HIGHLIGHTS
The Gilb Museum has a new Museum Education Coordinator, Ms. Lauren Porras. Staff have
finished the 2023-2024 School Programs with 43 conducted at Arcadia Unified School District
schools. The third Preservation Workshop on digitization was conducted on June 1 with 18
participants.
COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS
Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano has finished working on the Anthony W. Wilkinson Collection
transcription on FromThePage.com. She has now been working with Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo
with the Museum’s new Military Banner Program for the City. This will allow for approximately 125
military banners to hang on Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue for Veterans Day in November
this year. Applications for the program will be available soon.
Intern Ms. Maria Barrios was working on a recent donation from the Tom Payne Collection. Ms.
Barrios also helped staff with exhibits. She will be taking a break during the summer and will be
returning in the Fall.
Intern Mr. Zackary Ostrowski has completed his work on the inventory, curation, and digitization
of the (Sandy) Silverstein Collection. He is reviewing the collection one last time on the Museum’s
database, CatalogIt. Mr. Ostrowski informed Curator Acevedo that he has been accepted to start
the Master of Library Science program at the University of California Los Angeles in the Fall.
Volunteer Mr. Alick Diaz continues to assist with the digitization and cataloging of recent donations
given to the Museum. Mr. Diaz has been digitizing the Arcadia Little League yearbooks from the
Tim Portwood Collection.
Intern Mr. Angelo Yriarte completed his internship at the Gilb Museum on June 13. He was one
of the volunteers that received compensation through the Southern California Resource Services
for Independent Living. Mr. Yriarte worked at the Gilb Museum for one year. He was very helpful
to staff when it came to the construction and counting of educational kits. He also assisted staff
in the opening procedures of the Museum before visitors came in. Staff wishes him the best in his
future endeavors.
Intern Mr. Andrew Bermudez continues his internship at the Gilb Museum with compensation
through the Southern California Resource Services for Independent Living. Mr. Bermudez has
been working on the donation from Dr. Semeen Issa, the First Avenue Middle School Principal,
which consists of class photographs, and awards. Mr. Bermudez’s contract ended in June, but
Curator Acevedo was able to extend his contract at the Museum for an additional six months.

The Museum will be hosting one more intern from the Southern California Resource Services for
Independent Living. Ms. Hannah Chang is a current student at Mount San Antonio Community
College. She will begin her internship at the Museum in late June.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Mr. Ms. Kristin Kasper Glickman donated a Santa Anita Highlands Garden
Club Gourmet Bouquet Cookbook from 1966. She no longer lives in
Arcadia, therefore mailed it to the Museum from Massachusetts.
Mr. Tim Portwood donated Arcadia Little League Yearbooks and City of
Arcadia ephemera.
Ms. Melinda Perkins, on behalf of Mr. Robert Margeti, donated framed keys
to Arcadia Sister City in Greece. Mr. Robert Margeti was a past City of
Arcadia Mayor and Ms. Perkins' father.
Ms. Marilyn Daleo donated trophies from the Arcadia Woman’s Club and
the Arcadia Junior Women’s Club.
Mr. Logan Maertens from Arcadia High School donated two Arcadia High
School yearbooks from the 2023-2024 school year.
Ms. Pat Donnelly, on behalf of her late husband Mr. Jack Donnelly, donated
a full bottle of brandy that was made by Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin’s
vineyard in the early 1900’s.
EXHIBITS
The 14th Annual Photography Contest exhibit is still on display in the Museum’s temporary exhibit
space until July 20.
Curator Acevedo and Ms. Rebecca Andersen are currently working on the research for the Santa
Anita Park 90th Anniversary exhibit which will open on
August 10 this year. Ms. Rebecca Andersen will be the
acting Curator this summer and fall when Ms. Acevedo is
out on leave. Getty Marrow Intern Mr. Samuel Reed will be
primarily working on the exhibit panels and construction
during the summer as part of his overall project. Mr. Kenny
Woo, last year's Getty Marrow Intern and now an adult
volunteer at the Museum, as well as volunteer Mr. Jonathan
Ornelas, will also be working on this project.
Curator Acevedo and Volunteer Woo finished installing the
small exhibit in the Museum’s lobby on Mr. Tom Payne, the
past drama teacher and administrator at Arcadia High School.
