FEBRUARY 3, 2022
SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Nilo Salazar,
Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope
EXCUSED: Kathrynn Penny
A motion was made by Chairperson Salter, seconded by Vice-Chairperson Mazone, and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Penny.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club volunteers held their board meeting on
January 20, at a restaurant. General meetings will resume at the Community Center in April.
Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported the Orient Express trip was canceled due to low sign-ups.
On February 17, there will be a trip to Palm Springs for the Classics of Rock ‘N Roll trip. On
March 22, All That Glitters trip will take place. The very popular SoFi Stadium trip will take place
March 15. On April 9, The Pageant of our Lord will take place. On April 14, a trip to Knott’s Berry
Farm and a visit to Alpacas Hacienda will take place.
Commissioner Cao wished everyone a Happy Lunar New Year.
Commissioner Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club will have a special treat for everyone
for Valentine’s Day, and their popular snack attack day will be held on February 23 where
everyone brings snacks to share.
Commissioner Martinez reported on behalf of the Assistance League the Assisteens is an active
young group. Some of the programs the group is involved in include teen mentoring,
volunteering at the Bargain Box, preparing food during the holidays for families in need, provide
treats and cards for the Golden Age Club, and more. The Assisteens were recently awarded the
Local Heroes Award by the Downtown Arcadia Improvement Association for their community
involvement. Commissioner Martinez reminded everyone the Bargain Box is open Wednesdays
and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm and donations are accepted every Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:30am to 12:30pm.
Commissioner Salazar said he is happy to report the Golden Age Club had their second
meeting where birthdays were celebrated with cake and ice cream. The second officers meeting
will take place in order to discuss the calendar year for 2022. Commissioner Salazar reported
their club’s name has been changed to Golden Senior Club effective immediately.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Mayor Pro Tem Paul Cheng wished everyone a Happy New Year and reported that the last City
Council Meeting will be continued to Monday, February 7 at 6pm. Some of the issues to be
discussed include redistricting, which will form the basis for the next 10 years, the Carol Libby
Courtyard, elections to fill the current City Council vacancy, the new trash and recycling rules
and regulations which is a new California regulation, in which all cities have to comply. Mayor
Pro Tem Cheng reported the next Point-In-Time Homeless Count will take place on Tuesday,
February 22 at 8pm. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported he is happy about the new Smoking
Ordinance and the City’s implementing new restrictions to reduce plastic. Food providers
including restaurants are required to comply with the new regulations.

It was moved Chairperson Salter, seconded by Commissioner Cao, unanimously carried on roll
call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration
took place on January 14. RS Hernandez reminded everyone to spread the word regarding the
new Veteran Peer Access Network contact is Brock Milhorn. Brock is available every
Wednesday from 10am to 2pm to assist veterans and family members connect with services.
RS Hernandez reported tax appointments begin Friday, January 7 for February appointments
for returning customers only. Also, a reminder to all Commissioners to spread the word for
Senior of the Year. Applications are due on or before February 18.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung updated
everyone on Chairperson Salter’s inquiries on February 3, 2022, about the blinking yellow lights
on Baldwin Avenue. After consulting with the City’s Engineer, it was reported back that the City
has replaced and installed five new flashing yellow arrows throughout Arcadia where they were
needed. Also, Chairperson Salter inquired about the trees off Baldwin Avenue near the
Arboretum. It was reported back from Arcadia Public Works Department the trees have been
trimmed by Los Angeles County Public Works. Lastly, ADRCS Cheung reported there will be a
COVID-19 Vaccine and Booster Shot Clinic available at the Community Center on Monday,
February 7 and February 14 from 1-4pm. Anyone can register at www.myturn.ca.gov.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salter adjourned the meeting at 4:34pm to March 3, 2022, at 4:00pm via Zoom.
