PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. Any writings or documents provided to a majority of the Senior Citizen Commission regarding any item on this agenda will be made available for public inspection at the Arcadia Recreation Department, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia, California, during normal business hours. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES November 2, 2023 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chairperson Salazar ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Charlene Martinez, Kathrynn Penny, Joyce Platt, Nilo Salazar, Donna Salter, Steve Sherman, and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: None ABSENT: Robert Bolster SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice -Chairperson Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club is doing well. The Senior Friendship Club meets on Wednesdays at 11 am at the Assistance League. Club members were excited to celebrate Halloween last week. Vice -Chairperson Swope reported the Club will be celebrating Thanksgiving on November 15, catered by Chef's restaurant and their Christmas lunch will be held on December 13, catered by Stonefire Grill. Every week there are fun activities such as karaoke, birthday celebrations, bingo, and more. Vice -Chairperson Swope said there are a few new people who would like to join the Club. Commissioner Platt reported the guest speaker for the Travelers general meeting on October 27, was Ed Andersen from the Arcadia Historical Society. Afrodite Pastroumas from Premier Travel will be the guest speaker at the November 17 general meeting. Commissioner Platt reported on upcoming trips: On November 6, Club members will visit Warner Brothers Studios for its 100 years as a leader in American film history. On November 20, Club members will take a trip to the City of Glendale to indulge on a chocolate lovers tour. After the chocolate tour, lunch will be held at the San Antonio Winery. On December 4, Club members will be able to enjoy "A Very Merry Mathis Christmas" show. National headliner Richie Merritt will pay tribute to Johnny Mathis playing his hits. Commissioner Platt informed everyone there will be an update on the Derby development at the Museum Education Center on November 15 at 2pm. Commissioner Platt reported the installation of new officers will take place in December. Lastly, Commissioner Platt mentioned residents of the City of Arcadia have received notices of violation regarding the waste recycling program. Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reminded everyone the City of Arcadia adopted the new ordinance in November 2021, that all Arcadia residents and commercial businesses are required to separate organic waste and participate in an organic waste recycling program. DDRCS Cheung said she will work on having a workshop on the recycling program. Commissioner Salter reported she attended the craft fair on Saturday, October 21, and said it was nice to see all the vendors and a variety of merchandise. Commissioner Salter asked if there was a reason there are no streetlights on La Rosa Street in Arcadia. Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung said she would ask and report back at the next meeting. Commissioner Martinez reported that the Bargain Box is having its annual boutique holiday sale on many items, including their jewelry. The doors will open on Wednesday, November 8, through Saturday, November 11 from 10am — 1 pm. Commissioner Martinez reported people look forward to the annual sale and line up early in the morning to be the first to shop and enjoy homemade cookies and coffee. Chairperson Salazar reported there is a paramedic membership program available for Arcadia residents. The application is available online or at the Community Center. Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members enjoyed the Halloween celebration in October, which included a costume contest. The Golden Senior Club meets every Thursday at 11 am. Club members enjoy singing, yoga, monthly guest speakers, birthdays, and holiday celebrations. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez Recreation Supervisor (RS) Gina Hernandez reported on the following events: On Tuesday, October 17, Coffee with Mayor Verlato had 46 people in attendance. Attendees enjoyed her fresh baked scones. Taste the Town shuttle is up and running and now participants have the option to drive to the restaurant or take the shuttle bus available. Taste the Town meets on the third Thursday of the month and is always sold out. The Annual Craft Fair was held on Saturday, October 21, with 600 people in attendance. This year there were many new faces and crafters. On Thursday, November 9, there will be a special Veterans Day lunch event held at the Community Center to honor Veterans. RS Hernandez reported there will be a registration seminar to show individuals how to register online. Soon there will be an option to register online for the lunch program. Vice -Chairperson Swope asked if there was a way to register multiple friends at the same table for a special event. RS Hernandez responded by saying the only way is to register friends is to have their account information approved by the friend or register in person with registration forms filled out by each individual for everyone to seated at the same table for special events. