SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Salter called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Kathrynn Penny,
Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Cao reported there will be a fundraiser for the Arcadia Police Foundation.
Commissioner Cao provided a flyer to everyone. The flyer provided the information such as the
sponsorship opportunities and the cost. The fundraiser will be held at Tong Tak Seafood
Restaurant on May 20, at 11am. Commissioner Cao talked about Carcadia, a group of car
enthusiasts and their cars who enjoy meeting up every month to display their unique classic
cars, drink coffee, and socialize at the Arcadia Hub Shopping Center.
Commissioner Swope thanked Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez for a great Cinco
de Mayo event she attended earlier during that day. Commissioner Swope also thanked RS
Hernandez for the wonderful events of the Luau on April 22, and the Brighter Side Singers
Musical Moments on April 26. Commissioner Swop reported the Friendship Club will have an
Arcadia Police Officer and K-9 presenting at their club on May 18, at 11 am.
Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club held their board meeting on April 21 and
the general meeting on April 22. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported on the following trips: On
May 21, Vice -Chairperson Mazone will be escorting a trip that covers the Broadway Theater
District in Downtown Los Angeles with tour guide, Curt Tucker. On June 7, Travelers will head
to San Diego to enjoy a gondola ride. On June 14, a trip to the flower mart and a visit to Grand
Central Market in Los Angeles will take place. On June 24, Travelers will visit a musical about
the 7,000 airline passengers stranded during the 9/11 attacks. Lastly, Vice -Chairperson Mazone
reported the Arcadia Travelers Club will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary on Friday,
September 23.
Chairperson Salter reported she was happy to attend the Council Meeting on May 3, where
Senior of the Year, Elizabeth Renfrew received her plaque by Mayor Tom Beck.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League is having an open house at the Bargain
Box on May 12, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Commissioner Martinez looks forward to
seeing everyone there. There will be circus themed food, goodies and a tour available.
Commissioner Martinez inquired about staff CPR training. RS Hernandez stated all Arcadia
Recreation and Community Center staff are CPR and First Aid Certified. RS Hernandez also
teaches the CPR training courses and refresher courses.
Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club celebrated Mother's Day on May 5.
Commissioner Salazar is happy to report many of the club members are looking forward to the
senior beach trip on August 19.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Mayor Pro Tern Paul Cheng reported he will be in Sacramento during the week of May 9. Mayor
Pro Tern Cheng reported Coffee with the Police Chief will take place on May 10 at the Metro
Gold Line Station from 7am to 9am. Mayor Pro Tern Cheng reported Public Works will be
providing free mulch on May 21 and June 11, at the Arcadia Public Library parking lot from 7am
to 12pm. Mayor Pro Tern Cheng reiterated how important it is to ask for help when needed.
2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Regular meeting minutes of April 7, 2022
Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved Commissioner Cao, seconded by Commissioner Penny, and unanimously carried
on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
RS Hernandez is happy to report she is seeing many people starting to come back to the
Community Center. RS Hernandez reported the tax season preparation has ended and hopes it
will be back next year. The lunch program is also picking up, as well as Monday Dance,
Wednesday Movie. The billiard room is very popular as well, people are lining up to use the pool
tables. RS Hernandez reported the Spring Fling event had 70 participants in attendance, where
everyone enjoyed dressing up and danced until the end of the event. The Luau event had 77
people in attendance with plenty of food and entertainment. RS Hernandez reported the senor
beach trip is back and registration is now open. Participants will be heading to Bolsa Chica
State Beach on June 24, a closer beach where everyone can enjoy more beach time, and less
time in traffic. Coffee with the Mayor is also returning starting May 17 at 9am. Coffee with the
Mayor will take place every third Tuesday of the month at the Community Center.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung reported
an individual contacted the City in desperate need of financial assistance to pay their rent.
ADRCS Cheung reported the City was able to assist through the San Gabriel Valley Council of
Governments emergency grant funds. The City will always try to assist individuals experiencing
homelessness or about to become homeless.
ADRCS Cheung reported on the upcoming Community Bike Ride will take place on Saturday,
May 7. Participants can enjoy a 7.5-mile recreational ride through the City. Check -in begins at
7am and the ride begins promptly at 8am. ADRCS Cheung reported summer movie and concert
series for 2022 begins Thursday, June 23 at 6:30pm. Concerts and Movies in the Park will take
place every Thursday until August 8, at the City Hall Lawn area.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salter adjourned the meeting at 4:47pm to June 2, 2022, at 4:OOpm at the
Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
