PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chairperson Mazone ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Charlene Martinez, Marilyn Mazone, Kathrynn Penny, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: None ABSENT: None SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Salter reported she attended the City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 2, for the Senior of the Year recognition of Marilyn Daleo. The Day of Service for the Assistance League will take place on Sunday, May 7, for anyone who would like to volunteer. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League has a Links to Learning program to promote schools, literacy, and learning. This year, every second -grade student in the City of Monrovia received a book. There are five elementary schools in Monrovia. The book is called Dragon Gets By, by Dav Pilkey. Commissioner Martinez said kids wrote thank you notes to the Assistance League and sent photos holding their books. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League Bargain Box donated $1,000 dollars to nine school libraries in the City of Monrovia. Commissioner Martinez was happy to report a very nice thank you letter from the principal of Monroe Elementary School was received. The letter indicates Monroe Elementary will be using the donation to purchase Spanish books for their library. Commissioner Swope reported the Friendship Club is doing well and hoping to get their members interested in coming to the lunch program at the Community Center and to meet for one of the special events. Commissioner Swope requested the birthday names mentioned from the Friendship Club and the Golden Senior Club be separated in the Connection Newsletter as some members do not attend both clubs. Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club held their board meeting on April 20 and their general meeting on April 28 with guest speaker Mayor Paul Cheng. Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming trips. On August 6, Travelers will take a day trip to Marina Del Rey and enjoy a cruise aboard the Hornblower Cruise Ship. On August 16, a trip to San Diego for an amazing and authentic Luau. This is a popular trip requested by those who attended last year. Chairperson Mazone reported on the following extended trips. On May 21 through June 3, Travelers will be visiting Japan. On September 24 through October 1, there will be a trip to New England and on November 8 through November 14 a trip to Savanna and Charleston is open for registration. The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, May 18. Mayor Pro Tem Verlato will be the guest speaker at the next Travelers meeting on May 26 and will talk about wills and living trusts. Lastly, Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Club is looking for new qualified volunteers to work in the office and escort trips. Applications will be available soon for anyone who is interested. Commissioner Bolster asked about the status of Wilderness Park and when will the City plans to open the park again. Commissioner Bolster said the park is a beautiful and should not remain closed for too long. Assistant Director of Recreation and Community Services (ADRCS) Candice Cheung informed everyone the office building and park were covered by mudslides from heavy rains and will likely take a long time for the park to reopen. Vice -Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club will be celebrating Mother's Day on May 11 with a catered lunch. Vice -Chairperson said the Club currently has 30 members and they are looking forward to more people joining. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of April 6, 2023. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Salter seconded by Vice -Chairperson Salazar and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Martinez, Mazone, Salter, Salazar, and Swope NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: Bolster, Penny 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported Senior Services has an Information and Referral Program (I&R) to assist seniors with filling out forms, notary services, referral assistance, legal assistance, and more. RS Hernandez reported on Tuesday, May 2, the Arcadia City Council honored the 2022 Senior of the Year, Marilyn Daleo. Marilyn was presented with a City Tile and many gifts and flowers from her peers, family and fellow volunteers. RS Hernandez along with Senior Commission Chairperson Marilyn Mazorre, Joyce Platt, and Jan Shimmin honored Marilyn with a special lunch at The Derby Restaurant. Marilyn Daleo was grateful for the honor she received and happy to be part of a beautiful community. RS Hernandez reported the Cinco de Mayo celebration lunch will be held on Friday, May 5 with entertainment, lunch, raffles, and dancing. On Saturday, May 6, the annual Community Bike Ride will begin promptly at 8am from the Community Center heading to a seven -mile ride around the community. There will be vendors checking and tuning bikes, participants will have an opportunity to win raffles prizes. After the bike ride, participants can head over to Fire Department 106 for a pancake breakfast. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director ADRCS Cheung reported she participated in the first Community Campout held on April 29-30. The event was provided by the Arcadia Parks Foundation who made it a wonderful experience for over 200 individuals camping out on City Hall lawn. Everyone enjoyed crafts, lawn games, dinner, and a movie. The Arcadia Police Department were there to patrol and to make sure everyone was safe. Mayor Paul Cheng, City Manager Dominic Lazaretto, and Director of Recreation and Community Services Sara Somogyi were there to show their support to the Arcadia Parks Foundation.
