SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Mazone called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Steve Sherman stopped by, introduced himself and reported he was interested in becoming a
Senior Citizen Commissioner to represent the Men's Club. Assistant Director of Recreation and
Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung responded by informing Mr. Sherman he will
have to fill out a Resume, and a letter from the Men's Club President will have to be turned in to
the City Clerk's office to be considered for the appointment.
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice -Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members are happy to be able to
return to the Assistance League, and the liability insurance for the use of their building has been
resolved. Vice -Chairperson Salazar was sad to report that one of the longest members, and
former Treasurer of over 30 years from the Golden Senior Club, Toni Armenio passed away in
January 2023. Toni lived to be 101 years of age. A memorial service for Toni will be held in
February. Vice -Chairperson Salazar asked if there is a program or assistance to help senior
citizens with rent before they experience being evicted or becoming homeless.
Commissioner Salter reported she spoke to Diane Lucas, President of the Assistance League of
Arcadia and was informed all senior clubs have new agreements and each member of each
club will have to sign a waiver. Every club is happy to return to the Assistance League.
Commissioner Penny reported her place of work, with the City of Los Angeles Recreation
Department has lifted all Covid-19 restrictions including mandatory vaccination which will no
longer be required to enter the building. Commissioner Penny is happy to see everything getting
back to normal.
Commissioner Bolster introduced himself, he was appointed Commissioner at Large and happy
to be part of this Commission. Commissioner Bolster has lived in Arcadia 42 years.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box is having a book drive for students in grades
1-12. During the month of February, the Bargain Box will be accepting book donations which will
be given to those students in need. Students will receive a backpack with books, school
supplies, clothes, shoes, and a few more items. The book drive will help those in need and can
be dropped off at the Bargain Box on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1 pm and they
also accept checks.
Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club held their board meeting on January 19 and
their general meeting on January 27 with Mayor Pro Tem, April Verlato as their special guest
speaker. Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming March trips. On March 1, Travelers will
visit Palm Springs for the day to enjoy a musical tribute to the singers of the 1960s. On March
17, there will be a day trip to Alhambra to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. On March 23, there is a
trip scheduled to visit the Sand Diego Safari Park. Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming
April trips. On April 23, Travelers will visit Fallbrook for the Avocado Festival. On April 29,
Travelers will be able to enjoy a three-hour cruise through the Channel Islands National Marine
Sanctuary in Ventura. The next board meeting will be held on February 17 and the general
meeting on February 24 with a guest speaker from Premiere Tours.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Sharon Kwan introduced herself as the new Liaison for the Senior Citizens
Commission. Council Member Kwan is happy to learn all about senior services and to show her
support. Council Member Kwan reported she attended the grand opening of Trinity Hills Estate
on Wednesday, February 1. The new facility is located at 617 Walnut Avenue, which is the
fourth property to open in Arcadia. Trinity Hills Estates is an all-inclusive community that offers
personalized care for loved ones.

Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Martinez and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported on the following events and programs for
senior services. Dial -A -Ride has been receiving many new applications at the Community
Center. During the month of January, 51 bus passes were sold. Bingo was popular in January
with 86 registered participants. The theme was Groovy Bingo and included festive decorations
and lunch. During the month of January, a total of 102 people attended free seminars held at
the Community Center. The telephone reassurance program is back, it is now called You've got
a Friend. We are looking for volunteers to make phone calls. Bridge is also back twice per week
and meets at the Museum Education Center on Wednesdays and Fridays.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
ADRCS Cheung invited Commissioners to the Chinese New Year celebration on February 3.
ADRCS reminded everyone the nomination forms for Senior of the Year must be turned in by
Friday, March 17. ADRCS Cheung asked everyone to please announce it at their senior clubs.
Each year the City of Arcadia recognizes an individual who has contributed to better the Arcadia
Community, who currently resides in Arcadia, and is 55 years of age or older. Applications are
available online, at City Hall, online, and at the Community Center.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Mazone adjourned the meeting at 5:OOpm to March 2, 2023, at 4:OOpm in the
Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
