ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – FEBRUARY 2024
Highlights: The Library was an eleven-day voting center, beginning February 21, 2024 with
equipment delivered and on-site training provided for the election workers. The election site
opened for the public on Saturday February 24 through March 5, including Saturday and Sunday
evenings. Account Services Technicians have taken turns learning how to be the point person
throughout the day for the election staff and arming the building after hours. With the Library
Auditorium being a voting center, it vastly reduces the number of rentals for the community as
well as in-house programming, including Teen Zone so the rental numbers are down as well as
Teen Zone days.
Fun Fact: The busiest day of the week was February 7 with 1,279 visitors. There were 23,884
items checked in for the month, with 205 items shelved per shift (approximately 1.1 item per
minute per a three-hour shift).
Adult Programs, Classes, Technology Literacy, and Events:
English Conversation Classes on Monday mornings continue to bring in new students. With the
capable volunteers leading this program, retiree Pat Smith, Carol, and Bob, the pronunciation
drills, Find the Word and Easy English News, this program is very much appreciated by the
students. Inheriting Guquin performance by the North American Guquin Association, featured six
songs and the last performance was accompanied by a live painting, drawing in 54 attendees.

Bookish book discussion featured Tremors in the Blood and had two new attendees. Smart
Squad continues to support the library’s digital literacy goals by providing technology assistance
to 10 drop-in patrons with technology-related devices. Book Lover’s Craft honored of Library
Lover’s Month! Patrons made heart-shaped bookmarks and tulips out of origami paper while
listening to relaxing music! One patron stated, “This really made my day,” as she completed her
bookmark. CraftABLE’s February program made a bookworm bookmark in honor of Love Your
Library month, and Adult and Teen Services hosted a Blind Date with a Book passive program
in which patrons could choose a book wrapped with clues on the outside, not knowing what was
inside. There were 14 participants, checking out almost all of the Blind Date books within the
first week.
Teen Programing:
Despite the short month, teens steadily made use of the
Teen Zone space to work on science and art projects, play
giant Jenga, and meet up with friends after school.
Volunteers reported that Teen Zone is oftentimes quiet
and a good place to study, while other teen groups have
used the space to play tabletop games like Dungeons and
Dragons. There were 208 in attendance. On February 14,
the Teen Valentine Film program was a great success due
to the awesome TAG (Teen Advisory Group) volunteers
who promoted the event in their respective school clubs. A
number of fresh faces, exchange students, and Studio
Ghibli fans, attended the library auditorium to watch
“Howl’s Moving Castle,” as an afterschool treat for
Valentine’s Day. Volunteers popped and distributed
popcorn and attendees had a lot of fun revisiting a beloved film with 56 attendees. In
preparation for Summer Reading Activities, Teen Graphic Design Club members worked on the
library iPad tablets to create designs for stickers and buttons on Procreate during Teen Zone
shifts. One TAG member especially enjoyed learning how to graphic design on Canva. Another
teen learned how to use the Cricut machine to die-cut. (4).
Children’s Programming:
Seedlings (for ages 4 to 23 months), 129; Sprouts (for ages 24 to 47 months), 174; and Blooms
(for ages 4 to 7 years) 103 were very well attended. In addition, the Bilingual Mandarin English
Storytime continues to be popular with 26 in attendance. These 11 early literacy programs offered
232 children and their families demonstrated important skill sets to formulate a strong foundation
for future readers with the love of reading and age appropriate books.
3
In celebration of Lunar New Year and Year of the Dragon, 130 children completed a
Chinese Zodiac scavenger hunt and earned a dragon figurine for their efforts. The Library
partnered with the Music Center for a presentation by Melody of China, a group of
professional musicians from San Francisco. The trio presented traditional instruments
and music from China with 42 in attendance. Children’s Services partnered with Viola
Peng, a community artist, to host a Dragon Story Art Workshop. Ms. Peng presented
information to the 38 attendees about eastern and western dragons and demonstrated
how to fold and make a dragon accordion book.
The City’s Police and Fire Departments took part in the Library’s annual Read Across
America event. Firefighters and Officers read stories, shared about their work, and
provided the opportunity for the 123 program attendees to tour their safety vehicles.
A
discovery kit was created for the 248 community participants in celebration of Black
History Month. The kit highlighted the accomplishments of African American explorer
Matthew Henson and included biographical information, a recommended reading list,
activity sheet, and igloo themed craft.
California Highway Patrol Officers Elliott and Bay-Ramon provided a workshop about
eBikes. They discussed what constitutes an eBikes and presented information about
current state and local eBike legislation.
