SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:05pm.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Swope reported the Friendship Club has

Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Age Club is looking for new members to join. The
Club held nominations for new 2022 officers and he is happy to report he was elected as the
President of the Golden Age Club for 2022. Commissioner Salazar reported the Club held a
Halloween party with prizes for best costume and a light lunch. Commissioner Salazar reported
Club member and Treasurer of 20 years, Toni Armenio, will be celebrating 100 years of age in
December. A special celebration will be held for him. Commissioner Salazar said the Assistance
League will be closed the week of November 22 and also December 19 through January 6.
Commissioner Cao reported he was happy to attend the senior Boo Bash event at the
Community Center. He said it was nice to see everyone excited and to see everyone's
costumes and participating in games and raffles.
Chairperson Salter reported the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage held their 20' anniversary
open house on October 16 and was well attended. Guests enjoyed a behind -the -scenes look at
the Museum's collections. Chairperson Salter said the Assistance League, Las Alas is looking
for new ways to attract new members just like all clubs, they are short staffed on volunteers.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Mayor Pro Tem Paul Cheng thanked the Senior Citizens Commission and the Recreation and
Community Center Department for the professionalism and the prompt attention given the
Veterans Boxes donated to Veterans by Operation Gratitude. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng said the
San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce heard about it and also contacted Operation Gratitude so
they could provide the same service to their Veterans. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng hopes that next
year Veterans throughout the San Gabriel Valley will receive a box from Operation Gratitude as
the list of Veterans keeps on growing. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng said he would like to see
everyone start helping Veterans in order for future generations to take charge.
Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported Arcadia Beautiful Commission Clean-up day took place on
Saturday, November 6, in dedication to Jim Burrows, a longtime resident and volunteer.

It was moved by Commissioner Cao, seconded Chairperson Salter and unanimously carried on
roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung reported
there are many new individuals stopping by the Community Center. Over 1,000 senior lunch
meals were served in October. Monday Dance had a total of 64 individuals excited to come
back to listen to live music and dance. Mahjong is available every Friday and is picking up each
week with a total of 32 individuals during the month of October. ADRCS Cheung reported this
year's Annual Craft Fair was a success! There were many individuals who stopped by to browse
and shop, and all 37 craft booths were sold out. The Senior Boo Bash had close to 70 people in
attendance. Seniors were dressed up in their fun costumes, everyone enjoyed a light lunch,
prizes, games, and best of all the costume contest.
ADRCS Cheung reported there will be a free Flu Vaccine Clinic available at the Community
Center on November 9. ADRCS Cheung reported the Veterans Day Lunch will be held at the
Community Center on November 10, to honor those who served in the military. It will be
different this year with three reservation times. The event includes lunch, a walk down memory
lane, followed by a tour of the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. Veterans will be able to
register their names in the new military kiosk and will receive a lawn sign as a gift from the City
of Arcadia and a gift box donated by Operation Gratitude. ADRCS Cheung reported the yearly
Thanksgiving Feast will be held on November 24 with two seating times. There are still a few
seats available for those who are interested in attending. The event will include a traditional
Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
RCSD Somogyi reported Los Angeles County Public Health Department is providing a mobile
COVID-19 Booster Vaccine Clinic for senior citizens who are homebound and need a booster
vaccine. Contact Bani Antonacci at the Community Center at 626.574.5130 to request the
service. The information will then be forwarded to the appropriate contact at Los Angeles
County. RCSD Somogyi reported the Arcadia City Council asked staff to study five areas
regarding homelessness, which has been commonly referred to as the Five -Point Plan. City
Council will receive the requested information within 90 days to six months.
RCSD Somogyi advised the Senior Citizens Commission effective immediately absences will no
longer be excused unless there is a legitimate reason. After two unexcused absences, City
Council may look into replacing a Commissioners appointment.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salter adjourned the meeting at 4:45pm to December 2, 2021 at 4:OOpm in the
Arcadia Recreation Conference Room located at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
