ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – MARCH 2024
Highlights: There were recent issues that impacted the facility as well as a building upgrade. A
power outage caused damage to the server switch and impacted the building gate count.
Information Systems Services worked with the City’s IT department to replace the damaged
server. Two aging battery back-ups were also installed to insure consistent power. Public Works
installed a new chiller in the Library to help regulate the temperature throughout the building.
Adult Programs, Classes, and Technology Literacy: Adult and Teen Services offered a joint
Herstory Zines program, in honor of National Women’s History Month. Ten patrons attended the
program and made mini zines or self-published and locally produced “books”.
Five CraftABLE kits were distributed and included materials to draw a self-portrait, in honor of
National Intellectual and Cognitive Disabilities Awareness Month.
Bookish, the monthly book discussion group, gathered and discussed If I Had Your Face by
Frances Cha, a fiction book about four women in Seoul, South Korea and the societal pressures
they face. Smart Squad continued to support the Library’s digital literacy goals, providing 16
people with technological support throughout the month. The International Film Program showed
Free and Easy, a Chinese language movie about a middle-aged salesman who walks around
selling his magical soap to a few passers-by, but smelling his unusual wares costs them more
than they bargained for.
The English Conversation Classes continued to pick up momentum with 67 participants taking
part in the four classes this month. The program offers students the opportunity to hone their
conversational skills while doing pronunciation drills, reading, and discussing articles from the
monthly Easy English News, and discussing life experiences.
Teen Programing: Teen Zone returned to the Library’s Auditorium and board games as well as
craft supplies were set out for students to enjoy. 181 teens visited Teen Zone throughout the
month. A new volunteer began her Teen Zone shifts and expressed
that she enjoyed studying in the space.
Teen Graphic Design club members borrowed Library iPads and
created stickers for the upcoming summer reading program. Teen
Advisory Group (TAG) volunteers also made buttons from teen-
created designs.
Five members attended the monthly TAG meeting and discussed
upcoming breaks as well as the bi-annual De-Stress Fest.

applications. Following the April 6 submission deadline, volunteer
candidates will be invited for interviews in late April. The annual
Bookmark Contest kicked-off this month and invited kids, teens,
AND adults to submit artistic entries reflecting the theme “Read in
Full Bloom”. Throughout the month 56 entries were submitted. The contest will end April 13.
251 kids registered for the 10 to Try Spring Reading Program which encourages participants to
read and log up to ten books from ten different categories/genres to earn reading rewards. The
program ends April 27.
The Children’s librarian hosted a Middle School Advisory Group (MAG) meeting and fielded
suggestions for grand prizes for the youth summer reading program as well as ideas for the final
MAG program of the school year.

and provided 14 kids, ages 8 to 11 years, with an ecological presentation as well as the
opportunity to build a take-home terrarium. Children’s staff also hosted a Spyology program, in
which 23 kids visited three different stations to do spy inspired activities. Student, Aaron Chu
hosted a Conquer the Cube Club in which 24 cubing enthusiasts attended and socialized, timed
their cube-solving abilities, and assisted with a cube mosaic project. The event was overseen by
Library Aide, Esmerelda Albarran.
Middle school students from Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral visited the Library and learned
about various resources to assist with their country and hobby research projects. 113 Holly
Avenue Elementary School first grade students as well as 55 transitional kindergarten students
also visited and staff provided presentations about birds and bunnies.
Collections: Cataloguing and Acquisition Services staff continued to work on an Authority
Database project which maintains their databases and the online catalog and keeps them up-to-
date, consistent, and error-free. Staff are also working on a special project to weed and re-catalog
“The Idiot’s Guide” and “For Dummies” series in the adult non-fiction collection.