4
Sixth-grade student, Aaron Chiu, kicked-off a monthly “Conquer the Cube Club” in which
14 attendees tested their time in solving a cube, participated in preparing a dragon-
themed cube mosaic, and oriented themselves to cubes of different shapes, sizes, and
styles.
A storytime themed “Year of the Dragon” was
attended by 48 children and families. There
were ten additional early literacy programs
with 432 in attendance. The Blooms
Storytime programs focused on cooking and
introduced differing meals as well as to craft
their own cookbooks.
Fifty-two Holly Avenue kindergarteners
visited the Library as other class visits were
cancelled or rescheduled due to rain this
month.
Two Middle School Advisory Group (MAG)
meetings were held to plan and prepare for a
Jeopardy-themed event with 19 middle schoolers
in attendance. There were also two Game Day
Unplugged events in which 47 middle school
students gathered to play board and card games
and socialize with one another. And the First
Friday Film showing provided the opportunity for
students to snack and view “Sonic the Hedgehog
2”. Some of these events are in coordination with
minimum days when the students get out early,
providing additional activities to fill their afternoons at the Library.
Collections: Much needed work has been done to update collections, including the adult fiction
print collection, the standing order collection, as well as the NoLo Press collection. In addition,
work was completed on OverDrive, updating holds lists. There were 4905 OverDrive checkouts,
of which 1,579 were eAudio and 2,178 were eBooks. There were 1,148 magazine checkouts of
which 167 were in Chinese and 28 were Spanish. Hoopla had 87 checkouts and Kanopy had 610
checkouts. Hoopla includes music, movies, TV shows, and comics. Kanopy has more
documentaries and Criterion movies. There were 1,320 Mango language sessions, assisting
patrons with learning a new language. The most popular was Spanish. This work was done by
the Cataloging and Acquisitions team in the absence of a Principal Librarian for Adult and Teen
Services.
Facilities and Technology: There were 4,217 unique Wi-Fi users and a total of 4.4TB of data
downloaded and/or uploaded this month. There were 5,406 visits to the Library Catalog. There
were 367 computer/technical questions answered by the Computer Aides and they also assisted
the public with 909 public computer sessions, 899 print jobs, public copiers, and public Wi-Fi.
There were 16 3D print jobs on the new 3D printer.
5
Staffing/Training: The Aide recruitment closed and the list is exhausted. Two new Aides have
started in Children’s Services, learning the collections and shelving. With the most current
rotation, one Aide has rotated into Account Services to assist with the desk. The second Aide that
would have rotated as well has given his notice so he can work with his dad. The existing Aides
continue to take on extra hours to help out with printing and computer help, sorting, shelving and
assisting at the front desk. There are five Aide vacancies. One Aide promoted to a part-time
Technician in January and one Aide is on leave. The Principal Librarian for Adult and Teen
Services position is still open. Petra Morris continues as the Acting Library Services Manager.
Part-time Librarian I recruitment is underway with applications reviewed.
Library Service for All: Current Trends in Library Programs and Services for Autistic Children and
Teens, Graphic Novels and Manga for Teens and Tweens, Worker’s Compensation 101, citywide
new employee orientation.
Marketing and Publicity: Adult and Teen Services created the following displays in February:
Chinese Romance, Black History Month, Blind Date with a Book, National Embroidery Month,
Reading About Dragons. Children's Services book displays included Pi Day, Ramadan, Simple
Machines, Weird But True, and Fashion. Social media included 1,683 Facebook followers; 671
Twitter (“X”) followers; 1,685 Instagram followers, and 215 YouTube subscribers.
Community Outreach/Engagement

LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
THURSDAY, February 15, 2024
CALL TO ORDER – Chair Renfrew called the meeting to order at 4:31 p.m. in the Library’s
Conference Room.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Trustee Carter
ROLL CALL: Chair Elizabeth Renfrew; Trustees Pardha Akalamkam, Miriam Carter, Carlton
Seaver; Mayor Pro-Tempore Michael Cao (City Council Liaison); Library Services
Managers Samantha Alba, Petra Morris
ABSENT – Trustee Connie Liao and Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley
PUBLIC COMMENTS – None
REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS: Trustee Seaver expressed that he was
impressed with all that the Library is doing. Chair Renfrew shared that she attended the Library’s
Investment Fraud program and found the information interesting. She also attended the eBike
Safety Workshop and was disappointed by the low attendance as she felt it is very important for
students to know about the information. Chair Renfrew encouraged the Trustees to complete and
submit their 700 forms by April 1. She advised that everyone read through the requirements and
remember to use the Library’s address. Chair Renfrew shared a cookbook craft made by children
who attended the Blooms Storytime program. She also shared that as the Library will be a voting
center, the Friends of the Library will host an outdoor pop-up book sale on March 1 and 2. The
Friends of the Library Bookstore will also be extending its hours and stay open until 7:00 p.m. to
coincide with the voting center hours. There will also be a Friends of the Library book sale on
March 15 and 16. Trustee Akalamkam mentioned that Monrovia Public Library is providing
information about the primary election and inquired if Arcadia Public Library will also offer this
kind of program.
