ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2024
Highlights: January was a month filled with recruitment. Library Aide interviews were held on
January 4 and three conditional offers were made. Recruitments for the Library Services Manager
and Adult Principal Librarian are still under way. The part-time Librarian recruitment opened on
January 25. The Passport Clerk interviews will take place in February. Maxine Morishita was
promoted from an Aide to a part-time Technician. Children’s Principal Librarian Petra Morris is
currently Acting Library Services Manager. Passport Services received their annual recertification
for 2024. The Library’s Integrated Library System (KOHA) was upgraded to version 23.05.07.
Staff began planning for this year’s Summer at Arcadia Public Library program. There were three
English Conversation Classes with 25 participants. The Library received a $1000 donation from
a previous Library Board Member.
Fun Fact: The busiest day of the week was Wednesday, January 24 with 1,434 visitors.
Adult Programs, Classes, Technology Literacy, and Events:
Year three of the Winter Break Reading Challenge
ended on January 6. The community read a grand
total of 26,133 minutes, compared to the 12,095
minutes read last year. Bookish kicked off the new
year with Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout. The
book discussion was led by the Director, and two
new members joined the group. Patrons watched
and discussed Belfast, a 2021 UK film, at the
International Film Program. They enjoyed
refreshments and had a light discussion about the
topics in the film. A Smart Start in Investing was held
on January 20 in the Auditorium. Antonia Villasenor
from the Department of Financial Protection and
Innovation spoke about how patrons can safely
invest. The patrons enjoyed the presentation and engaged with the presenter. Smart Squad
assisted 15 drop-in patrons with technology-related devices. CraftABLE’s January kit included
materials to make a paper fortune cookie. Two surveys were submitted from patrons expressing
how much they enjoy the service, as well as suggestions for other possible crafts.

Teen Programing:
January was Self-Love month. The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) and the Library hosted Love my
Selfie for the second year in a row on January 25, with 68 teens in attendance. This was a fun K-
pop and selfies inspired event featuring K-pop music, a create-your-own comic craft table and a
Polaroid photobooth with props and stickers to decorate pictures. There were eleven Teen Zone
sessions with 304 teen participants in January. Students continue to use Teen Zone as a space
to study, create art, and play board games. TAG volunteers were recently re-trained with Teen
Zone procedures to continue to keep the space safe and fun. Additionally, the teens met to
discuss upcoming events and this year’s Summer at Arcadia Public Library reading program.
Children’s Programming:
The weekly storytime programs have been renamed Seedlings (for ages 4 to 23 months), Sprouts
(for ages 24 to 47 months), and Blooms (for ages 4 to 7 years). In January, ten early literacy
programs were offered with 537 children and their family members/caretakers in attendance.
Five second grade classes from Baldwin Stocker Elementary School visited the Library with 200
students in attendance.
3
The Children’s librarian hosted a book party in celebration of the popular Food Group children’s
book series written by Jory John, with 56 participants.
High School student Katelynn Liu, hosted a “Kid Created: Wow! That’s STEM” program with 13
participants who were guided through the process of building their own wind turbines.
Three local High School students hosted a game development program for 9 children in third
through sixth grades. Participants learned how to use Scratch to code their own video games.
Collections: In January, 904 items were catalogued, and 653 items were discarded. Staff
completed an ongoing weeding project for the adult and children’s magazine collections of which
1,549 items were discarded. The most circulated book was Greg Heffley’s journal with 92
checkouts.
Facilities and Technology: With the recent storms, the Children’s room continues to suffer from
water leaks in the Fairytale and Picture book sections. A new 3D printer was recently purchased,
4
and a soft rollout began in January. The public can submit one free 3D print per month.
Chromebooks are currently being added to the new software management console and staff are
training in how to use the software. Ten new Chromebooks will be available to the public starting
March 1. Users will be able to checkout Chromebooks for seven days. There were 4,092 unique
Wi-Fi users and a total of 4.4TB of data downloaded and/or uploaded this month. There were 362
computer/technical questions answered by the Computer Aides and they also assisted the public
with 999 public computer sessions, 768 print jobs, public copiers, and public Wi-Fi.
Staffing/Training: Adult Services staff attended the Arcadia Historical Society meeting in mid-
January. The Director attended a Southern California Library Cooperative annual Strategic Plan
session at the Santa Monica Public Library. Children’s staff attended Building Good Work
Relationships webinar. Information Systems Services staff trained on how to use new features
available on the new 3D printer. Aide Edgar Perez submitted his letter of resignation, his last day
is Saturday, March 1. Aide Esmeralda Albarran started training at the Account Services desk.
New Aide rotations were assigned. Rotations allow staff to learn about a different department
every three to four months. Staff gain a different skill set and it prepares them for front desk
training.

