The Gilb Museum has received 38 School Program requests for the rest of the school year.
COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS

Collection, which consists of over 700 items. He is creating a detailed
inventory, and will also digitize, curate and catalog the collection.
Intern Mr. Patrick Michael has completed the inventory, curation, digitization,
and cataloging of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Santa Anita
Chapter Collection. He is now helping Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo with
upcoming exhibit projects.
Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano continues to work on the Anthony W.
Wilkinson Collection transcription on FromThePage.com. She is also working with Curator
Acevedo in reviewing grants the museum can apply to in the future, since she has experience
with grants and fundraising.
Intern Ms. Maria Barrios continues to work on the inventory, curation and digitization of the Santa
Anita Athletic Club Collection. Intern Mr. Zackary Ostrowski is now working on collections and is
doing an inventory, curation and digitization of the Sandy Silverstein Collection.
Intern Ms. Lauren Bailey is currently conducting an inventory, curation, and cataloging of the Dr.
Dennis Lojeski Collection. Dr. Lojeski was a past Council Member for the City of Arcadia.
Volunteer Mr. Alick Diaz has been assisting Ms. Bailey by digitizing the artifacts in this collection
and uploading them to the Museum’s database, CatalogIt.
EXHIBITS
This year's Red Envelope Exhibit was very popular at the Museum with community members.
The last day of the exhibit was April 15. The Museum plans to have this exhibit once again in
February 2024, when we celebrate the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dragon.
The Museum staff is currently working on the curation and installation of the 13th Annual Arcadia
Juried Photography Contest and Exhibition. This year’s theme is nature. The Museum received
17 submissions of framed photographs by members of the community. The Museum will provide
a prize of REI gift cards to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention winners. The prizes have
2
been graciously sponsored by the Hakka Foundation. The exhibit opening is scheduled for
Saturday, April 29.
ADMINISTRATION
Substitute Museum Education Coordinators Mr. Daniel Estrada
and Mr. Sam Kho began working at the Gilb Museum on March
1. They were trained in the opening and closing procedures at
the Museum. They also began training for school programs.
They have both been very supportive at the Museum with
staffing and programs. They have also been working with the
Museum’s teen volunteers.
Museum Education Coordinator Ms. Brittani Alberto-Shaikh gave her notice and her last day at
the Museum was on March 4. The Museum is currently interviewing for a permanent Museum
Education Coordinator.
On March 7, Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia PTA Luncheon meeting. At the meeting, she
shared what current events and programs are available to the Arcadia community. She plans to
attend the May 2 meeting as well.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their March and April board meetings in
the Museum Education Center. Museum staff discussed current and ongoing projects with the
Board members and have asked them to volunteer at some of these events. The board also
discussed future fundraising ideas. Their next meeting will take place on May 4 in the Museum
Education Center.
The Gilb Museum was awarded once again the California Revealed / Cataloging California grant,
to work on the Ruth and Charles Gilb Collection. The funds from this grant help provide a paid
internship at the Museum. Once the collection items have been processed, it is the Curator’s goal
to have this collection also nominated for the California Revealed / California State Library online
repository in 2024.
The Museum has been awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship grant to fund two
paid internships: Curatorial & Exhibitions along with Education & Public Engagement. Interns will
work 40 hours a week for 10 consecutive weeks. Staff was accepting applications until April 15
and is currently interviewing potential candidates for the positions. Curator Acevedo and
Substitute Museum Coordinator Ms. Rebecca Andersen have been attending Getty Supervisor
workshops.
Curator Acevedo is working on the City of Arcadia Capital Improvement Project for the restoration
of the Peacock Fountain located at Los Angeles County Park on the corner of Huntington Drive
and Santa Anita Ave. The Gilb Museum has chosen to work with Silverlake Conservation based
on the bids given.
Curator Acevedo is working with Girl Scout Ms. Sohana Sahni on a Girl Scout Gold Award. Ms.
Sahni will be collecting oral histories from Arcadia community members of all ages, to see the
impact of social media on their lives. The goal is then to create a temporary exhibit for the
community to see at the Museum. Curator Acevedo has written a letter of support and is waiting
to hear back to see if the project has been approved by the proposal committee.
3
Curator Acevedo attended the California Association of
Museums Conference in Oakland, California from March 8 to
11. Stevy and Brittani presented “Strategies for Utilizing Teen
Volunteers in Small Museums” which had 75 attendees. While
at the conference, Curator Acevedo was also able to network
with other museums in the state. Curator Acevedo has
submitted “Strategies for Utilizing Teen Volunteers in Small
Museums” proposal to the Western Museum Association
Conference which will be taking place in October 2023 in
Pasadena.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
The Gilb Museum participated in this year's Hugo Reid Elementary Trade and Talent Day on
March 2. At the event, Museum Education Coordinator Brittani Alberto-Shaikh shared with the
students what it is like to work at the Gilb Museum. She also shared some artifacts with the
students of items in the Gilb Museum collections.
The Museum conducted the second History Talk program of the year on March 4 on Lucky
Baldwin. The staff has decided to reschedule the following talk on Clara Baldwin-Stocker from
May 6 to June 10, because of other larger events going on around Arcadia that weekend.
The Museum’s documentary screening of To Climb a Gold Mountain on Saturday, March 18 was
very popular with the community. The first showing included a Q&A with co-Director Dr. Alex Azmi
after the film. The Museum hopes to continue providing free documentary screenings to the
community.
Curator Acevedo conducted the second Preservation
Workshop for this year on April 1. The Digitization
Preservation Workshop had 12 participants. Many were
happy to learn techniques used in museums, that they too
can use to preserve personal and family memorabilia.
Participants also appreciated the Preservation Kits, which
were generously funded by the Friends of the Arcadia
Museum. Curator Acevedo also promoted the use of the
Memory Lab at the Arcadia Public Library, where
community members can digitize their items for free. The next preservation workshop will be for
textiles on June 3.
The Gilb Museum partnered with California Revealed to offer a workshop on April 14 to local
organizations throughout Southern California called “Demystifying Digitization: An Introduction to
California Revealed”. Curator Acevedo and Staffmember Andersen presented and shared their
experiences with California Revealed. The staff then offered a behind-the-scenes and exhibit tour
to the participants at the workshop of the Museum.
The Gilb Museum has received more requests for school programs, including from Hugo Reid
Elementary, Baldwin Stocker Elementary, Highland Oaks Elementary, and Camino Grove
Elementary for programs Tongva Time and Then vs. Now. In total, the Gilb Museum currently has
38 school programs scheduled until June. So far, staff has completed 17 of the programs off site.
On June 1, Holly Avenue will be bringing all four 3rd grade classes, for a total of 104 students.
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum will be volunteering that day to help with the large number of
students at the museum.
4
The Gilb Museum conducted a Girl Scout Celebrating Community
program on March 25 to 13 Girl Scout Brownies. Two other Girl
Scout programs have been scheduled for April 22 and May 13.
Curator Acevedo will be attending the STEAM Night event at
Highland Oaks Elementary on April 27. Staff has created
educational kits to pass out at the event.
The Museum also plans to participate in this year's Arcadia
Firefighters Pancake Breakfast on May 6. Staff has created 300 kits to give away at the event
with the help of the Museum’s Teen Volunteers. The Museum has also been invited to participate
at El Rancho Days at the Los Angeles County Arboretum on May 5.
MARKETING
Museum staff continue to promote the Museum’s
collection as well as events on its social media
platforms. The Museum’s monthly newsletter via
MailChimp has also been very popular with almost
1,000 subscribers.
The Gilb Museum has several scheduled social media
posts to help the public become aware of its upcoming
exhibits and programs. The Museum also promoted
volunteers during National Volunteer Week from April
18 to the 23.
VOLUNTEERS
The Museum has been very fortunate to have a lot of great and dedicated volunteers. The teen
volunteers have constructed the Museum’s Educational Kits and outreach program kits. They will
continue to help with the construction of more educational kits including the 4th of July kits for the
Downtown Arcadia Patriotic Festival (300), STEAM Night (150), Pancake Breakfast (300), El
Rancho Days (200), and Concerts at the Park series (450). That is a total of 1,420 kits on top of
the already 800 kits completed.
For those volunteers who completed over 100 hours in 2022, they have been invited to the Silver
Circle event hosted by the City of Arcadia on May 11. The Museum had 18 volunteers that went
above and beyond in volunteering and have been invited to attend.

REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS: Commissioner Yang-
Ayala reported that her employer, MOCA, just hired one of the Gilb Museum’s former interns for
a full-time position. The former intern said that Curator Acevedo’s mentorship gave her the
courage to apply for the position. Councilmember Verlato reported on the most recent City Council
meeting.
REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR: Director Bradley informed the Commission that Shelly Polifka,
the Office Coordinator for the Library and Museum, is retiring at the end of the week after 23
years. She reviewed the wide variety of tasks she was responsible for and said the recruitment
for the position has opened. She also reported that the Library is still recruiting a Circulation
Supervisor. The Librarian position in Cataloging and Acquisitions has been filled. The Museum
Education Coordinator gave her notice; her last day is this Saturday. Two new substitutes have
been hired at the Museum.
REPORT FROM THE CURATOR: The Curator reported that January and February were busy,
and included a History Talk on Arcadia’s participation in the Rose Parade, with the participation
of Commissioner Daleo, as well as the successful Red Envelope exhibition and the Preservation
Workshop. The Museum was awarded a California Revealed Grant: Jonathan Ornelas will work
on the Ruth and Charles Gibson collection. Curator Acevedo reviewed the other projects that
Museum interns are currently working on. Recent donations—including items from Bob’s Big Boy,
the Rose Parade, the Woman’s Club, as well as an “Apache” watch and a wine cup from the
Santa Anita Racetrack were discussed. The Curator has gathered quotes for the Peacock
Fountain restoration project. The former Museum Education Coordinator will continue as a
substitute following her resignation. The Museum continues to get requests from schools for
programs: the new substitutes will be taking those on. Curator Acevedo also discussed the
upcoming film program, “To Climb a Gold Mountain.” Marketing is going well: there are currently
1,000 subscribers to the monthly newsletter via MailChimp. The volunteers have completed 800
educational kits and are almost done through September. In January and February, they
completed 392 hours. Flyers for “To Climb a Gold Mountain,” the Annual Juried Photography

Educational Kits were reviewed.
