HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 07/07/22SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES July 7, 2022 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Commissioner Salter called the meeting to order at 4:OOpm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Salazar ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Kathrynn Penny, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope ABSENT: None ELECTION OF OFFICERS Commissioner Salter made a motion to nominate Commissioner Cao as Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Swope. Commissioner Cao accepted the nomination and the motion carried unanimously. Commissioner Penny made a motion to nominate Commissioner Mazone as Vice - Chairperson seconded by Commissioner Salter. Commissioner Mazone accepted the nomination and the motion carried unanimously. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League has a new committee, they are Day of Service and their first meeting will be held on August 7. The first Day of Service meeting will be a mock baby shower where everyone will bring baby items and play baby shower games. During the meeting they will fill backpacks with baby supplies. Commissioner Martinez will announce future meeting dates. Commissioner Salter said she was happy to be Chairperson for the past two years, Commissioner Salter reported the trees on Baldwin Avenue across from the Arboretum need trimming as the public has to walk on the street because they are overgrown. Vice -Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club had over 400 members in 2019. The Club currently has a little over 300 members. Vice -Chairperson reported the Travelers Club will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary on Friday, September 23. Members can bring a guest. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Travel Office during their normal business hours. Commissioner Swope reported the Friendship Club is doing well, everyone enjoyed pizza at their last meeting, and celebrated Father's Day with lunch from Panda Express in June. Commissioner Swope asked if there was assistance for seniors who need help filling out insurance forms. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung responded seniors can meet with a Recreation Coordinator at the Community Center and they can help a senior, however, at this times we can refer seniors to Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez. Commissioner Salazar thanked ADRCS Cheung for providing clarification on the parking ticket his wife received last month. Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club celebrated Fourth of July on July 7. Commissioner Salazar reminded his Club members to register for the Beach Trip on August 19. Commissioner Salazar reported there was an attorney guest speaker at the Club who presented on living trusts, wills, probate, taxes, and more. Chairperson Cao thanked everyone for voting for him as Chairperson. Chairperson Cao was happy to report that effective July 1, 2022, Methodist Hospital has transferred and is officially called USC Arcadia Hospital. Chairperson Cao said it is a very exciting time for everyone because there will be a university level hospital in Arcadia. The hospital will have access to more USC specialists of Keck School of Medicine, additional equipment, USC staff, and much more. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of June 2, 2022 Recommended Action: Approve It was moved Commissioner Martinez, seconded by Commissioner Salazar and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Cao, Martinez, Mazone, Salter, Salazar, and Swope NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: Penny 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor ADRCS Cheung reported on behalf of Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez. During the month of June, the weekly movie attendance was 70. There were two different seminars, on June 16 a representative from Metro presented on Tap Cards, Metro Micro, riding tips, and safety on public transportation. On June 28, a Zoom webinar took place with Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Hindoyan from Methodist Hospital. Bingo was held on June 17, with a light lunch and prizes. The senior beach trip was a fun filled event and participants are excited to go back on August 19 for a second trip. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Sara Somogyi reported there is now an independent non-profit organization called Arcadia Parks Foundation. For information on the foundation, please visit their website at www.arcadiaparks.org. Through their website you can purchase a membership or tickets for their upcoming Parks Gala on September 16. There is also an opportunity to purchase a brick for Newcastle Park. Raymond Cheng is the President, Chery Plotkin, Treasurer, and Alton Wang, Secretary. You can meet them at Concerts in the Park on Thursdays where they have a booth. RCSD Somogyi was happy to report the City of Arcadia received a grant for Land and Water Conservation Funds in the amount of $2.2 million. There were only two cities in Los Angeles County who received grants and the City of Arcadia was one of them. The grant will be for Newcastle Park to construct and renovate the park, including a new playground, pickleball courts, walking path, restrooms, and so much more. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Salter adjourned the meeting at 4:56pm to August 4, 2022, at 4:OOpm at the Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