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director DDRCS Cheung distributed copies of the Paramedic Membership Program applications per Chairperson Salazar's request from the last meeting. DDRCS Cheung reported on LA Found, a wonderful project that consists of a trackable bracelet for loved ones who are at -risk to walk away from home or may be lost. The trackable bracelet device allows the Sheriff's Department to locate the individual if they go missing. LA Found representatives will be guests at the next City Council meeting to provide the public with more information. DDRCS Cheung reported the City is providing a kitchen compost bucket to Arcadia residents while supplies last. The bucket is available at the Recreation office with proof of address. DDRCS Cheung asked everyone to pick up their bucket after the meeting. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from 477 7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. Blood Pressure Free blood pressure check is available every month on Check Tuesdays, from 10-1lam in the Community Center. 11 Bridge is available every Wednesdays from 10am-1 pm. Card Bridge games can help improve memory and cognition, it also enhances 88 motor skills and promotes socialization. Chess is available every Thursday from 9:30 to11:30am. The Chess Club game of chess can help increase creativity and critical thinking 6 skills and improve concentration and reading skills. Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone Classes density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can also reduce stress. Some of the classes offered are line 1,795 dance, cardio plus, and Zumba. Coffee with On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors listen and chat with the Mayor the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 36 Gift The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their 127 Visitors Shop creations and allows the community to purchase one -of -a -kind Monthly Revenue items at a great price. $355 Information & This program assists seniors and their families with issues that Referral Intakes affect their quality of life by providing information and referral that 12 address their daily living concerns. The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Lions Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free Sight vision care. Prospective clients are screened to make the 1 necessary arrangements for their free service. Legal The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization Assistance is available once a month at the Community Center to provide 4 seniors with legal insight. Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four Mahjong people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player 32 secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets every Friday at 1 pm. Monday Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each Dance month. This program provides a good element for participants 173 and has a good ratio of male and female dancers. Monthly Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and Bus Pass can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 13 A nutritious meal is provided Monday -Friday. Seniors get to Senior Meals socialize as well as hear about upcoming events and activities. 1,625 Program g Occasionally, short informational talks are provided on assorted Average/Day 77 topics or light entertainment is enjoyed. For many seniors, this is the only hot meal they have daily. Table Table Tennis is available Monday -Friday, from 8am-4pm. Tennis Seniors could drop in and play to exercise and socialize. 177 E ui ment is provided at the front desk. Taste the Town is a monthly program where each month Taste the Town participants meet up at different restaurants, have lunch, and 31 socialize. The November Taste the Town was at Villa Catrina on November 16. Tech Talk is provided for seniors who need assistance with their Tech Talk electronic devices. Volunteens are available every month from 4 4-5 m to assist with their questions and devices. Weekly New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater Movie size screen every Wednesday for free. 54 Sing Along with Sing along with James meets every Wednesday from 1-3pm. James Iranfar James plays his guitar and sings with a group of seniors for fun 111 and socialization. Free seminars on diverse topics are available each month. The Senior following topics were presented in November: Dentistry Seminar, Seminars Balance Scale Demo, Veteran Benefit Seminar, AARP Smart 67 Driver Course, Hearing Screening, Mental Health Presentation & a Registration Seminar. "You've Got This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who a Friend" live alone, feel lonely, or need someone to check in on them. 1 New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed. On Thursday, November 9, 121 seniors came to the Community Center to honor those who served in the military. Arcadia Veteran's Day Veterans received a lawn sign provided by the City, a gift box Luncheon provided by Operation Gratitude, and flowers donated by 121 Breeder's Cup. Several local VFW/American Legion representatives were in attendance. On November 22, 100 seniors attended the Thanksgiving Feast. Thanksgiving The event included a hot, traditional Thanksgiving meal and Feast raffle prizes. An elegant classical music duo played to everyone's 100 delight. Every year, meals are served by the Arcadia Fire Depart ent. Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and handling the club's correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held each month to discuss future trips and provide a social gathering.
