She is reviewing all letters previously transcribed by the community, to complete the project the Museum has worked on since 2020. This collection was recently highlighted in the California Revealed quarterly newsletter for the work done on it with the Cataloging California Grant awarded to the Gilb Museum in 2021. Curatorial and Collections Fall intern, Matthew Gomberg continues to inventory, curate, and digitize the items located in the Museum’s oversized map cabinet. Intern Gomberg has cataloged over 175 items from the Museum’s collection. He also continues to learn more skills in curation, including creating custom archival sleeves and boxes for items in the collection. An inventory of all items donated during this time period:  David Wilson, a previous Arcadia Firefighter, donated a photograph of the Arcadia Police Department (c. 1920), an Anoakia School brochure, Arcadia City Statistics brochure from 1957-1960, and a 1957 map of Arcadia with handwritten notes about water main lines around the City. EXHIBITS Curator Stevy Acevedo, staff member Rebecca Andersen, and Collections & Curation Intern Patrick Michael have been working on the installation of new temporary exhibits at the Museum, as well as around Arcadia. The Museum lobby exhibit case was updated to showcase the Arcadia Mounted Police history scrapbook. 2 Staff updated the exhibit in upper City Hall near the Cashier’s Office, showcasing the History of Chickens in Arcadia, as well as the Council Chambers exhibit to showcase the Arcadia Fire and Police Departments as community heroes. The last day for John F. Martin’s Recalling the Day: Old School Arcadia exhibit will be Saturday, January 7, 2023. Staff is currently preparing for the next temporary exhibit, Red Envelopes which has been designed by community members. The exhibit opening will be on Saturday, January 21, 2023. ADMINISTRATION Curator Acevedo submitted the application in November for the 2023 Getty Grant for two paid internships: Curatorial and Exhibitions internship and Education and Public Engagement internship. She will be notified if the Museum has been awarded the grant in early 2023. Curator Acevedo also submitted the application for the 2023 California Revealed Cataloging California grant to have the Ruth and Charles Gilb collection inventoried, curated, and digitized. Once the collection has been processed, it is the Curator’s goal to have this collection nominated for the California Revealed / California State Library online repository. On November 1, Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia PTA meeting. At the meeting, she shared what current events and programs are available to the Arcadia community at the Museum. She has also been working with the Santa Anita Park Director of Community Service and Special Projects Pete Siberell, in providing resources on the Santa Anita Japanese Assembly Center. She conducted tours on October 27 and November 21 to university professors, as well as members of the Japanese American Citizen League and the Japanese American National Museum. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their November and December board meetings in the Museum Education Center. Museum Staff discussed current and ongoing projects with the Board members, including the Make Your Own Snow Globe event. FAM board members helped decorate the Museum and MEC front desk, as well as help set up for the Make Your Own Snow Globe event. Museum staff, with the help of the Teen Volunteers, also helped FAM in creating 300 giveaway items for Snow Day. Their next meeting will take place on January 5 in the Museum Education Center. Topics will include the first program of the year, a History Talk on January 7th: Arcadia’s Participation in the Rose Parade. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING The Gilb Museum finished distributing the Fall into Autumn kit, which ended with 228 requests, and began to distribute the Terrific Trees kit, which has had 94 requests to date. During Snow Fest, staff passed out 200 Terrific Trees kits to visitors. In 2022, the Gilb Museum distributed over 5,000 kits to the Arcadia community. The Museum plans to continue the educational kits program since its popularity with the community has been growing. Curator Acevedo conducted the last Preservation Workshop for this year. The Paper Preservation Workshop had 14 participants. In total, there were 52 participants in this year's series of classes. The Museum plans to conduct this program once again in 2023 in addition to two new workshops on art and digitization. Curator Acevedo did a presentation at the Community Center’s Veteran’s Day Luncheon. She spoke about the exhibits at the Museum highlighting military history in Arcadia and encouraged Veterans to submit their stories to be included in the Museum’s Arcadia Local Veteran’s kiosk. 3 Curator Acevedo attended the Mary Hansen Memorial Garden dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony hosted by the City Manager’s Office on November 15 at the Arcadia Public Library. This year’s Make Your Own Snow Globe event on December 3 was very popular with the community. The Museum gave out 310 snow globes, with the help of Teen Volunteers and the Friends of the Museum Board Members: Joyce Platt, Don Fandry, Maria Leiva, and Joanna Liang. The Friends of the Museum had a booth at the Snow Fest event in the Community Center parking lot, which helped promote the Museum’s event at the Museum Education Center. Other than the main snow globe event, staff also had the Decorate a Red Envelope project outside of the Museum Education Center, Santa’s Beard activity in the Museum Kid’s Corner, and a scavenger hunt throughout the exhibits. There were many new families visiting the Museum for the first time. The Museum participated in this year's Downtown Arcadia Holiday Fair event on December 10. With the help of Library staff, they passed out 300 gingerbread candy canes to the community, created by the Museum’s teen volunteers. MARKETING Museum staff continue to promote the Museum’s collection as well as events on its social media platforms. The Museum’s monthly newsletter through MailChimp has also been very popular with over 800 subscribers. The Museum plans to send an end of the year newsletter, highlighting all programs and events in 2022. VOLUNTEERS and INTERNS In December, the Gilb Museum reached a milestone by surpassing 5,100 cumulative volunteer and intern service hours for the year. The Museum has had 92 adult and teen volunteers, as well as interns, since January 2022. Since the Museum has a small staff, the support of volunteers is critical to the development of educational programs and kits for the Arcadia community. The Museum will resume accepting volunteer applications in January 2023.