Systems Services team answered more than 431 computer/technical questions from patrons;
assisted the public with 1,074 public computer sessions, 1,007 print jobs, public copiers, and the
public Wi-Fi network. Nine 3-D print requests were fulfilled during the month.
Staffing and Training: Retired Principal Librarian, Kathy Meacham, returned to Cataloguing and
Acquisition Services as an annuitant cataloguer and is currently cataloguing the Gilb Museum
and adult book collections. This has provided Principal Librarian Margaret Lindstrom time to work
on much needed weeding in the Adult collections, including the fiction collection where the
shelves are getting very tight and the test preparation collection.. This also provided her time to
review, in-depth, the standing order collection and update items no longer being published.
The Shelving and Information System Services Aides continued working additional hours to assist
election staff stationed in the Library’s Auditorium. The Aides also continued acclimating
themselves to their assigned rotations and work areas. Library Aide Edgar Perez’s last day with
the Library was March 1.
Interviews for a part-time Children’s Services Librarian I position took place and a conditional offer
was extended to a candidate.

packets and giveaways at the Arcadia Christian School Open House. In a thank you email from
the Coordinator of the Barnhart School event, she wrote, “I can’t wait for our students to pick up
more books this summer and am grateful for the list you provided me. I hope to connect with you
more about future events, etc. We hope to see you soon. You’re always welcome back on our
campus.”
Volunteers: Students from the Transition Partnership Program (TPP) and Workability programs

PONY EXPRESS MUSEUM CHINESE JOSS HOUSE
The Pony Express Museum (1935-1955) at Huntington Drive and Colorado Place was home to
an impressive collection of old west relics, curated by William Parker Lyon. Mr. Lyon
recognized the important role of Chinese immigrant workers during California’s gold rush days
with this display of a Chinese joss house. The joss house represented the hub of Chinese
society in towns throughout the California Mother Lode during the mid-1800s and later. The
joss house would be the first cultural structure built in the Chinese settlements, serving as a
place for worship, classes, social events, and letter-writing services.

Director’s Update: Director Bradley announced that “Serving with a Purpose” will be coming in

Director Bradley shared that the Library is in budget preparations for Fiscal Year 2024-2025.
Trustee Carter inquired if funds can be allocated for the English Conversation Classes for the
purchase of supplies. Director Bradley explained that $1800 is provided for the purchase of the
class newspaper.
Monthly Statistical Report: February 2024: Director Bradley acknowledged that the gate count
was up, but the count does not take into account the volume of people entering the Auditorium to
vote or other events such as Teen Zone. The eBook collection was infused with newer titles.
Hoopla usage is now reflected in statistical report. The amount of holds is up and the staff in
Cataloguing is working to discard weeded materials. Reference questions has increased for Adult
and Childrens Services. Trustee Akalamkam inquired if website use is going down and Director
Bradley explained that website usage continues but only visits to the Library’s homepage are
counted and not subpages. There are currently two Passport Clerks in the Office and this has
helped with revenue.
Monthly Narrative Report: February 2024: Director Bradley shared that attendance for a couple
of programs in February were impacted by a track meet at the Arcadia High School. Director
Bradley stated that she will coordinate with the school’s Activity Coordinator for future meets so
that they do not impact parking for Library programs. Trustee Akalamkam inquired about the
eBike program and Director Bradley shared that the Library offered an eBike program this past
month but turnout was not as good as hoped. There will be another eBike program offered at the
Library in May.
Financial Report: February 2024: Director Bradley shared that credit card expenses have not
been posted since August in Pentamation so some expenditures are not reflected in the financial
report. The City will move to Oracle, a new financial management system, in July 2024.
Staff Update: Interviews for the Children’s Librarian I position will take place on Friday, March
22. Applications for the Principal Librarian position are still being accepted. The Library has five

will be done after the other Library recruitments are done. Director Bradley shared that she took
part in a recent recruitment for Azusa Public Library where there were good candidates.
Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Director Bradley shared that the Gilb Museum will be
recruiting for a Museum Education coordinator. There is currently a Red Envelope exhibit and
the Museum is hosting more than thirty preschool programs which are well attended. As part of
the budget process, Director Bradley will be asking for a Veteran’s exhibit case to display not only
uniforms but also regalia. Trustee Akalamkam inquired more about the Museum and Director
Bradley shared that it is managed by the Museum Curator who sets up exhibits, works with the
Getty Institute, oversees about 50 teen and adult volunteers, among other responsibilities. The
Museum Education Coordinator hosts class visits as well as programming to share about local
history.
