HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 12/01/22SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES December 1, 2022 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Cao called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chairperson Cao ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Michael Cao, Charlene Martinez, Kathrynn Penny, Nilo Salazar, and Donna Salter, and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: Marilyn Mazone A motion was made by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Penny and unanimously carried to excuse Vice -Chairperson Mazone. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members celebrated Thanksgiving with food from Chefs Restaurant. On December 15, the club will celebrate Christmas with a gift exchange and lunch from Panda Express. Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members look forward to karaoke every Thursday. Chairperson Cao reported December 1 will be his last meeting as he will be joining the Arcadia City Council starting December 6. Chairperson Cao thanked everyone for being a wonderful commission. A new Chairperson will be selected at the next meeting to replace. Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box had a successful sale in November. She also reported the Assistance League is having their second day of service on December 3, from 9am to 12pm at Foothill Unity Center in Monrovia. Everyone will sort and wrap donations and food for those in need throughout San Gabriel Valley. The Assistance League staff will have their holiday party on December 13, at the Altadena Country Club. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League will be closed from December 17, 2022 through January 9, 2023. Commissioner Salter reported she attended the Veterans Lunch last month and enjoyed it very much. Commissioner Salter said Las Salas volunteers will host their holiday party on December 14, with dinner at Villa Catrina's in Arcadia. Everyone will bring an unwrapped new gift to be donated to Foothill Unity. Commissioner Salter reported the signal light at the corner of Baldwin and Huntington should allow for more time to make the turn during peak hours. Commissioner Penny reported the signal to turn left going southbound on Baldwin closest to the Fire Department takes a very long time to change and the signal light on the corner of Baldwin should allow for more time for left turns during peak hours. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung said she will contact City Engineer to have it looked at. Commissioner Penny said the Arboretum's Lightscape looks beautiful, and she can't wait to attend. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Pro Tern Paul Cheng reported on the following events: There will be a tree lighting ceremony at Transit Plaza on December 1 at 6pm; On Sunday, December 4, Judy Chu, Congresswoman will be at the Elks Lodge from 1 - 4pm for the annual Holiday Party & Toy Drive; On Tuesday, December 6, the oath of office for newly elected members of the City Council will be held; On Saturday, December 10, the Downtown Arcadia Improvement Association will be hosting their annual holiday fair from 1 lam to 4pm. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meetinq minutes of November 3, 2022 Recommended Action: Approve It was moved Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Penny and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Cao, Martinez, Salter, Salazar, and Swope NOES: None ABSENT: Mazone ABSTAIN: Penny 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez (RS) reported on the following programs and events. There are many new items in the Gift Shop at the Community Center and sales are going well each month. RS Hernandez encouraged to stop by to browse or shop. RS Hernandez reported there will now be a dietitian available to answer questions starting January 10, during the blood pressure check program. RS Hernandez reported there were 168 people in attendance at the Veterans Day Lunch on November 10. It was an eventful afternoon with the Arcadia High School Band playing music as individuals arrived. Veterans received a gift box and a lawn sign. RS Hernandez reported on the following upcoming events: On Tuesday December 6, the Department will host a breakfast for all Community Center Volunteers at 9am; Martin King Jr Day celebration will be held on Friday, January 13; Chinese New Year Celebration will take place on Friday, February 3; Sweetheart Bunco will be held on Friday, February 10; RS Hernandez also mentioned seniors can call for their tax preparation appointments starting January 6, 2023. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Cheung congratulated Paul Cheng and Michael Cao for being on City Council. ADRCS informed everyone the City's winter Buzz Brochure is now available online. Residents will receive a postcard with the QR code to the City's online registration portal. ADRCS Cheung reported the annual Snow Fest and Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday, December 3. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Cao adjourned the meeting at 4:30pm to January 5, 2023, at 4:OOpm at the Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
