HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 05/02/2024SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES May 2, 2024 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER —Chairperson Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE —Chairperson Salazar ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Donna Salter, Nilo Salazar, Joyce Platt, Steve Sherman, and Margaret Swope EXCUSED: Kathryn Penny and Charlene Martinez A motion was made by Commissioner Platt seconded by Commissioner Sherman and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Penny and Martinez. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Sherman reported that Harold Shellum who had just celebrated his 105th birthday passed away in April. Harold was a member of the Men's Club for many years. Commissioner Sherman reported the Men's Club is open to new members, men or women. Commissioner Sherman asked to be excused on June 6, 2024, as he will be on vacation. Vice -Chairperson Swope reported the Friendship Club members will be celebrating Mother's Day on May 8, followed by their regular weekly meetings. Vice -Chairperson Swope reported there is a new member, Grace Stickman, who has joined the Friendship Club. The Friendship Club continues to meet on Wednesdays at 11 am. There are plenty of fun things to do such as lunch treats, bingo, snack attack day, guest speakers, and more. Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers Club is doing well and will hold their general meeting on Friday, May 24, with guest speaker, Mayor April Verlato. Commissioner Platt reported the Travelers Club meets early in the year to discuss new officers for 2025. Commissioner Platt explained new officers are partnered up with current officers to train for a few months in order to make the transition in January as easy as possible. Commissioner Platt reported on upcoming day trips: On July 9, participants will be able to enjoy a one -hour historical tour on the newly renovated Queen May. The trip also includes lunch and a narrated Long Beach Harbor Cruise. On August 6, participants will be traveling to Big Bear Lake to experience native wildlife at the Alpine Zoo followed by lunch and a paddlewheel tour boat ride. On August 29, there will be a mystery trip for everyone who signed up to have a good time. The tour includes two fun stops and lunch. Commissioner Platt reported that extended trips are doing well. There are trips to Alaska, Philadelphia Amish country, and many more. All trips are advertised in the Connection Newsletter or on the Travelers Club website at arcadiatravelers.org. Commissioner Bolster said he would like to reach out to Public Works for a tour of Wilderness Park. Director of Recreation and Community Services, Sara Somogyi (DRCS) advised Commissioner Bolster the park is closed to the public and not safe for anyone to visit the park at this time. DRCS Somogyi informed Commissioner Bolster the City Newsletter has a timeline with the most up-to-date information on Wilderness Park. Commissioner Salter reported the Assistance League had many volunteers assist with putting together backpacks for the next school year for foster children. Commissioner Salter reported the Bargain Box has plenty of wedding dresses available for sale. Commissioner Salter reported the Assistance League and Las Alas are getting many new members. Las Alas meets every month, many of the members are retired teachers. Las Alas supports the Bargain Box and Operation School Bell. Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members are doing well and invites anyone who would like to come and observe their meeting. Chairperson Salazar enjoys promoting healthy living during their meetings, such as information on heart attack, dementia, or any important articles he finds. Chairperson Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members continue to meet every week, and look forward to bingo, exercise, birthday celebrations and much more. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON - None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of April 4, 2024. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Salter, seconded by Commissioner Sherman, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Bolster, Platt, Salter, Salazar, Sherman, Swope NOES: None ABSENT: Penny and Martinez ABSTAIN: None 1. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Gina Hernandez (RS) Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez (RS) reported there will be four new Senior Citizens Commission Members starting in July. Bridge Club is extremely popular with the seniors, there are approximately 20 people showing up and are using a larger room at the Community Center. RS Hernandez reported the Fit and Talk program is every Thursday at 10am. The program is free for a 30-minute workout with a Recreation Coordinator. RS Hernandez reported American Mahjong is new at the Community Center every Tuesday and Traditional Mahjong is every Friday. On Thursday, May 9, there will be free training on how to register online for classes, events, and programs. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) DRCS Somogyi reported there will be a volunteer appreciation dinner held on Thursday, May 16, and asked everyone who is attending to RSVP. The dinner will be held at Le Meridien Hotel in Arcadia. DRCS Somogyi reported there is a health series every month with a different topic each month. May and June flyers were handed out to everyone. In addition, there will not be a Senior Health Fair this year in August. The Health Committee will be hosting a Community Health Fair for all ages at the Community Center on Saturday, August 10, from 9am to 12pm. DRCS Somogyi reported the Taste of Arcadia will be back in September and will be held at the Santa Anita Park on Saturday, September 21. The event will be organized by the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce.
