The last Preservation Workshop on genealogy was conducted on December 16 with 27 participants. COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS Intern Mr. Jonathan Ornelas continues to work on collections at the Gilb Museum. He is now working on the inventory of the Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association Collection. Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano continues to work on the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection transcription on FromThePage.com. She has also assisted Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo with research projects for 2024. Intern Ms. Maria Barrios finished working on the inventory, curation, and digitization of the Santa Anita Athletic Club Collection. She is now working on the Mary Hansen Collection recently donated to the Museum. Intern Mr. Zackary Ostrowski continues to work on the inventory, curation, and digitization of the (Sandy) Silverstein Collection. Volunteer Mr. Alick Diaz completed the inventory, curation, digitization, and cataloging new items from the Arcadia Education Foundation Collection. Volunteer Mr. Stuard Arief is new at the Gilb Museum. He has been helping with the front desk as well as scanning collection items for Curator Acevedo. Intern Ms. Teresa Summers-Garcia completed her internship as part of her academic work for the University of Denver Master of Library Science Program on December 2. She has worked on inventory, curation, and cataloging of recent donations given to the Museum. She completed the temporary exhibit at the Arcadia Public Library on the history of Santa Anita Park. Curator Acevedo has agreed to host another intern from the program in the Winter 2024. Volunteer Mr. Emmanuel Fernandez has also completed his time at the Gilb Museum. He needed to complete 130 volunteer hours for academic credit from the University of Southern Mississippi. Mr. Fernandez worked on the inventory, curation, and digitization of the American Legion Post 247 Collection. Staff has interviewed Mr. Andrew Bermudez for an internship next year within the Museum’s collections. He received his bachelor’s from the California State University of Los Angeles in anthropology and has previous experience volunteering at the Natural History Museum of Los 2 Angeles County. He will be provided compensation through the Southern California Resource Services for Independent Living. An inventory of all items donated during this time period: ➢ The Arcadia Assistance League donated local cookbooks created by civic organizations and local churches in Arcadia. ➢ The Arcadia Fire Department donated a shirt from their breast cancer awareness fundraiser. ➢ Mr. Michael Zion donated his yearbooks from Dana Middle School from 1968 to 1970. He also donated three yearbooks from Arcadia High School that were given to the Arcadia Public Library History Room. ➢ Ms. Mary Buttice from the City Manager’s Office donated three lanyards and tickets from the 2024 Breeders Cup. These have been placed in the Arcadia Public Library temporary exhibit for the public to see. ➢ Mr. Oliver Beckwith from the Monrovia Historical Museum donated two yearbooks from 1984 and 1985 that were from Holy Angels School in Arcadia. ➢ Ms. Janalee Shimmin donated items from Mary Hansen, that include awards, certificates, and a scrapbook. ➢ Ms. Darlene Bradley donated her copy of Heninger Flats by Paul H. Rippens book. EXHIBITS Curator Acevedo, Ms. Rebecca Andersen, and Intern Summers-Garcia designed and installed the temporary exhibit at Arcadia Public Library on the history of Santa Anita Park. The exhibit will be on display from November and December. Curator Acevedo is beginning to collect red envelopes from the community to include in next year's Red Envelope Exhibit, opening on February 3, 2024. This exhibit will include red envelopes designed by community members of all ages highlighting the Year of the Dragon. Curator Acevedo and Ms. Andersen are currently working on the exhibit list for 2024, including the exhibits around the City of Arcadia. The Museum has replaced their plotter printer that helps staff create exhibit panels. ADMINISTRATION On November 7, Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia PTA meeting. At the meeting, she shared what current events and programs are available to the Arcadia community, including the Preschool Program, Red Envelope Exhibit, and Educational Kits. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their November and December board meetings in the Museum Education Center. Museum staff discussed current and ongoing projects and events with the Board members. FAM helped staff prepare for the Make Your Own Snow Globe event on December 2. They included 400 candy canes in the gingerbread giveaways that the Museum teen volunteers designed. FAM also helped staff decorate the lobbies at the Museum and Museum Education Center on November 29. Their next meeting will take place on February 1, 2024 in the Museum Education Center. 3 Curator Acevedo completed the work on the City of Arcadia Capital Improvement Project for the 76 plaques that create the Walk of Champions on Huntington Drive. Silverlake Conservation company completed the project before the Breeders Cup event at Santa Anita Park on November 3 and 4. Silverlake Conservation will be working on the Peacock Fountain in 2024. The Museum continues to work with Human Resources in the recruitment of new Museum Education Coordinator substitutes to assist the staff at the Gilb Museum. Interviews will be conducted in January 2024. Curator Acevedo and Museum Education coordinator Estrada gave a tour to the Japanese American National Museum on December 14. The tour included a look at the Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibits, as well as a behind-the-scenes look in the collection space. Mr. Estrada completed his National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpreter Guide certification. This 4-week program will help Museum Education Coordinator Estrada develop new and enriching programs for the community. Staff is currently scheduling speakers for programs scheduled in 2024, including documentary screenings of Saging the World and Norman Mineta and his Legacy: An American Story. Staff is also collaborating with First Avenue Middle School teacher Ms. Karalee Nakatsuka in providing future programs at the middle school level. Ms. Nakatsuka was named the 2019 California History Teacher of the Year. