HomeMy WebLinkAboutAM Minutes: 01/03/2024MUSEUM COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2024 CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Marilyn Daleo called the meeting to order at 5:02 pm in the Museum Education Center. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Marilyn Daleo ROLL CALL: Chairperson Marilyn Daleo, Commissioners Ginny Blitz, Janalee Shimmin, Angela Yang -Ayala, Director of Library and Museum Services Darlene Bradley, Museum Curator Stevy Acevedo, and Museum Education Coordinator Daniel Estrada. Chairperson Blitz motioned to excuse Billie Tone due to health reasons. Chairperson Angela seconded — the motion carried. Marilyn Daleo motioned to excuse Janalee Shimmin's absence; Chairperson Ginny seconded — the motion carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS / LIAISONS: Ginny Blitz was invited to the Museum's Genealogy Workshop and expressed, with great praise, how wonderful the program was. Chairperson Ginny informed the committee about the ongoing fundraisers hosted by the Friends of the Museum. Two -hundred and forty seven dollars have been raised thus far. Marilyn Daleo wished everyone a Happy New Year and informed everyone about the upcoming Friends of the Museum meeting in February. REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR Director Bradley shared a documentary regarding museum education titled "Crafts in America" produced by PBS. A job offer was sent for the Principal Librarian position. Director Bradley also sat in on the interview board for a neighboring city. The position for Substitute Education Coordinator is continuously recruiting. Darlene Bradley is also working on new collections and orders at the Library. REPORT FROM THE CURATOR Curator Acevedo informed the Board on the Museum's interns' continuous work on collections; Mr. Ornelas has moved onto the inventory of Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association Collection, Ms. Barrios is now working on the Mary Hansen Collection, and Mr. Ostrowsky continues to work on the Silverstein Collection. Interns Ms. Summers -Garcia and Mr. Fernandez completed their internship with works that include the Santa Anita Park exhibit at the Library and the curation of the American Legion Post 247 Collection, respectively. Staff recruited Mr. Andrew Bermudez as a Collections intern. Ms. Acevedo is continuously collecting red envelopes for the Lunar New Year exhibit. Ms. Acevedo informed the Board that Ms. Rebecca Andersen is working on the exhibit list for 2024. Curator Acevedo completed work on the Capital Improvement Project for the Walk of Champions on Huntington Drive — Silverlake Conservation completed the project before the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita Park in November 2023. Ms. Acevedo and Mr. Estrada gave a tour to the Japanese American National Museum on December 14. Staff is currently scheduling speakers for upcoming documentary screenings: Saging the World and Norman Mineta and His Legacy: An American Story. Staff is currently in collaboration with First Avenue Middle School teacher, Ms. Karalee Nakatsuka to speak about the Assembly Center and relate it to the 1411 Amendment. REPORT FROM THE MUSEUM EDUCATION CORDINATOR Mr. Estrada completed his National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpreter Guide certification. Intern Ms. Corinna Yang completed her Fall 2023 internship and helped conclude the Fall Preschool Program on November 2, 2023. The Museum is currently recruiting for a Winter Public Engagement and Education intern. This year's Make Your Own Snow Globe Day provided 456 snow globes for the community. The Museum Education Center welcomed over 660 guests and over 200 residents participated in the scavenger hunt at the Museum. Two -hundred Birds of Arcadia Kits were given out to the community during the event. The Lunar New Year Kit will be available on January 9, 2024. The Museum Education Coordinator has conducted 21 out of the 43 school programs scheduled for the 2023-2024 school year. Mr. Estrada conducted the Genealogy Workshop on December 16 with 27 participants —the community was very grateful for this program. From November 1 — December 18 volunteers clocked in over 448 hours. Consent Calendar a. Approve the Regular Meetino Minutes of November 1. 2023. at 5:00 o.m. in the Museum Education Center at 382 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Recommended action: Approve. Chairperson Marilyn Daleo moved to approve Consent Calendar Item "a', which was seconded by Chairperson Angela, and carried on a voice vote. AYES: Chair Daleo, Commissioners Blitz, Shimmin, Yang -Ayala NOES: None Adjournment Chairperson Marilyn Daleo adjourned this meeting at 6:00 p.m. to Wednesday, March 6, 2024 in the Museum Education Center.
