1.PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON)
Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes
per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior
Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the
posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or
action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

April 4, 2024
SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER –Chairperson Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Charlene Martinez, Donna Salter, Nilo Salazar, Joyce Platt,
and Margaret Swope
EXCUSED: Kathryn Penny and Steve Sherman
A motion was made by Commissioner Platt seconded by Commissioner Bolster and unanimously
carried to excuse Commissioners Penny and Sherman.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Bolster said he is interested to see how the rain and floods have damaged
Wilderness Park and what the park looks like. Commissioner Bolster as a resident of the City of
Arcadia requested a tour of Wilderness Park. Deputy Director of Recreation and Community
Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung said she would ask if this is possible.
Vice-Chairperson Swope reported the Friendship Club celebrated Easter, which included candy
and goodies, and a bonnet contest for the prettiest bonnet. Vice-Chairperson Swope reported
they have a new member and club members continue to meet each week on Wednesdays at
11am. The Senior Friendship Club offers plenty to do, such as bingo, regular weekly meetings,
holidays celebrations, birthday celebrations, and more. The Friendship Club is always looking for
new members.
Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers Club is doing well and provided an update on
upcoming trips. On May 9, a trip with Curt Tucker Tours will take place where participants will visit
the Bellflower Fire Museum, Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey, the oldest McDonald’s,
Randy’s Donut Shop, and lastly followed by lunch at Marino’s Italian Restaurant. On June 6, the
Travelers Club will take a trip to the Bob Baker Marionette Theater followed by lunch at the Smoke
House. On June 27, the Travelers Club members will enjoy a tour of SoFi Stadium. Commissioner
Platt reported the guest speaker at the next general meeting on April 26 is Laurie Lincoln from
Main Street Tours. The Arcadia Travelers Club is a proud member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Their office is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 10am and annual membership is $10.
Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box is currently closed for spring cleaning. The
Bargain Box will re-open on Wednesday, April 10, and Saturday, April 13, from 10am to 1pm, with
a yard sale of jeans and winter clothes. Commissioner Martinez reported the Assistance League’s
Links to Learning Program will donate 200 books to the City of Duarte schools and 440 books to
second graders at Garvey School. Sometimes this is the first book a child will receive that they
can keep. The Bargain Box will sometimes have a section with free books to take home.
Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members are doing well and are always
looking for new ideas to bring to the Club. Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club
members meet every week on Thursday, and they now recite the pledge of allegiance at each
meeting. Chairperson Salazar reported each week Club members enjoy a form of exercise, bingo,
weekly meetings, and more. Chairperson Salazar said he makes sure to inform Club members
on all City education seminars, programs, and events held at the Arcadia Community Center.

1. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Gina Hernandez (RS)
Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reported on
behalf of Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez, on the following programs: The Fit & Talk
program meets on Thursday’s at 10am. Each week there is a new 30-minute workout planned for
individuals who are 50 years or older to enjoy such as Zumba, seated workouts, dance, and once
per month meet for a leisurely walk to a nearby location in Arcadia. The Monday Dance program
is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of the month and it is one of the popular programs where
adults enjoy a live band, ballroom dancing, socializing, and meeting new people. On March 1, the
Afternoon of Music event took place with 64 attendees. The event included lunch, dessert, a live
Jazz band, a photo booth, and dancing. On March 22, the first Senior Social Hour program took
place with nine participants. The purpose of this program is for lonely or single older adults to
make friends, socialize, and meet. The next event will be held on June 28. The Information and
Referral Program is available for individuals who need assistance finding important information
or resources.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD)
DDRCS Cheung reported on behalf of Director of Recreation and Community Services Sara
Somogyi. DDRCS Cheung reported the Santa Anita Derby Day will take place on Saturday, April
6. DDRCS Cheung handed out copies of the next series of the City-Wide Health Education Series.
The next seminar will be April 24, at 6pm on Treating Developmental Delays. On May 22, at 6pm,
the seminar will be on Adolescent Mental Health, and on June 26, the seminar will be on
symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment on Hyperplasia.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salazar adjourned the meeting at 4:35pm to May 2, 2024, at 4:00pm in the
Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.

