern Paul Cheng for the senior citizen outreach. Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi responded she will provide the information to Mayor Pro Tern Cheng. Chairperson Salter reported she was happy to volunteer with Dancing through the Decades event and she is looking forward to working less and volunteering more at the Community Center with events. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League had a guest speaker from Foothill Unity Center who talked about all the donations they receive and able to provide assistance to those in need. In March, the Assistance League held a playdate where members enjoyed a picnic and the choice of going for a hike or participate in enjoyable activities. Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box will be closed during spring break. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. AYES: Cao, Martinez, Mazone, Penny, Salter, Salazar, and Swope NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported on past and upcoming events. On March 22, the Billiard Tournament was held at the Community Center. Twelve seniors took part in a single elimination 8-ball tournament. The winners were, Grover Vega in first place, Jerry Phung in second place, and Yuri Cortes in third place. Each winner received a gift card and bragging rights for the year. On April 5, an educational and entertaining afternoon was enjoyed at the Community Center with guest, Ray Briggs. Ray Briggs is the Associate Professor of Music at California State University Long Beach who gave a glimpse into the early days of jazz music to how it has changed. Professor Briggs had a talented piano accompanist, Amy Rowe, who is a professor of piano at Pasadena Conservatory. AARP Tax Volunteers are working hard every Thursday and Friday of each week to process tax returns. AARP volunteers will only be available until Friday, April 15. RS Hernandez informed everyone classes for spring session will begin the week of April 11. RC Hernandez was happy to report the Mahjong program is available every Friday as free play from 1 to 3pm at the Community Center. Mahjong has become extremely popular there will now be a class available for adults to learn how to play the game during the summer session. RS Hernandez reported the senior Monday dance program is picking up with approximately 165 people attending each month. On Friday, April 1, seniors enjoyed an early evening event, the Spring Fling Masquerade Ball. Guests enjoyed an Italian dinner and a live DJ who had everyone dancing until the end of the event. The Luau event has sold out and will take place on April 22. RS Hernandez reminded everyone the Temple City High School Brighter Side Singers will be performing for seniors on Tuesday, April 26, at 1:30pm. Lastly, the Cinco de Mayo event on May 5 is almost sold out. b. Reoort of Recreation and Communitv Services Director RCSD Somogyi reported City staff presented on homelessness and the homeless five point plan at the City Council meeting on March 15. RCSD Somogyi talked about funds about the Homelessness Prevention and Diversion Program and contracting three full-time case managers. The City will send out a request for proposal for Case Management and Housing Navigation services on April 11. RCSD Somogyi reported Supervisor, Emily Buchanan, will be on leave until August 2022. Alma Villasenor will be Acting Recreation Supervisor until Emily's return. RCSD Somogyi reported Project Specialist, Kathy Bernal will be retiring in May. Kathy has been employed with the City for over 20 years. Program Specialist, Pat Lukas will also be retiring in June after 30 years with the City. RCSD Somogyi reported at the next Council Meeting on Tuesday, April 19, City Council will be reorganized with new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tern which will only be in place from April through November. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their 155 Visitors Gift creations and allows the community to purchase one -of -a -kind Monthly Revenue Shop items at a great price. $264 This program assists seniors and their families with issues that Information & affect their quality of life by providing information and referral that 14 Referral Intakes address their daily living concerns. Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from 421 7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. A nutritious meal is provided Monday -Friday for senior citizens. 1,199 Senior Nutrition Program g For many seniors, this is the only hot meal they have on a daily Average/Day 63 basis. Mr. Bunny stopped by on April 4, to greet seniors. Exercise plays a vital role in health and wellness. Classes Classes include line dance, cardio plus, and Zumba. These courses 1,425 contribute to bone density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, the reduction of stress, and improved cardio. Table Tennis is available Monday -Friday, from 1-3:30pm. Table Seniors have the opportunity to drop in and play to gain exercise 57 Tennis and socialization. The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors with Lions Sight free vision care. Prospective clients are screened by senior 3 services staff that make the necessary arrangements for the service. Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four Mahjong people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player 46 secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets Fridays at 1 pm. Monday Dance meets the first, third, and fifth Friday of the Monday month. This activity provides an important social element for 206 Dances senior participants. There is a good ratio of male and female dancers to provide everyone with a dance partner. Monthly bus passes can be mailed to seniors to provide a way Monthly for seniors to purchase their pass. The monthly bus pass is $5 22 Bus Passes per month. Notary services are limited to three signatures or thirty minutes Notary Services per appointment every second and fourth Tuesday of each 7 month. Every month, a non-profit agency presents on senior topics. For Senior the month of April, a seminar on Credit Scams was presented on 66 Seminars April 21. On April 28, the ABC's of Diabetes was presented by Methodist Hospital. AARP Tax Volunteers are available to assist seniors by filing AARP Tax their taxes electronically every Thursday and Friday through April 47 Program 7, 2022. This service is free and available for those with an annual income below $58,000. Volunteens provide assistance for seniors with electronic Tech devices such as cell phones, tablets, e-readers, and computers. 10 Talk This program provides educational opportunities for the seniors and also bridges the gap between seniors and teens. Every Wednesday, from 10am to 2pm, Brock Milhorn from Veteran Peer Access Network is available at the Community Veteran Peer Center to assist Veterans and family members to various 4 Access Network services such as mental health treatment, substance abuse support, temporary and permanent housing, and more. Weekly New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater 60 Movie size screen every Wednesday. Support services include registering members for trips, signing Meeting: 49 Arcadia up new members, and handling the club's correspondence. A Passes Sold: 66 Travelers Club monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss Passengers: 105 Total: 220 future trips and provide a social gathering. On Friday, April 1, seniors enjoyed music from the Alumni Spring Fling Acoustic band and danced the afternoon away. Seniors also 70 Masquerade Ball enjoyed comradery and a delicious Italian meal. Everyone was dressed to impress and received a beaded necklace and a mask. On April 5, an educational and entertaining afternoon was enjoyed with guest, Ray Briggs. Professor Briggs is the Musical Associate Professor of Music at California State University Long Moments Beach. The event gave a glimpse into the early days of jazz 36 Jazz music to how it has changed. Professor Briggs had a talented piano accompanist, Amy Rowe, who is a professor of piano at Pasadena Conservatory. On Friday, April 22, 77 Seniors attended the annual Luau event where seniors were able to enjoy delicious Hawaiian cuisine and Luau enjoy a Polynesian duo performance with traditional music and 77 costume changes. Everyone enjoyed the music and spending time with friends. On April 26, 50 Seniors were in attendance for a performance by the Temple City High School Brighter Side Singers. The Musical performers sang, danced, and brought smiles to all in 50 Moments attendance. Some seniors even got up and danced along to the music from this talented and well known group. On April 29, 39 people participated in a Spring Time themed 39 Bunco Bunco. Everyone enjoyed food, snacks, and raffle prizes. Everyone enjoyed the music and spending time with friends.
