PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Billie Tone ROLL CALL: Chairperson Billie Tone, Commissioners Ginny Blitz, Marilyn Daleo, Angela Yang- Ayala, Library Services Manager Pat Smith, Museum Curator Stevy Acevedo, Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto-Shaikh. ABSENT: Commissioner Janalee Shimmin PUBLIC COMMENTS: None REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS: Marilyn Daleo reported the Arcadia Women’s Clubhouse is being designated an Arcadia historic landmark. A dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 5 at 10:00 am. April Verlato reported on the September 6 City Council Meeting. The City is allocating $750,000 to small business grants. Individual small businesses will be able to apply for $10,000 maximum. The City will also be allocating $250 for permit fee grants. There is a proposed improvement project for Baldwin Avenue between Huntington Drive and Naomi Avenue. The sidewalks will be improved, trees will be removed, and infrastructure for lighting will be installed, as well as benches and trash cans. Money will come from Measures R and M, which are allocated at the County level. Ms. Verlato also updated the Commission on the status of the two lawsuits that were brought against the City of Arcadia. For the suit in which Diana Chang sued the City to allow Sho Tay to be on November’s ballot, the court deemed that term limits do apply, and struck down the lawsuit. No appeal has been filed. In the second suit, the City was sued to remove Michael Danielson from City Council and choose a new district map, the court deemed that it is too late to change the City Maps. By September 12 the plaintiff must file a motion to remove Councilmember Danielson. The Court scheduled a hearing for October 4. City Council elections will take place on November 8 for Districts 2, 3, and 5. The Arcadia Chinese Association will be hosting candidate forums at the Community Center: for District 5 on September 25 from 2:30 – 4:30 pm; for Districts 2 and 3 on September 30 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. Tonight (September 7) there will be a Classical Kaleidoscope Concert at the Arcadia Public Library, which will include two musicians from the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This will be a free event, sponsored by the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library. The Summer Reading Program saw approximately 1,100 sign-ups this year. The Arcadia Public Library was able to hire two entry-level librarians, Claudia Arroyo and Melissa Maldonado. The Library also opened up recruitment for a Library Services Manager to take Roger Hiles’ position, since he retired, but the recruitment has proved difficult as other cities in the surrounding area are hiring for similar positions, and Glendora is offering a $12,000 sign-on bonus. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. In October the Library will be hosting Arcadia Eats and will have a presentation by John F. Martin, who will also have an exhibit at the Gilb Museum. On September 6, Human Resources closed the recruitment for the substitute Museum Education Coordinator Position.
