HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 12/02/21SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES DECEMBER 2, 2021 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Vice -Chairperson Mazone called the meeting to order at 4:OOpm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Cao ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Michael Cao, Marilyn Mazone, Kathrynn Penny, and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: Charlene Martinez, Nilo Salazar, and Donna Salter A motion was made by Commissioners Cao seconded by Commissioner Penny and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Martinez, Salazar, and Salter SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Cao reported he was happy to attend the senior Thanksgiving lunch with the Arcadia Fire Department staff serving meals to each participant. The event was well attended at the Community Center. He said it was nice to see everyone happy and interacting. Commissioner Swope reported the Friendship Club had their Thanksgiving lunch with 20 people in attendance. Commissioner Swope said she is looking forward to their Christmas lunch on December 15. Commissioner Penny said she plans to attend Breakfast with Santa and the Snowfest on Saturday, December 4, at the Community Center. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers board meeting was held on November 17 and the general meeting was held on November 18 with 50 members in attendance. On November 4, the Arcadia Travelers attended the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with two full buses and a standby list. On December 5, Vice -Chairperson Mazone will be escorting the Travelers on a day trip to the Pantages Theater to see Hamilton. On December 29, members of the Club will take a day trip to Equestfest with lunch at Tam O'Shanter restaurant. The next board meeting will be held on December 16 and on December 17, after the general meeting the Travelers staff and their guests will have their yearly Christmas lunch at the North Woods Inn restaurant. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Pro Tern Paul Cheng reported the City will celebrate the life of Council Member Roger Chandler at 6pm, prior to the City Council meeting at 7pm and will adjourn in his memory. Council Member Chandler passed away on November 23, 2021. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported applications are being accepted for those who are interested in being appointed to Council Member Chandler's seat. The applicant must be a resident, a registered voter of the City of Arcadia, and reside in District 5. Interviews will be held on December 9, 2021 at 10am. The term is available until November 2022. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of November 4, 2021 Recommended Action: Approve It was agreed the meeting minutes of November 4, 2021 will be tabled to the next meeting on January 6, 2022. 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung reported senior services served over 1,800 individuals during the month of November. Some of the programs and events during the month included over 900 lunch meals served, Monday Dance, a Veterans Day Lunch event, and a few more programs. During the Veterans Day Lunch event, every Veteran received a care box provided by Operation Gratitude. ADRCS Cheung reported there was a Free Flu Shot Clinic at the Community Center on November 9, with 25 individuals registered.. ADRCS Cheung reported seniors will be celebrating the holiday with a Holiday Brunch on Friday, December 3. Santa will be stopping by to greet everyone and seniors will have a chance to take a photo with Santa. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director The City's awaited Breakfast with Santa and Snowfest event will be held on Saturday, December 4. Downtown Arcadia Holiday Fair will also be held on Saturday, December 4. ADRCS Cheung reminded everyone to reach out to their senior clubs and encourage everyone to please nominate a senior of the year for 2021. The applications were distributed during the meeting and are also available online, at the Community Center, and the Recreation Office. Applications are due to Gina Hernandez on or before February 18, 2022. ADJOURNMENT Vice -Chairperson Mazone adjourned the meeting at 4:35pm to January 6, 2022 at 4:OOpm in the Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