Mayor Pro-Tempore Cao shared that he is involved with the League of California Cities which
meets monthly to talk about Assembly Bills, Propositions, etc. He offered to see if the League
might be able to provide election information for the Library or City, possibly for November. At the
local level, the Arcadia Chinese Association provided a candidate forum for the City Council
elections.
REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items
Director’s Update: Director Bradley is attending a work retreat hosted by the City Manager.
Library Services Manager Alba conducted the meeting in her absence. Library Services
Manager Alba announced that there was a mid-year budget review and spending is on track.
The financial books will open soon so that staff can input information for the new Fiscal Year.
There will be a State of the City event with the Mayor on June 13 with appetizers. A location
has not yet been set. Mayor Pro-Tempore Cao shared that over 100 people attended the City’s
first health seminar about brain concussions with Dr. Patrick Hsieh. The event was very
successful with over 100 attendees. There will be a second program offered on February 28 at
6:00 p.m. at the Museum Education Center. Dr. Ray Matthews will present about heart disease.
He encouraged all to attend the event. Trustee Akalamkam inquired if it was possible to donate
cookies for the health seminar. Mator Pro-Tempore Cao said that the donation should be okay,
but he needed to check in with the City Manager to make sure.
Monthly Statistical Report: January 2024: Library Services Manager Alba mentioned that
circulation was slightly down, but digital collection use was slightly higher and likely attributed to
the weather and people staying home. Library card registration was up as well as holds requests.
Trustee Seaver inquired who determines what to purchase for the Library’s collections. Library
Services Manager Alba explained that Library staff selects materials using specific collection
criteria and the Library’s collection development policy. Library Services Manager Alba said that
the number of materials being discarded was also down due to low staffing levels. Former
Principal Librarian Kathy Meacham has been contracted to assist with cataloguing materials as
the current Principal Librarian Margaret Lindstrom assists with ordering materials. Trustee Seaver
inquired how books are discarded and Library Services Manager Alba explained that staff adhere
to a discard policy when discarding materials. Library Services Manager Alba explained that the
gray shaded area for adult programming was used to reflect past combined online and in-person
programming. Participation numbers for teen programming and Teen Zone were also separated.
There was a $1000 donation from a past Library Board member. Passport Services funds were
up due to having two Clerks in place. Conversations and questions ensued regarding overdue
fines and renewals.
Monthly Narrative Report: January 2024: Library Services Manager Alba explained that staff
has had to deal with patrons not abiding by the Library’s Code of Conduct. In one incident, a
patron was aggressive towards staff. The person was given the opportunity to change behavior
but did not and was subsequently asked not to return to the Library for two weeks. Staff have
been addressing patron issues weekly. Trustee Akalamkam asked for clarification about Passport
earnings as the amount has doubled. Library Services Manager Alba explained that the amount
reflected includes revenue from photos. Library Services Manager Alba shared that the teen
librarian recently retrained the Teen Advisory Group on matters relating to safety issues and
staffing Teen Zone. There was a soft roll out of the Library’s new 3D printer. Prints are offered
for free, and patrons may request one print per month. Trustee Seaver inquired about 3D prints
and suggested that the Library Board take a trip to see the printer. Library Services Manager
Alba said that she would arrange a trip for the Board members to do so.
Financial Report: January 2024: Trustee Seaver commented that the Financial Report is
unhelpful. He questioned how one uses the document to compare what was done before and
how the Report needs to provide disclosure. Trustee Akalamkam inquired if there was anything

visited Glendale Public Library. Trusteed Akalamkam suggested that the selected Library should
be comparable in size to Arcadia Public Library and that Monrovia Public Library might be good
to visit. Trustee Carter mentioned that she saw a photo of the Huntington Beach Public Library
and added that it would be interesting to see what the Library’s Friends Group does and what
innovative projects they are working on. Library Services Manager Alba recommended Irwindale
