HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 05/04/2022MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, May 4,2022 CALL TO ORDER — Chair Jeanne Roy called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. in the Museum Education Center. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chair Jeanne Roy ROLL CALL,: Chair Jeanne Roy; Commissioners Dale Carter, Angela Yang, Billie Tone, and Ginny Blitz; Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley; Library Services Manager Pat Smith; Curator Stevy Acevedo; Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto -Shaikh. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS Commissioner Carter made a note that he is turning in his briefcase and binder after ending his time as commissioner. Commissioner Blitz reported that the Friends of the Museum (FAM) is receiving many member renewals, as well as new members. FAM has also received four new life members. Any commission member may reserve a space at the next preservation workshop. Commissioner Blitz also reported that she attended the Beyond the Bake Sale webinar hosted by the Texas Historical Commission, and that it was very informative. Commissioner Tone reported that FAM and the Museum hosted the Coffee Talk featuring Dr. Edward Wong of the Arcadia Chinese Association,. and the event was well attended. REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR Director Bradley thanked the FAM for their participation in the Coffee Talk, which was very well attended, as well as Commissioners Roy, Carter, and Tone for being on the Commission. Director Bradley also reported that she attended the Beyond the Bake Sale, which was informative. She also reported that Library Services Manager Roger Hiles will be retiring June 17. The City has had its first budget study session. REPORT FROM THE CURATOR Curator Acevedo reported that the Museum was awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship grant for two interns. Curator Acevedo participated in the Derby Day 5K and the Museum had a table to help market the Museum, The Coffee Talk with Dr. Edward Wong had 45 attendees. Rebecca Andersen is the Museum intern for the Cataloging California Grant and is currently working on cataloging the Floretta K. Lauber Collection. Intern Patrick Michael is currently working on the 1984 Olympics Collection. Intern Samantha Young finished digitizing the Arcadia High School Band Collection. Tola Livesey, a previous academic intern and current adult volunteer, is working on the digitization and organization of the archive, while adult volunteer Deborah Cordano finished transcribing 192 letters from Robert Beck, who had been stationed at Camp Santa Anita. The Museum has received many donations, including" a COVID-19 journal from a student, many photographs, books from previous Arcadia Mayor Gail Marshall, five boxes of items from the Arcadia Historical Society, and more. Curator Acevedo is still working on the city public artwork project. Museum staff and intern Patrick Michael attended the California Association of Museums Conference in April. REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR Education Coordinator Alberto -Shaikh reported that she continues to distribute educational kits to the community. So far, the Gilb Museum has distributed 259 Backyard Birds kits. Ms. Alberto - Shaikh has also continued to be very active in providing school programs. In March she gave in - person class presentations at Longley Way Elementary, Baldwin Stocker Elementary, and Camino Grove Elementary. Ms. Alberto -Shaikh has also been active in Scout programming, having provided programs to local troops on topics such as Playing the Past, Inside Government, Good Neighbor, My Family Story, Celebrating Community, as well as Collection and Hobbies. The Museum also received two Speakers Bureau requests for the month of March and April. On April 11, Museum staff participated in the social media campaign for #National PetDay. For the months of March and April teen volunteers helped create additional Educational Kits. They have also helped to make kits for the upcoming Kiwanis Club Book and Bicycle Safety Fair, the Downtown Arcadia Patriotic Festival, the Concerts in the Park series, and more. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of March 21 2022 Recommended action: Approve Commission Member Carter moved to approve Consent Calendar Item "a", which was seconded by Commission Member Tone, and carried on a voice vote.
