HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 11/01/2023MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, November 1, 2023 CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Marilyn Daleo called the meeting to order at 5:00 pm in the Museum Education Center. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Marilyn Daleo ROLL CALL: Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, Chairpersons Ginny Blitz, Janalee Shimmin, Angela Yang -Ayala, Director of Library and Museum Services Darlene Bradley, Museum Curator Stevy Acevedo, and Museum Education Coordinator Daniel Estrada. Chairperson Daleo motioned to excuse Commissioner Tone. The motion was seconded by Ms. Janalee Shimmin. Motion passed unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS: Paul Cheng assured that his role as liaison is to learn and report any news or concerns to the City's manager. Mr. Cheng informed the Commission of the well -attended Halloween Haunting by community members and council members alike. Liaison Cheng announced the community cleanup day being held on November 11 to beautify the Library by means of gardening REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR Director Bradley announced Pat Smith's December 2 retirement date, Principle Librarian for Adult and Teen Services has taken a new job and recruitment to fill this position will be under way in the next month or two. Director Bradley wished everyone a happy holiday and concluded with the announcement of the ongoing recruitment of substitutes for the Library and Museum Education Coordinator positions. REPORT FROM THE CURATOR Ms. Acevedo informed the board of the progression of collections interns Mr. Jonathan Ornelas, Ms. Maria Barrios, Mr. Zackary Ostrowski, and Ms. Teresa Summers -Garcia. Adult volunteers continue to work on transcription, inventory, curation, digitization, and cataloging projects. Curator Acevedo worked with Girl Scout Ms, Sohana Sahni on her Girl Scout Gold Award. Arcadia Online: The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health. Museum Staff continue to attend AUSD PTA meetings. Staff attended the Mayor's Breakfast on September 6. Staff continued to work on the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Grant application. Museum Staff attended the WMA Conference from October 5 to 8 and presented "Strategies for Utilizing Teen Volunteers in Small Museums." Curator Stevy notified the Commission of the Japanese American National Museum's request for a tour to take place in December. REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR Museum Staff recruited Ms. Corinna Yang as the Education and Public Engagement Intern for Fall 2023. Mr. Estrada and Intern Ms. Yang began the Fall Preschool Program on September 1. Mr. Estrada conducted the final History Talk on Anita Baldwin on September 9. Mr. Estrada and Ms. Acevedo attended the Moon Festival on September 30. The Insects of Arcadia educational Kit became available on October 3. Mr. Estrada has conducted 12 of the 36 scheduled school programs. Staff hosted Pie Day for City employees on October 14. Mr. Estrada announced staff will be attending Downtown Arcadia's Halloween Haunting on October 27. Consent Calendar a. Approve the Reqular Meetinq Minutes of September 6, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. in the Museum Education Center at 382 W. Huntington Drive Arcadia. Recommended action: Approve. Chairperson Pro Tempore Angela Ayala moved to approve Consent Calendar Item "a", which was seconded by Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, and carried on a voice vote.
