Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes
per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior
Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the
posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or
action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Martinez reported that on October 8, there will be a silent auction and art sale from
local artists at the Chapter House from 4-7pm. Commissioner Martinez reported there will be a
holiday sale at the Bargain Box on October 7, with great deals on books for children and adults.
There will be plenty of books available from cooking, kids, language, mystery and more.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box is not accepting donations at this time until after
the holidays.
Commissioner Salter reported she attended the Moon Festival on Saturday, September 30, at
City Hall Lawn and said she enjoyed the entertainment. Commissioner Salter suggested if the
event is held next year, the food trucks should be closer to the event for the public to see.
Vice-Chairperson Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club is doing well. The Senior Friendship
Club meets on Thursdays at 11am at the Assistance League. Club members are excited for the
upcoming holiday festivities. Every week there are fun activities such as karaoke, birthday
celebrations, bingo, and more.
Commissioner Platt reported the guest speaker for the Travelers general meeting October 27, will
be Ed Andersen from the Arcadia Historical Society. Commissioner Platt reported on the
upcoming trips. On October 11, participants will travel to the city of Julian for a lovely four course
tea, served in a home that is said to be 100 years old and everything is tea themed. After tea,
everyone will have a chance to visit the famous Dudley’s Bakery. Saturday, October 28, Travelers
will head to Claremont Arts and Craft Fair to shop for the holidays where there are over 300
crafters selling holiday items and more. After everyone is done shopping, they will have a chance
to grab lunch at a local restaurant or any of the food trucks at the fair. Commissioner Platt reported
the 2024 Travelers memberships are on sale now.
Commissioner Bolster reported he attended the Mayor’s Breakfast last month. Commissioner
Bolster reported he continues to take an interest in Wilderness Park and will continue to press the
issue as he feels the park should open soon.
Commissioner Sherman reported members from the Men’s Club play cards at the Arcadia
Community Center on Mondays followed by lunch. Commissioner Sherman said he had a nice
time at the Senior Cultural Day Camp on September 21.
Chairperson Salazar reported that the Golden Senior Club members are doing well and enjoying
their weekly meetings, activities, and exercises. Chairperson Salazar reported there will be a
guest speaker from the Arcadia Police Department on October 12 to speak on safety. Chairperson
Salazar reported there is a paramedic membership program available for Arcadia residents. The
application is available online or at the Community Center. Applications will also be available at
the next meeting.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez
Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reported on
behalf of Supervisor Gina Hernandez. DDRCS Cheung reported the Taste the Town is becoming
a popular program where participants go to a new restaurant in Arcadia each month, meet new
friends, and socialize. A shuttle is now available for those who would like to be picked up and
dropped off at the Community Center. DDRCS Cheung reported the Boo Bash event is being held
on Tuesday, October 31. The event includes lunch, prizes, and a costume contest. Seniors look
forward to dressing up in their costumes.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
DDRCS Cheung reported on behalf of Recreation and Community Services Director, Sara
Somogyi. DDRCS Cheung reported the Moon Festival turned out to be a great event and would
like to hear feedback from everyone to make it even better for 2024. DDRCS Cheung invited all
Commissioners to the Veteran’s Day lunch on November 9. The event begins at 11:30am, with a
free meal to all Veterans who show proof of service. DDRCS Cheung reported the first Coffee
with Mayor April Verlato will be held on Tuesday, October 17 at 9am. DDRCS Cheung reported
each year the City partners with Downtown Arcadia for the Halloween Haunting event. This year
it will be held on Friday, October 27, from 4 to 6pm, on First Avenue and Huntington Drive. There
will be plenty of activities for families to enjoy.

SUBJECT: Senior Services, Programs and Activities for October 2023
Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude
of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE
Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from
7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. 432
Blood Pressure
Check
Free blood pressure check is available every month on
Tuesdays, from 10-11am in the Community Center. 10
Bridge
Bridge is available every Wednesdays from 10am-1pm. Card
games can help improve memory and cognition, it also enhances
motor skills and promotes socialization.

Chess Club
Chess is available every Thursday from 9:30 to11:30am. The
game of chess can help increase creativity and problem-solving
skills and improve concentration and reading skills.

Classes
Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone
density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and
can also reduce stress. Some of the classes offered are line
dance, cardio plus, and Zumba.

On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors listen and chat with
the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 46

The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their
creations and allows the community to purchase one-of-a-kind

Lions
Sight
The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the
Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free
vision care. Prospective clients are screened to make the
necessary arrangements for their free service.

Legal
Assistance
The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization
is available once a month at the Community Center to provide
seniors with legal insight.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four
people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player
secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets every Friday at 1pm.

Monday
Dance
Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each
month. This program provides a good element for participants
and has a good ratio of male and female dancers.

Bus Pass
Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and
can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 16

Program
A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday. For many seniors,
this is the only hot meal they have daily.

Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8am-4pm.

Taste the Town
Taste the Town is a monthly program where each month
participants meet up at different restaurants, have lunch, and
socialize. The October Taste the Town visited Chang’s Garden
on October 19.

Tech Talk
Tech Talk is provided for seniors who need assistance with their
electronic devices. Volunteens are available every month from
4-5pm to assist with their questions and devices.

Movie
New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater
size screen every Wednesday for free. 88
Sing Along with
James Iranfar
Sing along meets every Wednesday from 1-3pm. James plays his
guitar and sings with a group of seniors for fun and socialization. 101

Seminars
Free seminars on various topics are available each month. The
following topics were presented in October: Smart Driver Tek
Workshop, New Medicare Benefits, Balance Scale Demo,
Holiday Cooking Demo, Mental Health & Free Estate Planning,
and Probate Clinic.

“You’ve Got
a Friend”
This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who
live alone, feel lonely, or need someone to check in on them.
New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed.

Spooky Bunco
Bunco was held on Friday, October 13, with 29 registered
participants who enjoyed the spooky theme, raffle prizes, lunch,
and treats.

Fall ’n for Bingo
On Friday, October 20, 86 participants were in attendance
for Fall ‘n for Bingo. Bingo includes eight rounds of bingo,
lunch, refreshments, fun prizes, and dessert.

On Saturday, October 21, the Annual Community Craft Fair was
held with 46 booths. There were many seasonal items, craft
demos, and raffle prizes. There were 600 people who stopped
by to browse and shop.
