HIGHLIGHTS
The Gilb Museum opened its new Red Envelope
Exhibit on February 3 which contains red envelopes
decorated by members of the community highlighting
the Year of the Dragon. The first Preservation
Workshop on textiles was conducted on February 2
with 15 participants.
COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS
Intern Mr. Jonathan Ornelas continues to work on collections at the Gilb Museum. He is now
working on the inventory of the Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association Collection. Mr.
Ornelas is also working with Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo on the submission of the Ruth and
Charles Gilb Collection to California Revealed after their nomination for the collection was
accepted to be on the California State Library repository.
Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano continues to work on the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection
transcription on FromThePage.com. She has also assisted Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo with
research projects for this year.
Intern Ms. Maria Barrios is now working on the Chamber of Commerce Collection which consists
of more than 800 items. This collection was previously worked on by a past intern but not
completed. Ms. Barrios is also interested in getting more hands-on experience with exhibits.
Intern Mr. Zackary Ostrowski continues to work on the inventory, curation, and digitization of the
(Sandy) Silverstein Collection. He has been able to catalog over 75% of the collection since he
began at the Museum last year.
Volunteer Mr. Alick Diaz completed the inventory, curation, digitization, and cataloging of new
items from the Arcadia Education Foundation collection. He is now working on the digitization and
cataloging of recent donations given to the Museum this year.
Volunteer Mr. Stuart Arief is new at the Gilb Museum. He has been helping with the front desk as
well as scanning collection items for Curator Acevedo. He also assisted staff with the installation
of the Red Envelope Exhibit.
Intern Mr. Andrew Bermudez began his internship at the Gilb Museum on January 19. He will be
provided compensation through the Southern California Resource Services for Independent

Living. Mr. Bermudez has a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the California State University
Los Angeles and has experience volunteering at the Los Angeles County Natural History
Museum. He is working on learning how to conduct an inventory, curation, digitization, and
cataloging of collections. On his first day, Mr. Bermudez completed three collections. He is
currently working on the Tom Payne Collection.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Ms. Ms. Mary Buttice from the City Manager's Office donated photographs of City
Council members attending events from 2009. She also donated photographs of City
Council members from the past three years as well as
City Clerk Mr. Gene Glasco.
Mr. David Payne donated items belonging to his father
Mr. Thomas Payne, a past drama teacher at Arcadia
High School. Items include tickets and programs from
past performances from the 60's and 70's, as well as
his letterman’s jacket.
Ms. Vivian Myrdahl donated 30 digital copies of
photographs from her Business Hair Etc. in Arcadia
while it was being built in the 1970's.
Ms. Carolyn Tokarsky and her sister Ms. Mary Lou
Bonner donated a Boy Scout bag, as well as
documents of when their mother was a leader for Camp
Fire Girls in Arcadia. They also donated an Arcadia
High School Program and a First Avenue Middle School
party planning document.
Ms. Janet Peters donated documents belonging to her late husband Mr. William Peters
who helped with the restoration of the Hugo Reid Adobe at the Los Angeles County
Arboretum. She also donated a Queen Anne Cottage painting as well as an Arcadia
drawing.
Ms. Karalee Wong Nakatsuka, a local history teacher, donated several items related to
First Avenue Middle School, including several school spirit shirts, a 100 Anniversary pin,
and a 110-anniversary pen. She also donated her new book Bring History and Civics to
Life: Lessons and Strategies to Cultivate Informed, Empathetic Citizens by Karalee
Wong Nakasuka and Laurel Aguilar-Kirchhoff. Other items in her donation included
some 1984 Summer Olympics memorabilia, including a Summer Olympics Bag, Sammy
the Eagle plushie, and a full Coca Cola bottle still in the original box.
Ms. Janalee Shimmin donated an Arcadia High School commemorative plate on behalf
of Mr. Randy Wolreck.
Ms. Rebecca Holmes donated four exhibit panels of Arcadia history previously on
display at Burlington Coat Factory store in Arcadia. The store closed indefinitely on
January 26, 2024. These will be installed at the Museum Education Center.
Mr. Earl Bres donated four photographs: three of them from the Rose Garden in Los
Angeles and one from the Huntington Library from the 1950s to 70s. These photographs
will be used as examples for the Museum's Preservation Workshops.
Dr. Semeen Issa, the Principal at First Avenue Middle School, donated yearbooks from
2000, 2001, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2016. She also donated three paintings from First
Avenue Middle School possibly painted by previous students, as well as an 100 years
Anniversary mug.
EXHIBITS
Curator Acevedo, staff member Ms. Rebecca Andersen and several museum volunteers and
interns worked on the installation of the Red Envelope Exhibit, which opened on February 3, 2024.
The exhibit includes red envelopes designed by community members of all ages highlighting the

