RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Cheung called the meeting to order at 6:02pm.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Chu
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Cheung, Chu, Mediana, and Vanni
EXCUSED: Swinney
A motion was made by Vice -Chairperson Vanni, seconded by Chairperson Cheung, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Commissioner Swinney.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Mediana — No Report
Chairperson Cheung congratulated the Recreation and Community Services Department on a
successful season of Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park. Chairperson Cheung reported
she attended many of the concerts including the last concert on August 3, National Night Out and
the 1201h Birthday Celebration of the City of Arcadia. The celebration was festive and fun with free
t-shirts and cupcakes for those attending the event.
Vice -Chairperson Vanni reported he is looking forward to when the Recreation and Parks
Commissioners can join the City Council on a tour of Wilderness Park. Vice -Chairperson Vanni
reported bear sightings on his walks in the Highland Oaks residential community.
Commissioner Chu reported he attended the swearing -in ceremony for the incoming
Commissioners representing various departments and commissions throughout the City.
Commissioner Chu reported the support for the Recreation and Parks Commission's new
commissioner Sonny Mediana was met with much support and enthusiasm.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Mayor Pro Tern Verlato reported Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park had a successful
season. Mayor Pro -Tern Verlato reported she attended the concerts including the last one on
August 3, celebrating National Night Out and the City's 120th Birthday. Mayor Pro-Tem Verlato
reported the Council is working to get the Wilderness Park tour on the calendar.
2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of July 12, 2023.
It was moved by Vice -Chairperson Vanni, seconded by Commissioner Chu, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a.
3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
Project Updates
Deputy Director of Public Works Services (DDPWS) Carmen Masud reported advertisement for
the Newcastle Park Design Build went out July 31 through August 7. DDPWS Masud reported all
proposals for the Newcastle Park Renovation Project are due by August 17,
b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department
Monthly Reports
Director Recreation and Community Services Department (DRCS) Sara Somogyi reported the
necessary paperwork has been filed with the County Recorder's Office in compliance with
required items needed for the Grant the City was awarded for the Newcastle Park project.
DRCS Somogyi reported on July senior programs and activities. DRCS Somogyi reported the
billiard room had over 600 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported a senior chess club has started
with 12 participants in July. DRCS Somogyi reported Coffee with the Mayor had 37 seniors
present. DRCS Somogyi reported the Information and referral service helps connect seniors with
different services in the community, 23 seniors were assisted. DRCS Somogyi reported Mahjong
continues to be popular with 92 seniors participating. DRCS Somogyi reported an average of 77
seniors per day came to the lunch program. DRCS Somogyi reported Walk & Talk ventured out
to the Fire Department and Mall with 22 participating. DRCS Somogyi reported senior services
provides a, You've Got a Friend program where seniors call home bound seniors to check in on
them and offer emotional support, six people were contacted through the month. DRCS Somogyi
reported the Patriotic Picnic was held on July 3 with 65 seniors attending. They enjoyed festive
activities, entertainment, and a delicious lunch.
DRCS Somogyi reported on several recreation programs beginning with the Summer Concert
and Movies in the Park final concert on August 3. National Night Out and the City's 1201h Birthday
were celebrated with numerous vendors; birthday cupcakes and free commemorative t-shirts
were handed out while supplies lasted. DRCS Somogyi reported the Summer Fun 'N Play
program and Sports Camps conclude this week with more than 3,500 children participating.
DRCS Somogyi reported 48 Volunteens donated over 725 hours. DRCS Somogyi reported
recreation classes remain popular with more than 4,400 participants at the various facilities
throughout the City. DRCS Somogyi reported the City will be hosting the Moon Festival on
September 30.
Financial Statements
DRCS Somogyi reported the financials are 100% in for the fiscal year of 2022/23 with revenue
under at 96.4% and expenditures under at 95% for the fiscal year. DRCS Somogyi explained
budgets are set on how the previous year performed. Most of the affected revenue was due to
facility unavailability and lack of interest in virtual classes.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Cheung adjourned the meeting at 6:36pm to September 13, 2023, at 6:OOpm in the
Recreation and Community Services Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
