3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Health Seminar Discussion
On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the Health Committee met for their regularly scheduled
meeting, the last regular meeting was on June 27, 2023, September’s meeting was canceled.
The following guests attended: Desiree Molina, Chia-Chieh Hu, Cliff Daniels, Diane Daniels,
Kenneth Wogensen, Dino Clarizio, David Ratto, Brian Green, Michael Cao, Eileen Wang, Tom
Devlin, and Sara Somogyi.
Mayor Pro Tem Cao and Council Member Wang talked about the upcoming first lecture of the
Health Committee scheduled to be held on January 24, 2024. Mayor Pro Tem Cao said he has
confirmed a speaker, Dr. Patrick Hsieh M.D., Director of Neurosurgery Spine Program at USC
Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Hsieh will speak on concussions and brain injuries at the first
seminar scheduled at 6 pm, at the Arcadia Public Library. Mayor Pro Tem Cao and Council
Member Wang talked about where future health seminars should be held. Both agreed the
Museum Education Center (MEC), the Arcadia Public Library, or the Arcadia Community Center
would be great locations with plenty of parking spaces. Sara Somogyi responded she would have
to check the availably of the MEC and talk to Library Director, Darlene Bradley on the availability
of the Arcadia Library’s auditorium. Sara Somogyi said the Arcadia Community Center may not
be an option as there are afternoon and night classes scheduled throughout the week.
Mayor Pro Tem Cao and Council Member Wang discussed how to promote and advertise for the
Health Committee seminars. Some options discussed were social media, Arcadia’s Hot Sheet,
the Monthly Connection Newsletter, or placing inserts in monthly water bills. Sara Somogyi
responded there is no budget allocated for the Health Committee, therefore, it will be a challenge
if they want to include inserts, or any other places where a fee is applied. Sara Somogyi reminded
the Committee that there is also a need to plan ahead in order to promote or advertise because
the information will have to be turned in up to one month in advance, such as the Connection
Newsletter and the Arcadia’s Hot Sheet. Mayor Pro Tem Cao, Council Member Wang, and Sara
Somogyi discussed the layout for future flyers. It was agreed to keep the layout the same and just
change the title of the seminar and add the speaker’s information with the speakers photo.
Mayor Pro Tem Cao gave a tentative overview of what has to be planned for the next three months
of seminars. January will be a discussion on concussions and brain injuries which has been
confirmed. February will be on heart disease, and March will be on obesity. Lastly, Mayor Pro
Tem Cao and Council Member Wang said they would like to have the Health Fair sometime in
July 2024. Sara Somogyi said she would look into available dates at the Community Center.