Year of the Dragon. Three teen volunteers also created a silhouette of the dragon previously on
the Anoakia urn fountain that had had been previously removed.
Curator Acevedo and Ms. Andersen also began
working on updating the Veterans Local History
Room exhibit to highlight City Clerk and Vietnam
Veteran Mr. Gene Glasco and past Mayor and
Navy Veteran Ms. Mary Young.
Staff worked on the installation of the exhibit
“Vintage Hollywood at Santa Anita” at the City
Council Cashiers office. These photographs from
the Museum’s collection highlight celebrities
visiting the racetrack between the 1930’s to the
1950’s. Staff members Ms. Andersen and Ms.
Victoria Jacques worked with Curator Acevedo with the production, curation, and installation of
the exhibit on February 15.
ADMINISTRATION
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their February board meeting in the
Museum Education Center. Museum staff discussed current and ongoing projects and events
with the Board members. Curator Acevedo is working with the board to create this year's
membership letter that will be sent out to new and previous members. Their next meeting will take
place on March 7, 2024.
Curator Acevedo is currently working with Silverlake Conservation on the Peacock Fountain
located in the Los Angeles County Park. Conservation and restoration work will be done on the
fountain itself, replacing broken and missing tiles, as well as having the bronze peacock in the
fountain waxed. The project will begin towards the end of February and finish by the end of April.
Staff has scheduled speakers for the documentary screenings of Saging the World and Norman
Mineta and his Legacy: An American Story. Ms. Rose Ramirez and Ms. Debra Nakatomi have
agreed to participate in the documentary events and conduct a Q&A after the movies.
Staff hosted teachers from Arcadia Unified School District for Teacher Collaboration Day on
January 18. Teachers were able to get a tour of the Museum's exhibits as well as collection space.
Staff had a conversation with them to see what school programs the Museum provides and what
other programs they can develop for the future for them.
Curator Acevedo visited First Avenue Middle School teacher Ms. Karalee Nakatsuka and Principal
Dr. Semeen Issa on January 25 to see how the Museum can collaborate with them. Curator
Acevedo will be visiting First Avenue once again in March to look at the school's archival collection
and see what can be done to preserve it. First Avenue Middle School is the first and oldest school
in the Arcadia Unified School District.
Staff visited the Los Angeles County Arboretum to see the Librarian
Ms. Leena Waller on January 26. She showed staff the Arboretum’s
collection, including the rare book collection. She has been in this
position for 9 months and is interested in future collaborations with the
Museum. She has been in attendance to the Museums Preservation
Workshop Series last year and this year.
Staff provided a tour to new City of Arcadia employees on February
2. This allowed them to learn more about the history of the City as well
as see the Museum’s new Red Envelope Exhibit before the opening.

On February 6, Museum Education Coordinator Mr. Daniel Estrada attended the Arcadia PTA
meeting luncheon at the Church of the Good Shepherd. At the meeting, he shared what current
events and programs are available to the Arcadia community, including the School Programs,
Preschool Program, Red Envelope Exhibit, and Educational Kits.
Curator Acevedo attended the Pomona College Social Impact in Education Career Fair in
Claremont on February 14. She shared internship opportunities with college students available at
the Gilb Museum during the summer and fall. The internship opportunities available to the
students in the fall are already available to view on Handshake.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
The Spring Preschool Program began Friday, February 2 and saw
14 preschoolers registered with 11 in attendance. The program
will run for 10 weeks until April 5. Mr. Estrada and Ms. Acevedo
are in collaboration with Girl Scout Ms. Rachel Lee to have her
conduct virtually five art lessons during the Preschool Program for
her Art Museum in the Kid’s Corner. The art mediums include
clay, watercolor, acrylic, and line art. The Free Art Museum will
be on display beginning March 1.
The Museum hosted its first Preservation Workshop on textiles on
February 3. Conducted by Curator Acevedo, there were 15
participants in the workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring
items from their own personal collections if they have any specific
questions. Museum Education Coordinator Substitute Dr.
Katherine Hobbs was also in attendance to assist Curator
Acevedo. The next Preservation Workshop will be on March 2
highlighting photographs.
The Museum will be participating in Earth Week in collaboration with the Arcadia Public Library
and Arcadia Public Works. The Museum will kick off the event with a screening of Saging The
World on April 13 followed by a panel discussion with Director Ms. Rose Ramirez. On April 20,
the Museum will provide a bird feeder kit and decorate a terracotta pot kit for the community at
the Earth Week event at the Arcadia Public Library. In addition, Saging the World will be played
in the auditorium during the plant swap at the event.
Museum Education Coordinator, Daniel Estrada,
has conducted 30 out of the 42 school programs
scheduled for this school year. This year the
Museum will have reached all elementary schools
within Arcadia Unified School District. Substitute
Education Coordinator, Ms. Victoria Jacques, has
shadowed Mr. Estrada on two occasions and
began facilitating programs on her own. Mr. Franco
from Camino Grove Elementary has the petroglyph
activity from a previous program displayed in his
classroom.
MARKETING
The February scavenger hunt at the Museum is themed after Black History month and includes
figures that hold space in Arcadia’s history. These individuals include Mr. Isaac Burns Murphy
who was a famous Jockey for Lucky Baldwin, Ms. Denise Veret who is the current Director of the
Los Angeles Zoo, Mr. John and Mr. Julian Fisher who produced horseshoes for racehorses, Mr.
Andre Beltre who was a Major League Baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mr. Paul
Revere Williams who was a famous architect, and Mr. Joe Gans who was a famous boxer.

