Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSIONERS REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON 2. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. There will be no separate discussion of these items unless members of the Commission, staff, or the public request that a specific item be removed from the Consent Calendar for separate discussion and action. a. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES June 1, 2023 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER – Vice-Chairperson Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:02pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Vice-Chairperson Salazar ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Charlene Martinez, Kathrynn Penny, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: Robert Bolster and Marilyn Mazone ABSENT: None A motion was made by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Swope and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Bolster and Chairperson Mazone. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice-Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club will celebrate Father’s Day on June 15 with food and dessert. Vice-Chairperson Salazar was happy to see the new Connection Newsletter with the changes requested in the last meeting. Vice-Chairperson Salazar said he tries to have all members look through the Connection Newsletter each month to see all the programs and events the City has to offer. Vice-Chairperson Salazar reported the Club members enjoy their 15-minutes of weekly exercise and bingo. Commissioner Penny reported there have been suspicious people walking around her neighborhood. Commissioner Penny said one person was trespassing and looking around the property. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez said she will pass the message along to the Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung. Commissioner Martinez provided the Recreation and Community Services Department certificates for individuals experiencing homelessness. The certificate entitles an individual to two shirts, two pairs of pants, shorts, or skirts, and one sweater or jacket from the Bargain Box on Live Oak Avenue. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League had their Day of Service on May 7 and filled 135 backpacks for children who graduated out of the foster care system. The backpacks contained many supplies for each person. Las Alas provided and distributed the backpacks to the Sycamores and Trinity Youth Centers. Commissioner Martinez asked if there was any way we could have the City Council Member Liaison attend meetings. Commissioner Swope said it was mentioned at the Travelers Meeting on April 28 that there was no longer a Friendship Club. DDRCS Cheung said if that is the case, she will ask staff to announce the correct information at the next Travelers meeting. Commissioner Swope asked if copies of their Club’s flyer could be printed. DDRCS Cheung said it would not be a problem if it is to promote their club. Commissioner Swope mentioned the free Wednesday Movie Program at the Community Center interferes with the Friendship Club’s bingo time. DDRCS Cheung said the movie day of the week has been the same for many years and cannot be changed due to scheduling conflicts. Commissioner Salter said she was happy to attend the volunteer dinner held last month and had a lovely time at this nice event. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of May 4, 2023. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Penny and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Martinez, Penny, Salter, Salazar, and Swope NOES: None ABSENT: Bolster, Mazone ABSTAIN: None 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez read a thank you letter from Chairperson Mazone who was not able to attend this meeting. RS Hernandez reported on past and upcoming programs and events in May and June. On Friday, May 5, there was a Cinco de Mayo lunch with 109 people in attendance and included a trio mariachi band. On May 17, 30 people attended the Taste the Town event at the Outback Steakhouse. Each month participants can register and meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia to have lunch, socialize and meet new people. On May 19, 91 participants attended and played bingo which included a light lunch and many prizes. A tropical themed Bunco event will be held on June 2, and includes lunch and prizes as well. Lastly, RS Hernandez reported the Walk and Talk program time will be moving to 9am during the summer due to the weather. Later in June, participants will be walking to Fire Station 105 with a Recreation Coordinator for a tour. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director DDRCS Cheung reminded everyone the Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park begins Thursday, June 22. DDRCS Cheung said she hopes to see everyone there enjoying the live bands and specifically the celebration of Arcadia’s 120th birthday on August 3. There will be cupcakes, balloons, giveaways, t-shirts, and more. DDRCS Cheung gave an update on the traffic lights on the corner of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive. After speaking with the City Engineer, DDRCS Cheung was informed the traffic lights are programmed correctly and working how they are supposed to. _________________________ By: _________________________ Chairperson Secretary Gina Hernandez DATE: July 6, 2023 TO: Honorable Chairperson and Members of the Senior Citizen Commission FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services Submitted by Gina Hernandez, Recreation Supervisor SUBJECT: Senior Services, Programs and Activities for June 2023 Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. 611 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure check is available for our senior patrons every month on Tuesdays, from 10-11am in the Community Center Billiard Room. 16 Classes Exercise plays a vital role in health and wellness. Some of the classes offered are line dance, cardio plus, Zumba and more. These courses contribute to bone density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, the reduction of stress, and improved cardio. 1,377 Coffee with the Mayor On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 32 Gift Shop The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their creations and allows the community to purchase one-of-a-kind items at a great price. 119 Visitors Monthly Revenue $459 Information & Referral Intakes This program assists seniors and their families with issues that affect their quality of life by providing information and referral that address their daily living concerns. 19 Lions Sight The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors with free vision care. Prospective clients are screened by senior services staff that make the necessary arrangements for the service. 2 Legal Assistance The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization is available once a month at the Community Center to provide seniors with legal insight. 4 Mahjong Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets every Friday at 1pm. 70 Monday Dance Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of every month. This program provides a good element for senior participants and has a good ratio of male and female dancers. 181 Monthly Bus Pass Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 21 Senior Meals Program A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday. For many seniors, this is the only hot meal they have daily. 1,679 Average/Day 73 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8am-4pm. Seniors could drop in and play to exercise and socialize. 211 Tech Talk Tech Talk is a program provided for seniors who need assistance with their electronic devices. Volunteens are available the first and third Friday of the month from 4-5pm. 8 Walk & Talk Every Thursday at 10am, seniors join a staff member for a short, leisurely walk around the Community Center and surrounding areas. 32 Weekly Movie New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater size screen every Wednesday for free. 93 Singalong with James Iranfar Every Wednesday from 1-3pm James plays his guitar and sings with a group of seniors. Everyone has the words to each song and enjoy singing as it makes them happy. 80 Free Senior Seminars Free seminars on various topics are available each month. In June the following topics were presented: Seniors Helping Seniors, Head & Neck Disorders, and Aging in Arcadia. Seminars take place at the Community Center. 80 Tropical Bunco Bunco was held on Friday, June 2 with a tropical theme. Bunco includes eight games, raffles, lunch, and refreshments. One lucky winner took home a gift card. There were 29 registered participants. 29 Senior Luau On Friday, June 9, Seniors Services hosted the sold-out Summer Luau event with 136 registered participants. The event was held at the Community Center where participants enjoyed lunch, and Polynesian dance performers who had participants up and dancing on stage. Everyone was excited to fill their bags with a variety of sweets at the candy bar. 136 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and handling the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss future trips and provide a social gathering.