SUBJECT: Senior Services, Programs and Activities for April 2024
Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude
of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE
Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from
7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends. 371
Blood Pressure
Check
Free blood pressure check is available the second Tuesday of
each month from 10-11am in the Community Center. 10
Bridge
Bridge is available Wednesdays from 10am-1pm. Card games
can help improve memory and cognition, it also enhances motor
skills and promotes socialization.

Chess Club
Chess is available every Thursday from 9:30-11:30am. The
game of chess can help increase creativity and problem-solving
skills and improve concentration and reading skills.

Classes
Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone
density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and
can reduce stress. Some of the classes offered are line dance,
cardio plus, and Zumba.

the Mayor
On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors listen and chat with
the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 35
Fit & Talk
On Thursdays, Fit & Talk meets for a fun and easy workout and
once per month for a leisurely walk around different areas of
Arcadia.

Shop
The gift shop provides a venue for senior crafters to sell their
creations and allows the community to purchase one-of-a-kind
items at a great price.

The I&R program assists seniors and their families with issues
that affect their quality of life by providing information and referral
that address their concerns.

Lions
Sight
The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the
Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free
vision care. Prospective clients are screened to make the
necessary arrangements for their free service.

Legal
Assistance
The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization
is available once a month at the Community Center to provide
seniors with legal insight.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin played by four people with
144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a
winning hand. Mahjong meets on Tuesdays from 1-4pm for
American Mahjong and Fridays at 12:30pm for traditional
Chinese Mahjong. Every second Friday of the month, the Mayor
plays Mahjong with the seniors.

Monday
Dance
Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each
month. This program provides a good element for participants
and has a good ratio of male and female dancers.

Bus Pass
Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and
can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 20
Notary Services
Notary services are limited to three signatures or thirty minutes
per appointment. Available the second and fourth Tuesday of
each month.

Senior Meals
Program
A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday. For many seniors,
this is the only hot meal they have daily.

Tennis
Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8am-4pm.
Equipment is available at the front desk for seniors to play and
meet new friends.

Taste the Town
Each month participants meet at a different restaurant to have
lunch and socialize. In April, participants had lunch at Cabrera’s
Mexican Cuisine restaurant in Arcadia.

Senior Tax
Program
On Thursdays and Fridays, AARP Tax Aide volunteers assist
seniors with Income Tax filing assistance. This program is free
for individuals who are 50 years and older with low to moderate
income.

Tech Talk
Tech Talk is provided for seniors who need assistance with their
electronic devices. Volunteens are available every month from
4-5pm to assist with their devices.

Weekly
Movie
New movie releases or classic movies are shown on a theater
size screen every Wednesday for free. 93
Sing Along with
James
Sing along with James meets every Wednesday from 1-3pm.
James plays his guitar and sings with a group of seniors for fun
and socialization.

Seminars
Free seminars on various topics are available each month. The
following topics were presented in April: Medicare, Hernia,
Hearing Screening, AARP Smart Driver Tek, Estate Planning &
Probate Clinic and Breathing Retraining.

“You’ve Got
a Friend”
This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who
live alone, feel lonely, or need someone to check on them. New
friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed.

Disco Party
The Spring Fling Disco Party event took place on April 12. The
disco themed party included lunch, dessert, and live music.
Everyone was on the floor dancing to Motown disco from the 60s
and 70s.

Bunco Tea Party
Bunco was held on Friday, April 12 with 40 participants who
enjoyed three sets of six games of bunco. A light lunch and tea
were provided. Next Bunco will take place on Friday, June 14.

Travelers Club
Support services include registering members for trips, signing
up new members, and handling the club’s correspondence. A
monthly club meeting is held each month to discuss future trips
and provide a social gathering.
