and Parks Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted
agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be
placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Cheung called the meeting to order at 6:01 pm.

ABSENT: Swinney
A motion was made by Commissioner Vanni, seconded by Commissioner Chu, and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to excuse Commissioner Yu.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Chairperson Cheung reported she is looking forward to Breakfast with Santa and the Snow
Festival on December 3, 2022.
Commissioner Vanni reported Mayor Tom Beck's last City Council meeting will be on December
6, 2022. Commissioner Vanni reported the City Council will have a goodbye celebration and honor
Mayor Beck for his years of service. Commissioner Vanni reported the Foothill Unity Center will
also be present to thank Mayor Beck for his continuous support and present him with a certificate
of appreciation. Commissioner Vanni reported there has been another water main break in the
Highland Oaks area during the recent rains. Commissioner Vanni inquired about pickleball in
Arcadia. DRCS Somogyi informed the Commission, pickleball open play is offered Tuesdays and
Fridays at the Camino Grove tennis courts.
Commissioner Chu reported he is enjoying watching the community participate in holiday
festivities.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR

It was moved by Commissioner Vanni, seconded by Chairperson Cheung, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a.

Wilderness Park
DRCS Somogyi reported the City is currently working with the Office of Emergency Services
(OES) and the City's insurance to assess damages and repairs to Wilderness Park from the
rainstorms and mudslides in 2021. DRCS Somogyi reported it is still unsafe for the
Commissioners to visit the park at this time.
II. Monthly Reports
DRCS Somogyi reported on the October senior programs and activities. DRCS Somogyi reported
USC Arcadia Hospital continues to provide free blood pressure checks on the second Tuesday
of the month with 15 seniors participating. DRCS Somogyi reported the senior nutrition program
is increasing in attendance with an average of 75 participants per day. DRCS Somogyi reported
class participation is strong with 1,812 seniors taking classes. DRCS Somogyi reported the
Monday Dance and Friday Mahjong are still popular favorites with strong participation in each.
DRCS Somogyi reported Coffee with the Mayor had 39 attendees where participants come to
chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. DRCS Somogyi reported
the Senior Cultural Day Camp took place on October 13. "Mexico" was the themed event with 36
seniors taking a field trip to Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. The seniors had an authentic
Mexican meal, guided tour, participated in a craft, and had time to shop. DRCS Somogyi reported
on October 31, 65 seniors attended the Annual Boo Bash event. This Halloween themed luncheon
included food, games, and a costume contest.
DCRS Somogyi reported on several recreational programs beginning with the after school
program with 3,300 children attending the six school sites during the month of October. DRCS
Somogyi reported the Department partnered with the Arcadia Downtown Improvement
Association for the Halloween Haunting event held in downtown Arcadia. This family event had
approximately 6,000 people come out and enjoy trick or treating, shopping, and socializing. DRCS
Somogyi reported merit badge classes are still being offered virtually with 49 participants. Youth
and adult classes had over 3,000 participants for the month. Classes take place at the Community
Center, Museum Education Center and various fields and facilities throughout the City. DRCS
Somogyi reported Community Center rentals for non-profit organizations are increasing with 10
rentals taking place in October with 1,430 participants.
III. Financial Statements
DRCS Somogyi reported the financials are right where they should be at approximately 25% in
expenditures and 33% in revenues for the fiscal year. DRCS Somogyi reported the Park and
Recreation Facilities Fund has little change but will begin to show movement when the Newcastle
Park project begins in the next year.

SENIOR SERVICES DIVISION
Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of
programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four

Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of every

Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and

The Recreation Services Division is responsible for providing programs and activities which meet the
recreational needs of the community. A diverse selection of programs is offered for youth, adults, and
families to provide the opportunity for positive recreation experiences and to promote health and
wellness. A brief description and attendance totals for the programs and services are listed below.
