On June 17, Ms. Strople helped Mr. Michael in building and constructing the exhibit panels and labels. Curator Acevedo helped with placement of objects in the exhibit case. Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh has created a monthly door decoration leading to the Museum’s Research Library which has been very engaging to young visitors. During the month of May, it was National Preservation Month and Ms. Alberto-Shaikh had guests visiting the Museum fill out an artifact card with their favorite artifact to put on display. The month of June is National Candy month and visitors are asked what their favorite candy is. Curator Acevedo is working with artist John Martin on his temporary exhibit Recalling the Day: Old School Arcadia at the Museum in September. ADMINISTRATION Director Darlene Bradley and Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia Council PTA's Founder's Day and Honorary Service Awards Luncheon on May 3 at the Arcadia Community Church, where Curator Acevedo was able to promote the Museum’s summer programs, including the photography contest and Summer Enrichment Program. The Museum was awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship grant to fund two paid internships during the summer. The Museum selected Audrey Strople as the Curatorial and Collections Intern and Armando Smith as the Education and Public Engagement Intern. Both interns began working at the Museum on June 14 full time. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their May and June board meetings in the Museum Education Center. Museum Staff discussed current and ongoing projects with Board members, including educational kits offered to the community as well as this year's Summer Enrichment Program. The FAM Board now has three new Board Members, Arlene Okamoto, Annie Bai, and Maria Leiva. Joyce Platt took the Lifetime Membership plaque to add five new members to it. The Friends of the Museum also had a fundraising event on Friday, June 3 at Vons Credit Union where they served lunch to employees there as well as anyone else interested in purchasing a meal. Their next meeting will take place on July 7 in the Museum Education Center. Curator Acevedo continues to work on the City Public Artwork Project, including the inventory of murals, plaques, statues, and memorials around the city. The Museum received the survey back from Silverlake Conservation of all of the City of Arcadia’s Public Art, except Wilderness Park. This will allow Museum Staff to know what the current condition of the artwork is and develop a maintenance plan to budget what items have a higher treatment priority based on the conservation reports. Curator Acevedo and Interns Andersen and Strople will be attending the 2022 California Revealed Workshop at Riverside Public Library on Friday, June 24. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING The Gilb Museum continues to provide free educational kits every other month for the year 2022. From May to June, the Gilb Museum provided the Cookbooks and Kids Kits for members of the community. These kits focused on historical recipes and included a volunteer-submitted recipe. Registration for this kit closed with 256 requests. 4 On May 12, Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto-Shaikh was able to do a series of 5 presentations on the Santa Anita Japanese Assembly Center for Karalee Nakatsuka’s Social Studies classes at First Avenue Middle School. On May 18, Ms. Alberto-Shaikh presented at Camino Grove Community Day, and was able to speak to all the first- grade students about the Museum Education field and the Gilb Museum. On May 20, the Gilb Museum hosted a class of 16 third graders from Barnhart Elementary School. These students were able to get a museum tour, draw a picture of their favorite Museum artifact, and participate in a hands-on petroglyph activity with Ms. Alberto-Shaikh in the Museum Education Center. On May 24, Gilb Museum staff and several interns were able to host all five third grade classes, 115 students, from Holly Avenue Elementary. Each student received a museum tour from Curator Acevedo and complete an in-person petroglyphs activity with Ms. Alberto-Shaikh in the Museum Education Center. On May 14, Ms. Alberto-Shaikh conducted the last Girl Scout program before the summer. She did the My Family Story program with Girl Scout Troop 2881, where Scouts were able to create family trees and interview each other about their family history. Girl Scout Troops do not meet during summer breaks, but there has already been some interest in Girl Scout programming at the Gilb Museum in August. Curator Acevedo attended the Kiwanis Club Annual Book and Bike Safety Fair at Santa Anita Park on June 4. She distributed educational kits to visitors and informed them of the summer programs at the Museum. Ms. Alberto-Shaikh spent time during the months of May and June on the Summer Enrichment Program, which will take place in July. In early June, Museum staff sent out links to register for these free programs through Eventbrite. Links were also made public on the Museum’s website and on social media. Within a few days most of the slots were filled. In anticipation of the sheer magnitude of people interested in these programs and lack of physical space, Museum staff decided that for each program there would be a kit available that could be provided for families who were unable to register for the in-person Summer Enrichment Programs. For each program there will be 100 kits available, with the exception of paleontology week, which will have 150 kits available. Getty Intern Armando Smith has been working closely with Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh. He has also begun work on the Summer Enrichment programs and been assigned to write the lesson plan for the Astronomy program and design the kit for this program. Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh and Getty Intern Smith conducted an educational program on the Tongva Native Americans at the Arcadia Community Center’s Summer Fun N' Play program at Hugo Reid Elementary on June 21. They also conducted the same program on June 23 at the Summer Fun N' Play program at Camino Grove Elementary. Curator Acevedo has been planning for the next installation of the Preservation Workshop Series, which will focus on Photograph Preservation. The program currently has 22 registrants and will take place on Saturday, June 25 in the Museum Education Center. 5 MARKETING Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh continues to grow the Museum’s audience across social media with #WhatIsIt Wednesday, #WhereIsIt Wednesday, and #FeatureFriday posts. She has been actively promoting events such as the Photography Contest, Summer Enrichment Program, and Preservation Workshops. She has been using the #OnThisDay hashtag to celebrate the birthdays of important Arcadia individuals, such as Floretta K. Lauber and Ruth Gilb. On May 21, the Museum made a post for #ArmedForcesDay as part of the Blue Star Museum program. VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS The Gilb Museum currently has 58 volunteers, 43 of which are teens. The Gilb Museum has had so many volunteer applications that it had to again put a halt on accepting any volunteer applications. The Gilb Museum also has six interns for the duration of the summer, including the two Getty Interns. These interns are all working on specific projects, including an inventory, curation and digitization of collections. On Saturday, May 28, Ms. Alberto-Shaikh conducted an in-person Volunteer Orientation for the Museum’s team of teen volunteers. Each volunteer was given a rundown of the summer schedule, the kits schedule, and were given new shirts and drawstring backpacks. The Gilb Museum also began a Teen Volunteer Leader program. Teen Volunteer Leaders will help Museum Staff ensure that projects are completed, and all teen volunteers stay on-task. Several teens applied for the Teen Volunteer Leader positions. Each had to pass a series of tests, give a museum tour, and sit down for a formal interview with Curator Acevedo and Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh. Staff selected eight Teen Volunteer Leads on June 17. For the months of May and June, teen volunteers helped to create educational kits for the 2022 kit series and helped prepare for the Summer Enrichment Program. Many of the teen volunteers have also been trained to scan books and documents, create collection inventories, and conduct front desk work. Volunteer hours: May 1 – June 22: 1,781.85 hours FACILITIES Public Works continues to work on the Carol Libby Courtyard Memorial Garden located outside of the Museum. More boulders have been added to the dry creek beds in two sections of the garden. Public Works also helped move the Arcadia sign located in the Museum’s temporary exhibit space to the permanent exhibit space for visitors to see.
