REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, September 6, 2023
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Marilyn Daleo called the meeting to order at 5:08 pm in the
Museum Education Center.

ROLL CALL: Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, Chairpersons Ginny Blitz, Marilyn Daleo, Janalee
Shimmin, Angela Yang -Ayala, Director of Library and Museum Services Darlene
Bradley, Museum Curator Stevy Acevedo, and Museum Education Coordinator
Daniel Estrada.
Commissioner Blitz moved to excuse absentees Janalee Shimmin and Billie Tone. Chairperson
Pro Tempore, Angela Ayala, seconded. Motioned passed unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS:
Mayor Pro Tempore April Verlato was absent, Director Bradley spoke on her behalf. Ms. Verlato
extended an invitation to the commission to attend the next City Council meeting on Tuesday,
September 19,
REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR
Director Bradley mentioned the lack of storage both in the Museum and Education Center. Ms.
Bradley suggested the Commission begin developing a Capital Improvement Project to possibly
extend the Museum storage.
REPORT FROM THE CURATOR
Ms. Acevedo informed the Commission Board of newly donated inventory. Intern Kenny Woo
concluded his internship and boasts the construction of the 1984 Summer Olympics exhibit at City
Hall, the 120`h Anniversary Exhibit at Council Chambers, and the 1201" Anniversary Timeline
exhibit at the Museum. Curator Acevedo continues to work with Girl Scouts Ms. Sohana Sahni
and Ms. Kailani Yamashiro on their Gold Awards. Mr. Estrada and Ms. Acevedo presented
"Strategies for Utilizing Teen Volunteers in Small Museums" at the Lunch and Learn webinar
series for the California Association of Museums. The same presentation will be conducted for
the Western Museum Association Conference in October, Museum Staff's proposal "The Power
of Adults with Special Needs as Volunteer Champions' was accepted by the California
Association of Museums Conference in 2024. Curator Stevy received a request from Mr. Pete
Siberell, the Director of Community Service and Special Projects, with a future project at Santa
Anita Park.
REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR
Museum Education Coordinator Daniel and Intern Angel completed the Summer Enrichment
Program to 132 attendees. A total of 481 kits were made for all four programs: Curator of Art,
Plants, Fossils, and History. Curator Acevedo conducted the Paper Preservation Workshop to 12
guests, preservation kits were funded by the Friends of the Arcadia Museum. Museum staff held
its annual Dino Day event to over 120 visitors. Participants went through five different stations.
The Alf Museum of Paleontology displayed fossils for guests to interact with. 13 volunteers helped
with the event. Mr. Estrada and Intern Corinna conducted the first Preschool Program on
September 1, parents were appreciative of the activities. The School Program request form is
open once again, a total of 29 school programs have been scheduled for the 2023-24 school year.
Programs currently offered are: Tongva Time: Tongva-English Dictionaries, Tongva Time:
Storytelling, Then vs. Now: History Detective, and People Who Make a Difference. Two Girl Scout
Programs are currently scheduled for 2023. The museum will conduct its History Talk for Anita
Baldwin on Saturday, September 9. Mr. Estrada and Ms. Acevedo are continuously planning 2024
programs. Getty Intern Ge assisted in social media campaigns for Instagram and saw a 275%
increase in reached accounts. Teen Volunteer, Ms. Chloe Htut, created a design full of references
to iconic Arcadia landmarks. The design was printed on tote bags intended for visitors to engage
with the 12011 Anniversary Exhibit.
Consent Calendar
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of July 5 2023 at 5:00 p.m. in the Museum
Education Center at 382 W. Huntington Drive Arcadia.
Recommended action: Approve.
Chairperson Pro Tempore Angela Ayala moved to approve Consent Calendar Item "a", which was
seconded by Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, and carried on a voice vote.