Curator Acevedo, Intern Reed, and volunteer Woo also updated the permanent display case.
ADMINISTRATION
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) conducted their May and June board meeting at the
Museum. Museum staff discussed current and ongoing projects and events with the Board
members. Curator Acevedo presented the Museum’s wish list and was approved by the Board at
the May meeting. The Friends of the Museum Board presented their donation to the Museum at
the May 21 Council Meeting. They also promoted their new project to help fund a new enclosed
exhibit case for the Veterans Local History Room. They were able to promote more of this at the
Kathryn Barner event on May 25. The Friends also hosted the Vons Credit Union fundraiser in El
Monte on June 7. Their next meeting will take place on August 1, 2024.
3
A new Museum Education Coordinator has been selected from the
internal candidates that were interviewed. Ms. Lauren Porras was
selected for the position. She is a recent graduate of Whittier College
with a major in Anthropology and a minor in Art History and Biology.
She has worked as a Learning and Engagement Guide as well as an
Artist's Assistant for various installations with the Orange County
Museum of Art. Her first day was May 7.
Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia PTA meeting luncheon on May
7. At the meeting, she shared what current events and programs are
available to the Arcadia community, including Educational Kits,
Summer Enrichment Program, Dino Day, and volunteer opportunities.
Volunteers and Museum Commission Board members were honored at this year's Volunteer and
Commission Board Dinner at the Le Meridien Pasadena Arcadia Hotel on May 16. There were 12
volunteers from the Museum that were invited to attend for having over 100 volunteer hours.
Curator Acevedo was also in attendance.
Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia Historical Society Spring Garden Party on May 18.
Staff, including Director Ms. Darlene Bradley, Curator Acevedo,
Ms. Andersen and First Avenue Middle School teachers Ms.
Karalee Nakatsuka and Mr. Connor Salazar visited Santa Anita

get a tour of the park, including historical rooms. Ms. Acevedo and
Ms. Andersen visited Santa Anita Park once again on June 4 to
look at archival material that can be used for the Museum’s
temporary exhibit on Santa Anita Park 90th Anniversary.
Curator Acevedo and Museum Education Coordinator submitted their proposal for the California
Association of Museums Conference in 2025 on June 7. The proposed topic of their session is
“Hands-On History: Preservation Workshops at the Gilb Museum”. Staff will be notified by July if
the proposal has been accepted to present at the conference in February 2025.
Staff applied for the Superintendent's Award for Excellence in Museum Education Competition
through the California Association of Museums on June 7. This competition recognizes the
outstanding achievements in California museum programs that serve K-12 students and/or
educators. This reflects the 2023 calendar year school programs, which consisted of 61 programs
provided to Arcadia Unified School District. The Museum will be notified if they received the award
by mid July 2024.
The Museum has been awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate
Internship grant to fund two paid internships: Curatorial & Exhibitions
along with Education & Public Engagement. Interns will work 40
hours a week for 10 consecutive weeks. Interns Mr. Samuel Reed
and Ms. Ellya Kim have been selected for the internship positions.
Mr. Reed is a current undergraduate student at the College of the
Holy Cross in Massachusetts, majoring in Classics. Ms. Kim is a
current undergraduate student at the University of California
Berkeley in California, double majoring in Sociology and Media
Studies. They began their internships on June 18.

Curator Acevedo is currently working with Silverlake Conservation on
the Peacock Fountain located in the Los Angeles County Park.
Conservation and restoration work will be done on the fountain itself,
replacing broken and missing tiles, as well as having the bronze
peacock in the fountain waxed. At this time, Silverlake Conservation
worked on cleaning and waxing the peacock on the fountain on April
23. Curator Acevedo is looking for a vendor to help with the repairs
necessary to the interior part of the fountain before tiles begin to be
replaced.
Staff provided a tour to new City of Arcadia employees on June 7.
This allowed City employees to learn more about the history of the
City of Arcadia as well as see the Museum’s Photography Contest
Exhibit. Ms. Porras participated as a new City employee.
Ms. Yurie Fujimoto Marszal from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) reached out
to the Museum for a behind the scenes tour on June 28 for their graduate and undergraduate
interns.