The Museum continues to promote upcoming events and educational kits across all social media
platforms. New volunteer Ms. Amy Alcan from Pomona College will be volunteering at the
Museum with social media by creating content, working on the museum's digital newsletter on
MailChimp, and creating the seasonal calendar booklet for the summer and fall.
VOLUNTEERS
At this time, adult volunteer applications have closed until the fall. Teens will still be available to
apply to volunteer, especially for the summer.
Two adult volunteers, Ms. Xiaodie Huang and Ms. Wendy Xiang, translate the Museum’s
promotional flyers into Mandarin. They have begun translating exhibition panels, school program
worksheets, and educational kits to make the Museum further accessible to community members.
Volunteers are beginning production on March’s Earth Day kits, in which 250 kits will be given out
to the community. The Bird Feeder Activity kit and Terracotta Pot decoration kit will each have
approximately 120 in production to give out at the Earth Week event at the Arcadia Public Library
on April 20.

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2024
CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Marilyn Daleo called the meeting to order at 5:02 pm in the
Museum Education Center.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Marilyn Daleo
ROLL CALL: Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, Chairpersons Ginny Blitz, Janalee Shimmin, Angela
Yang-Ayala, Director of Library and Museum Services Darlene Bradley , Museum
Curator Stevy Acevedo, and Museum Education Coordinator Daniel Estrada.
Chairperson Blitz motioned to excuse Billie Tone due to health reasons. Chairperson Angela
seconded – the motion carried. Marilyn Daleo motioned to excuse Janalee Shimmin’s absence;
Chairperson Ginny seconded – the motion carried unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS :
Ginny Blitz was invited to the Museum’s Genealogy Workshop and expressed, with great praise,
how wonderful the program was. Chairperson Ginny informed the committee about the ongoing
fundraisers hosted by the Friends of the Museum. Two-hundred and forty seven dollars have
been raised thus far. Marilyn Daleo wished everyone a Happy New Year and informed everyone
about the upcoming Friends of the Museum meeting in February.
REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR
Director Bradley shared a documentary regarding museum education titled “Crafts in America”
produced by PBS. A job offer was sent for the Principal Librarian position. Director Bradley also
sat in on the interview board for a neighboring city . The position for Substitute Education
Coordinator is continuously recruiting. Darlene Bradley is also working on new collections and
orders at the Library.
REPORT FROM THE CURATOR
Curator Acevedo informed the Board on the Museum’s interns’ continuous work on collection s;
Mr. Ornelas has moved onto the inventory of Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association
Collection, Ms. Barrios is now working on the Mary Hansen Collection, and Mr. Ostrowsky
continues to work on the Silverstein Collection. Interns Ms. Summers-Garcia and Mr. Fernandez
completed their internship with works that include the Santa Anita Park exhibit at the Library and
the curation of the American Legion Post 247 Collection, respectively. Staff recruited Mr. Andrew
Bermudez as a Collections intern. Ms. Acevedo is continuously collecting red envelopes for the
Lunar New Year exhibit. Ms. Acevedo informed the Board that Ms. Rebecca Andersen is working
on the exhibit list for 2024. Curator Acevedo completed work on the Capital Improvement Project
for the Walk of Champions on Huntington Drive – Silverlake Conservation completed the project
before the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita Park in November 2023. Ms. Acevedo and Mr. Estrada
gave a tour to the Japanese American National Museum on December 14. Staff is currently
scheduling speakers for upcoming documentary screenings: Saging the World and Norman
Mineta and His Legacy: An American Story . Staff is currently in collaboration with First Avenue
Middle School teacher, Ms. Karalee Nakatsuka to speak about the Assembly Center and relate it
to the 14th Amendment.
REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR
Mr. Estrada completed his National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpreter Guide
certification. Intern Ms. Corinna Yang completed her Fall 2023 internship and helped conclude
the Fall Preschool Program on November 2, 2023. The Museum is currently recruiting for a Winter
Public Engagement and Education intern. This year’s Make Your Own Snow Globe Day provided
456 snow globes for the community. The Museum Education Center welcomed over 660 guests
and over 200 residents participated in the scavenger hunt at the Museum. Two-hundred Birds of
Arcadia Kits were given out to the community during the event. The Lunar New Year Kit will be
available on January 9, 2024. The Museum Education Coordinator has conducted 21 out of the
43 school programs scheduled for the 2023-2024 school year. Mr. Estrada conducted the
Genealogy Workshop on December 16 with 27 participants – the community was very grateful for
this program. From November 1 – December 18 volunteers clocked in over 448 hours.