COUNTY PARK LOVE-IN
Crowds of friends, lovers, and strangers gathered on June 4, 1967 at Arcadia County Park to
express universal love at the “love-in” held there. The summer of 1967 is often referred to as
the “Summer of Love.” What started off as a hippie counterculture movement in San Francisco
quickly spread to other parts of the country, like here in Arcadia. The basic defining principle of
the hippie era was the belief that humans are free to do whatever they want, as long as they
remain socially responsible. Hippies espoused the ideals of peace and love. Photograph by
Milton Bell.
If you are interested in Arcadia’s rich history, make an appointment to see the Arcadia History
Room located at the Arcadia Public Library or visit the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. The

LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2024
CALL TO ORDER – Chair Elizabeth Renfrew called the meeting to order at 4:32 p.m., in the
Conference Room of the Library.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Trustee Carter
ROLL CALL: Chair Elizabeth Renfrew; Trustees Pardha Akalamkam, Miriam Carter, Connie
Liao, Carlton Seaver; Michael Cao (City Council Liaison); Director of Library &
Museum Services Darlene Bradley (Secretary); Library Services Managers
Samantha Alba, Petra Morris.
ABSENT – Trustee Pardha Akalamkam
PUBLIC COMMENTS – None
REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS: A Sympathy card was distributed to Board
members and will be provided for Trustee Akalamkam. Trustee Carter requested an update on
the homeless. Trustee Renfrew announced that the Library will serve as a voting location in the
Auditorium for an eleven-day period. During that time the Library’s Bookstore will stay open until
7:00 p.m. There will also be Friends of the Library book sales in March and April. Friends of the
Library membership is down, but they continue to work on this. City Council Liaison Cao
announced that the City’s Health Committee would host a seminar about concussions and brain
injuries at the Library on January 24. Registration is encouraged. Seminars are not exclusive to
seniors and topics will be open to a younger and working audience. The Health Committee will
continue to host monthly health seminars relating to disabilities and mental illness.
REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items
Director’s Update: Library Services Manager Alba conducted the report as Director Bradley
was traveling back to the Library from a Southern California Library Cooperative Director’s
forum in Santa Monica. Library Services Manager Alba announced that there was a correction
to the December statistical report as the circulation counts for the teen and juvenile were
transposed. Director Bradley discussed the family restroom project and explained that the
$500,000 construction cost is too high for the City to support. There is also a time constraint
with the grant as the project would need to be completed by the end of this year. She will likely
have to give back the grant to the State Library and wait until another grant opportunity is
available.
Monthly Statistical Report: November/December 2023: Trustee Seaver commented that the
report reflected numbers from the time of the pandemic but requested numbers for pre-COVID.
Library Services Manager Alba responded that the reports do not reflect pre-COVID numbers, but
the statistics have steadily increased. Library Services Manager Alba explained that Passport
Service revenue was a little down due to staffing shortages. Trustee Carter requested money for
the English Conversation Class and commented that there used to be funding for it. Library
Services Manager Alba announced that Library Services Manager Pat Smith retired on December
2, 2023, but continues to volunteer for the English Conversation Class program.
Monthly Narrative Report: November/December 2023: Trustee Seaver complimented that the
November and December narratives were good. Library Services Manager Alba acknowledged
that Director Bradley included a “Fun Fact” into the reports and acknowledged a photo of Council
Liaison Cao, in the December 2023 monthly report, “pushing in” the new fire truck at Station 107.
Financial Report: November/December 2023: Trustee Seaver commented that he cannot pull
any useful information from the financial report. Library Services Manager Alba shared that
supply and services spending is on point and staff is keeping up with spending.
Staff Update: Library Services Manager Alba announced that Children’s Services Supervisor
Petra Morris will serve as Acting Library Services Manager and Maxine Morishita has been
promoted to Library Technician I in Adult and Teen Services. The Library will need to do a new
recruitment for the Adult Services Principal Librarian as a conditional offer was made during the
first recruitment but the candidate declined the offer. Trustee Seaver asked what happens to
funds from vacant positions. Dr. Cao explained that funds go back to the City’s general funds.
He added that all municipalities are having difficulty recruiting employees as they are competing
with other municipalities. Library Services Manager Alba announced that six new Library Aides
were hired in October 2023 and four conditional offers were recently made. A new Passport
Clerk, Hannah Pennington, was also hired.
Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Director Bradley announced there will be a Textile
Preservation Workshop on February 3. There will also be a Red Envelope Exhibit in February.
The Museum’s Photography contest will begin March 5.
Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: January 2024: Board members reviewed
the calendar.
Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: February 2024: Trustee Renfrew inquired
about the Book Lovers Craft Night and Director Bradley explained that there have been requests
from patrons about a return to adult crafting programs which were held pre-pandemic. Adult and
Teen Services will be trying this program in response to the requests.
Calendar of Activities for Children’s Services: January 2024: Board members reviewed the
calendar.
Calendar of Activities for Children’s Services: February 2024: Chair Renfrew inquired if there
would be events in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Acting Library Services Manager Morris
reviewed all upcoming Children’s programs in February.
Flyers/Articles/Posters/Attachments: Board members reviewed materials.
Featured Historical Photo: I Love a Parade: Director Bradley gave a brief description of the
Arcadia float that was entered in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade in 1968.
Announcements: Director Bradley announced that the Library had been granted $500 as part of
ByWater Solutions Community Giveback. $250 will be allocated for Chinese Language materials
and $250 will be used to purchase filament for the 3D printer. Trustee Carter inquired when the
Board of Trustees would go on a field to visit a Library as they had not visited a Library since the
pandemic. Trustee Renfrew commented that the Board should visit a library similar to Arcadia
Public Library. Director Bradley suggested that this could be added to the agenda for the next
Board meeting.
