REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Mediana reported the Public Works Services Department did a quick and thorough
job cleaning up the debris at Tierra Verde Park and other areas of the City after the rain and wind
tropical storm Hilary brought. Commissioner Mediana complimented the Public Works Services
Department on the efficiency and care taken for the safety of the residents.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of August 9, 2023.
It was moved by Vice -Chairperson Vanni, seconded by Commissioner Chu, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a.
3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
Project Updates
Deputy Director of Public Works (DDPWS) Carmen Masud reported the Newcastle Park Design
Build Project will be on the October 3, 2023, City Council Agenda to award the contract for the
project. DDPWS Masud reported a shuttle will be available to take Commissioners into
Wilderness Park for the tour on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 8:OOam.
b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department
Monthly Reports
Director Recreation and Community Services Department (DRCS) Sara Somogyi reported the
Moon Festival will be held on Saturday, September 30. DRCS Somogyi reported the Arcadia
Parks Foundation will be holding a fall fundraiser, ARTcadia, on Saturday, October 7.
DRCS Somogyi reported on August senior programs and activities. DRCS Somogyi reported
Coffee with the Mayor had 25 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported Mahjong had 92 participants.
DRCS Somogyi reported 66 seniors attended the free seminars in August: Keys to Happiness,
Care Placement, and LA Metro's, "On the Move Riders Program". DRCS Somogyi reported
Summer Bunco was held on August 4 with 26 seniors attending. Seniors enjoyed beach themed
activities and lunch. Winners took home gift cards. DRCS Somogyi reported 107 seniors enjoyed
the yearly Beach Trip to Doheny State Beach on August 17. Participants enjoyed the beautiful
weather, a BBQ lunch, games, s'mores, and walks along the water.
DRCS Somogyi reported on several recreation programs beginning with the Adult Basketball
Program with 513 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported Concerts and Movies in the Park
concluded on August 3. National Night Out and the City's 120th Birthday were celebrated with
numerous vendors, birthday cupcakes, and free commemorative t-shirts. Attendance was high
with 1,376 participants at the concert and 479 participants for the movie. DRCS Somogyi reported
the final two weeks of summer Fun N' Play and Sports Camp had 727 and 1,007 participants,
respectively. DRCS Somogyi reported the Aftershool program started on August 21, 2023, and
will continue through May 32, 2024. The Afterschool Program is held at the six elementary school
sites where children are supervised by staff and participate in organized games and activities
from school dismissal time until 4:30pm. There were 2,476 children participating in August. DRCS
Somogyi reported 38 Volunteens donated 1,563 hours in August. DRCS Somogyi reported
recreation classes remain popular with more than 2,801 participants at the various facilities
throughout the City. DRCS Somogyi reported Community Center rentals are picking up with 1,100
attending various organization rentals in August.
Financial Statements
DRCS Somogyi reported the Fiscal Year 2023/24 July percentage for expenditures and revenue
is 8.33%. DRCS Somogyi reported expenditures are above at 9.84% due to the extensive summer
programming, the revenue is considerably above at 18.04% for the same reasons. DRCS
Somogyi reported the Parks and Facility Fund will begin showing movement as Newcastle Park
project goes under construction. DRCS Somogyi reported the original budgeted cost has
increased due to inflation and is being presented to City Council for approval along with the
contractor bid Public Works is presenting for the project.

SENIOR SERVICES DIVISION
Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of
programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four

On September 2, seniors enjoyed the Senior Health and

On September 8, 87 participants attended the Ice Cream themed

bingo. Players had the opportunity to win fun prizes, and a grand

prize of a $50 gift card. The event included eight rounds of bingo,

prizes, lunch, refreshments, and ice cream for dessert.
Western
On Friday, September 15, 153 seniors enjoyed a western style

lunch with all the fixings, socializing, and the highlight of the

event, line dancing with Pam Wagoner.
On September 21, seniors explored the Greek culture. They
were escorted to the Getty Villa Museum where they had a tour

of the museum. After the museum, lunch was enjoyed at Papa
Camp
Cristos restaurant. Next, participants headed to Saint Sophia

Greek Orthodox Cathedral for a tour of the Cathedral. Each year
the Cultural Day Camp highlights a different country and culture
to explore.
On Friday, September 22, the first senior Moon Festival
luncheon was held at the Community Center to celebrate the

mid -autumn moon festival and ate moon cakes for dessert.

RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION
The Recreation Services Division is responsible for providing programs and activities which meet the
recreational needs of the community. A diverse selection of programs is offered for youth, adults, and
families to provide the opportunity for positive recreation experiences and to promote health and
wellness. A brief description and attendance totals for the programs and services is listed below.

Kids' Night Out took place on Friday, September 8, at the Arcadia
Community Center. Participants took part in an "Ahoy Matey!"

had dinner, made a pirate craft, played games, and watched a
movie.
On Saturday, September 30, the City of Arcadia held the Moon
Festival event in collaboration with the Arcadia Chinese
Moon Festival
Association and the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce. Over 3,000

people celebrated the gathering of family and friends, enjoyed
entertainment from dancing to singing to storytelling, raffle prizes,
and mooncakes.
On Saturday, September 9, seven participants joined staff for a 2.8-
mile hike on the Old San Gabriel Road. Hikers experience the

enjoyed by the river before returning. Transportation was also
provided.
