the 1984 Summer Olympics exhibit at the Cashiers Office at
City Hall in July. Getty Interns Woo and Ms. Angel Ge worked
on the creation of a smaller City of Arcadia 120th Anniversary

brickyard, and centennial memorabilia.
Staff completed the installation of the City of Arcadia’s 120th anniversary exhibit at the Museum.
Interns Woo, Ornelas, and staff member Ms. Rebecca Andersen helped with the creation and
installation of the exhibit. The exhibit portrays panels created by Getty Intern Woo that highlight
certain time periods in Arcadia’s history and also a section highlighting what does the future hold
for the City of Arcadia.
ADMINISTRATION
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) did not have a meeting in July but did conduct their
August meeting in the Museum Education Center. Museum staff discussed current and ongoing
projects and events with the Board members that occurred in the summer. The Museum staff was
able to share their experience with this year's Summer Enrichment Program and upcoming
exhibits. Their next meeting will take place on September 7 in the Museum Education Center.
Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia Chinese Association 2023-2024 Officers and Directors
Installation Invitation on August 18. She attended with Library Manager Ms. Samantha Alba and
was able to talk to attendees and build connections for future collaborations.
The Museum was awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship grant to fund two paid
internships: Curatorial & Exhibitions along with Education & Public Engagement. Interns worked
40 hours a week for 10 consecutive weeks. Curator Acevedo and Museum Education Coordinator
Estrada worked with both interns with their projects, including the construction of the 120th
Anniversary exhibit and Summer Enrichment Program. Their last day at the Museum was on
August 22.
Curator Acevedo continues to work with Girl Scout Ms. Sohana Sahni on her Girl Scout Gold
Award. Ms. Sahni has begun collecting oral histories from Arcadia community members of all
3
ages, to see the impact of social media on their lives. Once she is ready, she will be creating a
temporary exhibit for the community to see at the Museum.
Curator Acevedo is also working with Girl Scout Ms. Kailani Yamashiro on her Gold Award. She
will be creating a photo journal of significant monuments in Arcadia for the Gilb Museum. Mayor
Pro Tem Ms. April Verlato and Curator Acevedo came up with a list of ten monuments that Ms.
Yamashiro can focus on her project around the city, including the Lucky Baldwin Statue, Anita
Baldwin Statue, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Monument.
Curator Acevedo was asked to participate in the Lunch and Learn webinar series with the
California Association of Museums (CAM) on August 17. Ms. Acevedo and Mr. Estrada presented
“Strategies for Utilizing Teen Volunteers in Small Museums”. This webinar is available on the
CAM YouTube channel as a resource for other museum professionals.

Power of Adults with Special Needs as Volunteer Champions” to the California Association of
Museums Conference in 2024 and it has been accepted.
Curator Acevedo has received a request from Mr. Pete Siberell, the Director of Community
Service and Special Projects, once again with a future project at Santa Anita Park. Curator
Acevedo will be providing a tour to Mr. Siberell and his colleagues on August 30.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Curator Acevedo and Getty Interns Woo and Ge
participated in this years Downtown Arcadia Patriotic
Festival on July 1. The Museum’s booth was once
again located next to the Arcadia Public Library
booth. Staff passed out promotional material with the
Museums logo as well as educational kits for kids to
make firework wands.
Museum Education Coordinator Estrada and
Getty Intern Ge completed the Summer
Enrichment Program with a total of 132 attendees
across all four programs. Fifteen of those
students received a special certificate and gift
bag for participating in all four programs. The
Summer Enrichment Program had four separate
presentations with two sessions each week,
which were conducted by both Mr. Estrada and
Ms. Ge. The programs offered included Curator
of Art, Curator of Plants, Curator of Fossils, and Curator of History. Attendees learned what it
takes to work in a museum and the multiple career fields to choose from. Feedback was
consistently positive from parents and guardians.
For individuals that could not attend the Summer Enrichment Program, Mr. Estrada and Ms. Ge
turned the lessons and activities into a kit that families could take home. Fifty kits were created
as take-home kits. A total of 481 Summer Enrichment kits have been given out.

The Native Trees of Arcadia Educational Kit is now available for the community to reserve and
pick-up. Insects of Arcadia will be available beginning on October 3.
Curator Acevedo conducted the fourth Preservation
Workshop for this year on August 12. The Paper
Preservation Workshop had eight participants. Two of
those who were unable to attend still received the
presentation and materials given out during the
program. Many were happy to learn new techniques
used in museums, that they too can use to preserve
personal memorabilia. Participants also appreciated
the Preservation Kits, which were generously funded
by the Friends of the Arcadia Museum. The next
Preservation Workshop will be on art, taking place on October 7.
Museum staff held its annual Dino Day event
and saw over 120 visitors in the Museum and
Museum Education Center. The event was
organized into five numerical stations.
Activities included excavating fossils, making
a trace fossil imprint, crafting a velociraptor
eye magnet, and making a hatching dinosaur
puppet. The Alf Museum of Paleontology
continued the tradition of collaboration. Alf
Museum staff manned an excavation booth
with real fossil specimens to educate the
community. Volunteers assisted with
assembling activity supplies and decorating
for Dino Day. A total of 13 volunteers helped with the event.
The Preschool Program will be returning on September 1 and will continue every Friday until
November. Each week will be a different theme inspired by the history of Arcadia and nature

and develop their creative expression. There are currently seven preschool students registered,
all around 2 years old.
School Program requests for the 2023-2024 is open for all educators. A total of 15 programs have
been requested by teachers in Arcadia Unified School District. On Thursday, September 21, 16

Teen Volunteer, Ms. Chloe Htut, created a design commemorating Arcadia’s 120th Anniversary.
The image is full of references to the rich history of Arcadian businesses, events, locations, and
public buildings. The design was printed on tote bags, which are intended to be incentives to have
community members visit and engage with the 120th Anniversary exhibit.
