January 4, 2024
SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER —Chairperson Nilo Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE —Chairperson Salazar
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Charlene Martinez, Donna Salter, Steve Sherman, Nilo
Salazar, and Margaret Swope
EXCUSED: Kathryn Penny and Joyce Platt
A motion was made by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Sherman and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioner Penny.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice -Chairperson Swope reported the Senior Friendship Club had a nice holiday party and
everyone is happy to be back after the holidays. The Senior Friendship Club meets on
Wednesdays at 11 am at the Assistance League.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box will open on Wednesday, January 10, and
Saturday, January 13, from 10am to 1 pm. Commissioner Martinez reported she attended the
Volunteer Holiday Breakfast and said it was nice, the food and entertainment were great, and she
was happy to have been invited. Commissioner Martinez reported she was happy to receive a
nice holiday card from Council Member Paul Cheng.
Commissioner Salter said she enjoyed the Volunteer Holiday Breakfast and the entertainment by
Comedian, Steve Mittleman.
Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club is doing well and everyone is happy and
healthy. There are many fun plans coming up in 2024, such as activities, guest speakers, food,
and most importantly bingo.
Commissioner Sherman reported the Men's Club currently has six members. Commissioner
Sherman reported he enjoys playing cards at the Arcadia Community Center with friends followed
by lunch. Commissioner Sherman reported he stopped by to see a game of pickleball at Camino
Grove Park, however, it looks to be too hard for him to play.
Commissioner Bolster reported he plans to attend City Council meetings and inquire about
Wilderness Park and the status of any plans for the opening of the park, Recreation Supervisor
Gina Hernandez (RS) gave Commissioner Bolster copies of photos of the park to show him what
the park currently looks like at this time.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Regular meeting minutes of December 7, 2023.
Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved by Commissioner Sherman seconded by Commissioner Salter and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

1. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Gina Hernandez
RS Hernandez reported on the following senior programs and events: Tax appointments are now
open for the month of February. AARP volunteers offer free tax preparation services for low-
income individuals who are 50 years of age or older. Bridge is available every Wednesday from
10am to 1 pm. Mahjong is available every Friday from 1 to 3pm. Movies take place on
Wednesdays at 1 pm. All of these programs take place at the Arcadia Community Center unless
it is specified on flyers. Lunch tickets are now available for to purchase online. The Arthritis
Foundation Exercise Program is offered for free from January 9, through February 20, from 8:30-
9:30am.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director
RS Hernandez reported on behalf of the Recreation and Community Services Director. It is now
the time of year to nominate the 2023 Senior of the year. Nomination forms are available at the
Community Center, online, or it can be emailed. The Health Committee is offering free education
series each month with different medical -related topics. On January 24, the topic will be
Concussions and Brain Injuries, and will be held at the Arcadia Public Library at 6pm.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salazar adjourned the meeting at 4:30pm to February 1, 2024, at 4:OOpm in the
Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
