Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES November 3, 2022 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Cao called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Cao ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Nilo Salazar, and Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope ABSENT: Kathrynn Penny SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club held their board meeting on October 20 and general meeting on October 28 with guest speaker Fire Chief Barry Spriggs from the Arcadia Fire Department. Vice-Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming trips: December 3, Holiday Christmas sing a-long at Disney Concert Hall followed by a special tour over the 6th street bridge in Downtown Los Angeles. December 9, Beyond King Tut Exhibition. December 17, Surf, Sand and Santa. January 13, Paramount Studios tour and lunch at & HMS Bounty. January 18, The American West where participants will have lunch followed by a trip to the Gene Autry Museum. January 23, Pretty Woman at the Grand in Long Beach to hear music of Roy Orbison. Vice-Chairperson Mazone was happy to report Chris Ohrmund from the Travelers Club was chosen from all the Lions Clubs in California to ride on the Lions Club float in the Rose Parade 2023. Chris Ohrmund has worked with the City of Glendora and City of Montebello Lions Club for many years. She has also been president of the Lions Club four times, served as District 4- L2 District Governor, currently serving as Cabinet Secretary and is President of Student Speakers Foundation. Chris has been a staple to the Lions Club for many years. Commissioner Salter reported she attended the Mayor’s Community Breakfast on October 28 at Santa Anita Park. She really enjoyed special guest speaker Candace Parker. Commissioner Salter said she will talk to Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung at a later date about advertising for the Assistance League in the Connection Newsletter. Commissioner Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club had a fun time celebrating Halloween with food and a costume contest. Everyone is looking forward to their Thanksgiving lunch in November catered by Chef’s Restaurant. Commissioner Salazar reported Deputy Fire Chief Suen stopped by the Golden Senior Club to talk to members about safety protocols at home. Club members were also encouraged to enroll in Community Connect, a free, secure, and easy way to provide critical information about your household to first responders. Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club has new members and many fun things they do every Thursday, such as bingo and karaoke. Chairperson Cao reported on a couple of events coming up. The 33rd Annual Crystal Ball will be held at the Pasadena Convention Center on November 5. The celebration will honor Paul Rusnak for his charitable support in healthcare. The annual fundraiser includes dinner, a silent auction, entertainment, and more. The next event is the Arcadia Police Foundation Gala on November 5, at Le Meridien Hotel in Arcadia. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League is having their second day of service on December 3, from 9am to 12pm at Foothill Unity Center in Monrovia. Volunteers will be sorting and wrapping holiday donations. The donation will be given to those in need throughout San Gabriel Valley. The holiday boutique will open on November 9 – 12, from 10am -1pm. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Pro Tem Paul Cheng reported the Mayor’s Community Breakfast and State of the City Address was held on October 28 at Santa Anita Park. Mayor Pro Tem reported the 2022 Community Cleanup day will be held on November 5. The event will be dedicated to Mary Hansen who was an active volunteer for many years. Mayor Pro Tem Cheng reported the Arcadia Library currently has early voting from 10am to 7pm, and not to forget to vote on Tuesday, November 8. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of October 6, 2022 Recommended Action: Approve It was moved Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Penny and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Cao, Martinez, Mazone, Salter, and Salazar NOES: None ABSENT: Penny ABSTAIN: Swope 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez (RS) reported on the following programs and events. Notary Marilyn Merlo’s last day will be November 8. Marilyn has volunteered over 30 years. A new Notary volunteer, Joanne Cervantes will begin December 9. Joanne will be available the second and fourth Thursday of the month. Bingo in October had 87 people in attendance. The event keeps getting better. On Thursday, October 13, 36 seniors took a trip to Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles. This year participants explored Mexico. Everyone had a chance to shop, have lunch, and enjoy a museum tour. On Monday, October 31, 65 seniors attended the annual Boo Bash. Everyone had a fun costume. Everyone enjoyed games, prizes, and there was also a costume contest. RS Hernandez reminded everyone the Veterans Lunch will be held at the Community Center on Thursday, November 10. The yearly Thanksgiving feast will be held on November 23 at 11:30am. The last event for the year is Candy Cane Bunco on December 9. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Cheung reported Arcadia Fire Deputy Chief, Chen Suen will be promoted to Fire Chief. If you see him, please congratulate him. ADRCS Cheung reported the first Stakeholders meeting was held on Wednesday, October 27. Homeless Stakeholders consists of 28 individuals, including representatives from LACADA, Arcadia Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Arcadia Improvement Association, Creative Housing Options in Arcadia, Arcadia Unified School District, Recreation & Community Services Department, Arcadia Police Department, and residents. The goal of Homeless Stakeholders is to have open, constructive dialog concerning homelessness, discuss programs and solutions that can be implemented in Arcadia. In the first meeting, individuals introduced themselves and the group was educated on Arcadia’s previous and current efforts to address the homeless crisis. The next Homeless Stakeholders’ meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Gift Shop The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their creations and allows the community to purchase one-of-a-kind items at a great price. 198 Visitors Monthly Revenue $757 Information & Referral Intakes This program assists seniors and their families with issues that affect their quality of life by providing information and referral that address their daily living concerns. 7 Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. 485 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure check is available for our senior patrons every month on Tuesdays, from 10-11am in the Community Center Billiard Room. 10 Senior Nutrition Program A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday for senior citizens. For many seniors, this is the only hot meal they have daily. 1,296 Average/Day 76 Classes Exercise plays a vital role in health and wellness. Classes include line dance, cardio plus, and Zumba. These courses contribute to bone density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, the reduction of stress, and improved cardio. 1,780 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8:30am-3:30pm. Seniors could drop in and play to gain exercise and socialization. 75 Lions Sight The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors with free vision care. Prospective clients are screened by senior services staff that make the necessary arrangements for the service. 2 Mahjong Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets every Friday at 1pm. 54 Monday Dance Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of every month. This program provides a good element for senior participants and has a good ratio of male and female dancers. 153 Dial A Ride Monthly Bus Pass Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 22 Legal Assistance The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization is available once a month at the Community Center to provide seniors with legal insight. 4 Notary Services Notary services are limited to three signatures or thirty minutes per appointment every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. 3 Coffee with the Mayor On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 36 Weekly Movie New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater size screen every Wednesday for free. 61 Arcadia Veterans Day Luncheon On Thursday, November 10, 168 seniors came to the Community Center to honor those who served in the military. Arcadia Veterans received a lawn sign provided by the City and a gift box provided by Operation Gratitude. Several local VFW/American Legion representatives were in attendance. 168 Veterans Day Lawn Sign Yard signs were delivered the first week in November and picked up by senior veterans along with a gift box donated from Operation Gratitude. 42 Thanksgiving Luncheon On November 23, 136 seniors attended the Thanksgiving Feast. The event included a hot, traditional Thanksgiving meal and raffle prizes. Every year, meals are served by the Arcadia Fire Department. 136 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and handling the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss future trips and provide a social gathering.