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING Museum Education Coordinator Estrada and Intern Ms. Corinna Yang completed the Fall 2023 Preschool Program on Friday, November 17. The Preschool Program will resume once again on February 2, 2024. Ms. Yang has concluded her internship at the Museum. The Staff appreciated all her support. The Museum is recruiting for an Educational Intern for Winter 2024. This intern will be once again be working with Education Coordinator Estrada with the Preschool Program as well as developing social media posts for the Museum. The Make Your Own Snow Globe event occurred on Saturday, December 2. The program offered 456 snow globes to the community. Snow Globes were all claimed by 11:30 a.m. The Museum Education Center welcomed over 660 guests to the event. Over 200 community members participated in the scavenger hunt in the Museum. 200 Birds of Arcadia Kits were given out to the community as well. The Museum was able to collect a significant number of red envelopes for the upcoming Lunar New Year Exhibit. The Birds of Arcadia Kit became available on November 2. 400 kits were created to give out during the Make Your Own Snow Globe event and for those who registered online. These kits were put together by both the Museum’s teen volunteers and adult volunteers with special needs. Girl Scout Jolee Kuo from the Arcadia Public Library provided an insert with information on birding and local birds with a QR code that links to her website and Gold Award. The next kit will be Lunar New Year: Year of the Dragon, available starting January 9, 2024. In total, the Gilb Museum has given out over 5,400 kits in 2023 to the Arcadia community throughout the year. 4 The Gilb Museum has 43 school programs scheduled at various elementary schools in Arcadia Unified School District for the 2023-2024 school year. The programs offered include Tongva Time and Then vs. Now during the months of November and December. Mr. Estrada has conducted 21 of the 43 scheduled programs in 2023. Mr. Estrada conducted the last Preservation Workshop for this year on December 16. The Genealogy Preservation Workshop had 27 participants. Many were happy to learn techniques used in museums, that they too can use to preserve personal and family history. Participants also appreciated the Preservation Kits, which were generously funded by the Friends of the Arcadia Museum. The participants were given the Preservation Workshop series list for 2024. The first program will be the Textile Preservation Workshop on February 3, 2024. The Gilb Museum continues to provide Scout programs to local troops. Mr. Estrada conducted the Celebrating Community program on November 4. Curator Acevedo provided a tour to a local Cub Scouts troop on December 9. MARKETING Museum staff continue to promote the Museum’s collection as well as events on its social media platforms. Reels on Instagram continue to be very popular and encourage patrons to visit the Museum to receive a free tote bag highlighting the City of Arcadia 120th anniversary. A Reel advertising Red Envelope decorating was posted on November 8 to over 2,500 views - the Museum’s highest viewed Reel to date. The Museum has received a large following in its monthly newsletter via MailChimp. There are over 1,200 registered to the newsletter. Individuals can sign up on the Museum’s website. VOLUNTEERS Mr. Estrada continues to actively recruit volunteers throughout the year. Currently, the Museum has 60 volunteers, which include teens, adults, and adults with special needs. Volunteers are continuing production on the upcoming Lunar New Year: Year of the Dragon Educational Kit. Mr. Estrada is also working on developing the new kit lesson and activities for the upcoming kits in 2024. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Marilyn Daleo ROLL CALL: Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, Chairpersons Ginny Blitz, Janalee Shimmin, Angela Yang-Ayala, Director of Library and Museum Services Darlene Bradley, Museum Curator Stevy Acevedo, and Museum Education Coordinator Daniel Estrada. Chairperson Daleo motioned to excuse Commissioner Tone. The motion was seconded by Ms. Janalee Shimmin. Motion passed unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS: Paul Cheng assured that his role as liaison is to learn and report any news or concerns to the City’s manager. Mr. Cheng informed the Commission of the well-attended Halloween Haunting by community members and council members alike. Liaison Cheng announced the community cleanup day being held on November 11 to beautify the Library by means of gardening REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR Director Bradley announced Pat Smith’s December 2 retirement date, Principle Librarian for Adult and Teen Services has taken a new job and recruitment to fill this position will be under way in the next month or two. Director Bradley wished everyone a happy holiday and concluded with the announcement of the ongoing recruitment of substitutes for the Library and Museum Education Coordinator positions. REPORT FROM THE CURATOR Ms. Acevedo informed the board of the progression of collections interns Mr. Jonathan Ornelas, Ms. Maria Barrios, Mr. Zackary Ostrowski, and Ms. Teresa Summers-Garcia. Adult volunteers continue to work on transcription, inventory, curation, digitization, and cataloging projects. Curator Acevedo worked with Girl Scout Ms. Sohana Sahni on her Girl Scout Gold Award; Arcadia Online: The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health. Museum Staff continue to attend AUSD PTA meetings. Staff attended the Mayor’s Breakfast on September 6. Staff continued to work on th e Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Grant application. Museum Staff attended the WMA Conference from October 5 to 8 and presented “Strategies for Utilizing Teen Volunteers in Small Museums.” Curator Stevy notified the Commission of the Japanese American National Museum’s request for a tour to take place in December. REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR Museum Staff recruited Ms. Corinna Yang as the Education and Public Engagement Intern for Fall 2023. Mr. Estrada and Intern Ms. Yang began the Fall Preschool Program on September 1. Mr. Estrada conducted the final History Talk on Anita Baldwin on September 9. Mr. Estrada and Ms. Acevedo attended the Moon Festival on September 30. The Insects of Arcadia educational Kit became available on October 3. Mr. Estrada has conducted 12 of the 36 scheduled school programs. Staff hosted Pie Day for City employees on October 14. Mr. Estrada announced staff will be attending Downtown Arcadia’s Halloween Haunting on October 27. Consent Calendar a.
