HIGHLIGHTS
The Gilb Museum hosted the 4th Annual Summer Enrichment Program
in person during the month of July. Dino Day, in partnership with the Alf
Museum of Paleontology, had 175 people in attendance.
COLLECTIONS
Curator Stevy Acevedo and Intern Rebecca Andersen have submitted the nomination for the
Anthony W. Wilkinson and Floretta K. Lauber collections to the California Revealed digital
repository in August. This will allow for the collections to be digitally shared on the California State
Library website. The staff will know if it has been awarded early in 2023.
Getty Marrow Curatorial and Collections Intern Audrey Strople worked
on the Museum’s Framed Artwork collection. She inventoried, curated,
digitized and cataloged the collection items. She cataloged over 300
items this summer on the Museum's database, CatalogIt. She then
worked on the inventory of the Museum’s map filing cabinet, consisting
of artwork, oversized photographs, and city memorabilia. Ms. Strople’s
last day was on August 20.
The Museum’s Collection and Curation graduate intern, Patrick Michael, worked on the inventory,
curation and digitization of the Golden Age Club Collection recently donated to the Museum. This
collection consists of scrapbooks as well as archival material pertaining to the local club here in
Arcadia since the early 1950’s.
Curatorial and Collections Intern Michelle Lam continues to work on the inventory, curation, and
digitization of the Chamber of Commerce Collection the Museum recently acquired this summer.
The collection includes photographs, flyers, and objects from past events, such as Taste of
Arcadia.
Volunteer Deborah Cordano continues to work on the transcription of the journal which belonged
to Meredith Brucker during her time at M.A.D. High School in the early 1950’s.
2
This summer, Curator Acevedo continued to work with Arcadia High School Student Merjan
Khwajazada in an unpaid internship. Ms. Khwajazada worked on the inventory, digitization, and
curation of the Arcadia High School Band and Music Club collection. There are over 350
photographs in this collection, including vinyl records and scrapbooks.
The Museum has a new adult volunteer, Alick Diaz, who recently graduated from California State
University of Los Angeles. He has worked on the inventory, curation and digitization, and
cataloging of photographs of past City of Arcadia Councilmembers and employees. He is also
being taught by the Curator to use the museum’s database, CatalogIt.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Gene Glasco donated a series of items, including an Arcadia
police officer uniform, City Clerk scrapbook and military medals.
Nilo Salazar donated items belonging to the Golden Age Club,
including ten scrapbooks, two certificates and a plaque.
Pat Smith donated a tote bag from the 1984 Summer Olympics.
The City Manager's Office donated 22 photographs of past City
Council members, mayors, and city employees.
EXHIBITS
The 12th Annual Arcadia Photography Contest and Exhibition was on display through August 6.
The most popular piece chosen by guests as their favorite photograph was “Lechon” submitted
by James Chien. Next year’s photography contest theme is currently being selected by staff.
Curator Acevedo and Interns Andersen and Michael are currently working on the next temporary
exhibit at the Museum, John F. Martin Recalling the Day: Old School Arcadia. The Curator and
Intern Andersen have met with the artist to discuss their exhibit plans and Mr. Martin plans to
bring his artwork on August 26 for staff to install. Mr. Michael is working on the labels and exhibit
cases that will highlight artifacts in the Museum’s collection in connection to Mr. Martin’s artwork
on past and current Arcadia businesses. Ms. Andersen has been working on the vinyl lettering for
the title wall, as well as selecting artifacts to put on display. The exhibit opening will be on
Saturday, September 17 at 1:30 p.m.
ADMINISTRATION
Director Darlene Bradley and Curator Acevedo attended the
Arcadia Chinese Association 2022-2023 Installation Ceremony
of their new board members on Friday, August 5. Teen Intern
Michele Yu also attended the event.
Curator Acevedo posted an unpaid Curatorial and Collections
Internship for the Fall on Handshake. She has conducted interviews with two of the three
candidates so far, interested in hands-on experience in the museum field. Matthew Gomberg is a
recent graduate from the University of California Berkeley. Mayra Aguirre is a current
undergraduate student at the University of La Verne looking for an internship location for college
credit.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their July board meeting in the Museum
Education Center. The Museum Staff discussed current and ongoing projects with the Board
members, including educational kits offered to the community as well as this year's Summer
Enrichment Program. The Friends of the Museum did not have a meeting in August. Their next
meeting will be held on September 1 in the Museum Education Center.

EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Museum Staff participated in this year's Downtown Arcadia Patriotic Festival
on Saturday, July 2. Getty Interns Strople and Smith helped distribute 300
paper lantern kits to the Arcadia community who visited the booth.
The Gilb Museum hosted the 2022 Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) in
the Museum Education Center, making it the first in-person SEP since 2019. Community
members were required to register through Eventbrite. For four weeks in the month of July, the
Museum explored different topics relating to the Museum’s Mission.
July 9 was History and Anthropology-themed, July 16 was Arts and
Artists-themed, July 23 was Paleontology-themed, and July 30 was
Astronomy-themed. For each of these days Museum Education
Coordinator Brittani Alberto-Shaikh taught one session in the
morning, and Getty Intern Armando Smith taught the exact same
program in an afternoon session. In total, over 150 students attended
the Summer Enrichment Programs.
The Gilb Museum put a pause on distributing educational kits in the month of July, in favor of
Summer Enrichment Kits. These kits were specially made to mirror the in-person Summer
Enrichment Program classes, without the guidance of Museum staff; 450 Summer Enrichment
Kits were made and distributed.
The Gilb Museum also distributed kits for the Concert in the Park
series. For each Concert in the Park, the Museum created a kit that
matched the theme of the movie being screened. About 100 kits were
given out at each Concert in the Park, for a total of 700 kits.
In August, the Gilb Museum resumed distributing educational kits with
the Mission: Space Exploration Kit. This kit was thoughtfully crafted and put together by Getty
Intern Armando Smith. As of August 23, 160 kits have been claimed.
In total, over the summer the Gilb Museum, with the help of teen volunteers, put together and
distributed almost 2,000 kits to the Arcadia community.
The Museum had a great turnout for this year's Dino Day on August
20. The Alf Museum of Paleontology participated as well and brought
real fossils from their collections for the public to see. There were
several stations for visitors to go to within the Museum Education
Center and the Museum exhibits. Activities included dinosaur hand
puppets, fossil excavation, fossil painting, and a dinosaur scavenger
hunt. 175 visitors attended the event.
MARKETING
Museum Education Coordinator Alberto-Shaikh continues to grow the Museum’s audience across
social media with #OnThisDay, #WhatIsIt Wednesday, #WhereIsIt Wednesday, and
#FeatureFriday posts. She also promoted events such as the Summer Enrichment Program,
Educational Kits, the Preservation Workshop Series, Dino Day, and tours given by teen
volunteers.
The Museum highlighted its interns for #NationalInternDay on Thursday, July 28. Posts gave an
insight on the interns and the projects they are working on at the Museum during the summer.
4
VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS
The Gilb Museum currently has 65 volunteers, 45 of which are teens. The
Gilb Museum has not taken new adult or teen volunteer applicants for the
duration of the summer, since the Museum already is at capacity with
volunteers. In July, the Gilb Museum reached a milestone by surpassing
3,000 cumulative volunteer service hours.
The Gilb Museum also has six interns during the summer, including two Getty Interns. Education
and Public Engagement Getty Intern Armando Smith has been able to learn about the field of
Museum Education by teaching sessions at the Summer Enrichment Program. He has also
assisted the Museum Education Coordinator in the creation of kits that can be used in the coming
months, until January 2023.
Academic Intern Mariana Brana from the University of La Verne has
completed the Spanish translation of all exhibit panels within the Gilb
Museum, as well as several informational pages from the Museum’s
website. Museum staff will use these translations and create QR codes to
allow Spanish-speaking visitors to be able to read the informational text on
the walls in Spanish. Teen Intern Michele Yu has been working to complete
a Mandarin translation of the panels in the Museum. She is currently still
working on this project.
Volunteer hours:
July 1 – August 13: 1,563.79 hours
FACILITIES
As part of one of the Museum’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), the staff ordered new shelves
for the Museum Education Center’s closet that stores supplies used by the Museum Education
Coordinator for programs and events. Public Works helped build and install the shelves.
Public Works continues to work on the Carol Libby Garden located outside of the Museum. Plants
have now been added to the garden, as well as an irrigation system to water the plants. The
dedication ceremony is set to take place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 17.

the VONS Credit Union in El Monte. Commissioner Blitz also attended the Photography
Preservation Workshop. Councilmember Verlato reported there was no City Council Meeting on
July 5. There is an 8-story, 319-unit complex proposed to be built in Downtown Arcadia on the old
Bank of America property. The decision on whether this property will be built will be made at the
July 19 council meeting; also on July 19, the proposed charter amendments will be finalized,
which will be reflected in the November election. One change will be the language reflecting the
change from at-large elections to district elections. There will also be elections in districts 2, 3,
and 5. Councilmember Verlato also commented on two lawsuits against the city. The first is for
Sho Tay’s term limits. The city filed their opposition yesterday, and a hearing will be held on
Wednesday July 13, a decision will be made by July 18. The second lawsuit was filed with the
Attorney General but has not moved forward yet. This lawsuit seeks to remove Councilmember
Danielson and to remove the amended redistricting map. The Attorney General will decide if this
lawsuit will move forward.
REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR
Director Bradley welcomed the new commissioners. The City budget was passed and the
Museum Education Coordinator position hours were increased from 30 hours to 40 hours per
week. The Carol Libby Courtyard is still under construction. The Friends of the Arcadia Historical

Alberto-Shaikh was heavily involved with educational programming at the local elementary and
middle school schools. On May 12, she attended all five of Karalee Nakatsuka’s social studies

Mr. Smith assisted Ms. Alberto-Shaikh with programming in conjunction with joint programming
with the Arcadia Community Center. Both taught on the topic of Tongva Native Americans at the
