1.PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON)
Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes
per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior
Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the
posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or
action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER –Chairperson Nilo Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Charlene Martinez, Donna Salter, Steve Sherman, Nilo
Salazar, and Margaret Swope
EXCUSED: Kathryn Penny and Joyce Platt
A motion was made by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Sherman and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Penny.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice-Chairperson Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club had a nice holiday party and
everyone is happy to be back after the holidays. The Senior Friendship Club meets on
Wednesdays at 11am at the Assistance League.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box will open on Wednesday, January 10, and
Saturday, January 13, from 10am to 1pm. Commissioner Martinez reported she attended the
Volunteer Holiday Breakfast and said it was nice, the food and entertainment were great, and she
was happy to have been invited. Commissioner Martinez reported she was happy to receive a
nice holiday card from Council Member Paul Cheng.
Commissioner Salter said she enjoyed the Volunteer Holiday Breakfast and the entertainment by
Comedian, Steve Mittleman.
Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club is doing well and everyone is happy and
healthy. There are many fun plans coming up in 2024, such as activities, guest speakers, food,
and most importantly bingo.
Commissioner Sherman reported the Men’s Club currently has six members. Commissioner
Sherman reported he enjoys playing cards at the Arcadia Community Center with friends followed
by lunch. Commissioner Sherman reported he stopped by to see a game of pickleball at Camino
Grove Park, however, it looks to be too hard for him to play.
Commissioner Bolster reported he plans to attend City Council meetings and inquire about
Wilderness Park and the status of any plans for the opening of the park. Recreation Supervisor
Gina Hernandez (RS) gave Commissioner Bolster copies of photos of the park to show him what
the park currently looks like at this time.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Regular meeting minutes of December 7, 2023.

It was moved by Commissioner Sherman seconded by Commissioner Salter and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

1. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Gina Hernandez
RS Hernandez reported on the following senior programs and events: Tax appointments are now
open for the month of February. AARP volunteers offer free tax preparation services for low-
income individuals who are 50 years of age or older. Bridge is available every Wednesday from
10am to 1pm. Mahjong is available every Friday from 1 to 3pm. Movies take place on
Wednesdays at 1pm. All of these programs take place at the Arcadia Community Center unless
it is specified on flyers. Lunch tickets are now available for to purchase online. The Arthritis
Foundation Exercise Program is offered for free from January 9, through February 20, from 8:30-
9:30am.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
RS Hernandez reported on behalf of the Recreation and Community Services Director. It is now
the time of year to nominate the 2023 Senior of the year. Nomination forms are available at the
Community Center, online, or it can be emailed. The Health Committee is offering free education
series each month with different medical-related topics. On January 24, the topic will be
Concussions and Brain Injuries, and will be held at the Arcadia Public Library at 6pm.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salazar adjourned the meeting at 4:30pm to February 1, 2024, at 4:00pm in the

SUBJECT: Senior Services, Programs and Activities for January 2024
Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude
of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE
Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from
7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. 411
Blood Pressure
Check
Free blood pressure check is available every month on
Tuesdays, from 10-11am in the Community Center. 15
Bridge
Bridge is available every Wednesdays from 10am-1pm. Card
games can help improve memory and cognition, it also enhances
motor skills and promotes socialization.

Chess Club
Chess is available every Thursday from 9:30 to11:30am. The
game of chess can help increase creativity and problem-solving
skills and improve concentration and reading skills.

Classes
Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone
density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and
can also reduce stress. Some of the classes offered are line
dance, cardio plus, and Zumba.

the Mayor
On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors listen and chat with
the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 36

Shop
The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their
creations and allows the community to purchase one-of-a-kind
items at a great price.

This program assists seniors and their families with issues that
affect their quality of life by providing information and referral that
address their daily living concerns.

Lions
Sight
The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the
Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors with
free vision care. Prospective clients are screened to make the
necessary arrangements for their free service.

Legal
Assistance
The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization
is available once a month at the Community Center to provide
seniors with legal insight.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin usually played by four
people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player
secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets every Friday at 1pm.
Every third Friday of the month, the Mayor joins in and plays
Mahjong with the Seniors.

Dance
Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each
month. This program provides a good element for participants
and has a good ratio of male and female dancers.

Bus Pass
Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and
can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 23

Program
A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday. For many seniors,
this is the only hot meal they have daily.

Tennis
Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8am-4pm.
Seniors could drop in and play to exercise and socialize.

Taste the Town
Taste the Town is a monthly program where each month
participants meet up at different restaurants, have lunch, and
socialize. The January Taste the Town visited Chengdu
Impression on January 18.

Tech Talk
Tech Talk is provided for individuals who need assistance with
their electronic devices. Volunteens are available every month
from 4-5pm to assist with their questions and devices.

Movie
New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater
size screen every Wednesday for free. 106
Sing Along with
James Iranfar
Sing Along with James meets every Wednesday from 1-3pm.
James plays his guitar and sings with a group of seniors for fun
and socialization.

Seminars
Free seminars on various topics are available each month. The
following topics were presented in January: Maximizing the
Benefits - Gratitude, Thyroid Disease, Recycle Right and
Memory Matters Seminar.

“You’ve Got
a Friend”
This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who
live alone, feel lonely, or need someone to check in on them.
New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed.

New Year’s
Bingo
On January 12, the Arcadia Community Center held a New
Year’s theme bingo with 92 participants who enjoyed eight
games of bingo, a light lunch, and a raffle.

Moments
On January 26, Jay Briggs performed lovely Jazz music for 32
seniors. Jay Briggs also talked about the background and history
of Jazz music. The presentation was enjoyed by all.

Travelers Club
Support services include registering members for trips, signing
up new members, and handling the club’s correspondence. A
monthly club meeting is held each month to discuss future trips
and provide a social gathering.