Ms. Porras participated in the National Association of Interpretation Interpretive Guide training
from June 10 to June 18. During this training, she learned the basic principles of interpretation,
creating a program outline, leading thematic interpretive programs, and learnt about the history
of the interpretive profession. These will all be helpful skills for her to know for the curriculum
development of programs at the Museum.
Library and Museum Staff attended the Mayor’s State of the City on June 13, with this year's
theme “Going for Gold”. Director Bradley and Curator Acevedo were able to meet Keynote
Speaker Ms. Mirai Nagasu, a native of Arcadia and Olympic figure skater. They informed her
about being in the Museums Walk of Fame exhibit, highlighting her career and success, while
also attending Arcadia Public Schools.
Curator Acevedo and Getty Interns Reed and Kim will be going on a tour of the Alhambra
Historical Society Museum on June 27.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Curator Acevedo presented at the Arcadia Chamber Community Connection Event via Zoom on
May 2. This allowed for different organizations and community members to learn about what is
happening at the Museum during the summer. Programs such as Summer Enrichment,
Preservation Workshop Series, Dino Day, Photography Contest exhibit, and the Museum’s
monthly scavenger hunt.
The Museum participated once again in the Firefighters Annual Pancake Breakfast on May 4.
Museum Education Coordinator Substitute Ms. Lily Wu and Curator Acevedo passed out items,
flyers, and educational kits with the Arcadia Public Library.
The Museum had a documentary Screening on Norman Mineta and
His Legacy: An American Story on May 11. Co-Producer Ms. Debra
Nakatomi attended the first screening at 10:30am with a Q&A
afterwards. She also provided free DVDs to those who were
interested in having a copy of the documentary. There were 15
people in attendance.
Curator Acevedo gave a tour to the College Women’s Club of Pasadena on May 16.
5
The Museum hosted the third Preservation Workshop on digitization on June 1. Conducted by
Curator Acevedo, there were 18 participants in the workshop. Participants are encouraged to
bring items from their own personal collections if they have any specific questions. The next
workshop will take place on September 7 on paper.
The Museum has conducted all 43 school
programs scheduled for the 2023-2024 school
year. This year the Museum reached all
elementary schools within Arcadia Unified
School District. The Museum hosted the school
program visit from Holly Avenue Elementary on
May 22. Five third grade classes, plus teachers
and parents, for a total of 162 people came to the
Museum. Staff created five stations highlighting
different school programs, including Then vs.
Now, Tongva Time Storytelling, Tongva English
Dictionary, excavation, and a tour were provided. Volunteers from the Friends of the Museum
Board helped with the program and all five stations.
Ms. Porras and Getty Interns Reed and Kim will be attending the first City of Arcadia Summer
Concerts and Movies in the Park on June 20 with the Library Staff. Staff will also be attending the
event on August 8.
Staff and Getty Interns will be attending the Downtown Arcadia Patriotic Festival on June 29. The
Museum will be providing free educational kits to the public, as well as giveaways.
Museum Education Coordinator Porras is preparing for the Gilb Museums 6th Annual Summer
Enrichment Program. For every Saturday during the month of July, the Museum will provide
lessons regarding a variety of topics found in the Museum including animation, ancestry, fossils,
and garbology. Ms. Kim will also be working with Museum Education Coordinator Porras in
teaching the programs for the afternoon sessions.
The Museum has begun to prepare for the annual Dino Day event on August 24. The event will
feature a special collaboration with the Alf Museum of Paleontology from Claremont. This event
aims to engage the community with a variety of educational and entertaining activities centered
around paleontology and the world of dinosaurs.
MARKETING
The Museum continues to promote upcoming events and educational kits across all social media
platforms. Volunteer Ms. Amy Alcan from Pomona College finished volunteering at the Museum
on May 11. She worked on the Museum's social media by creating content that was scheduled to
be posted on Later.com to as of June. Her hard work was greatly appreciated during her time at
the Museum.
Museum Education Coordinator Porras has been focusing on a social media plan and schedule
for the Museum. She is actively promoting events and scheduling them using later.com. Ms.
Porras has begun working with the Education and Public Engagement Getty Intern, Ms. Kim, to
create a stronger social media presence for this upcoming summer.
The Museum’s monthly newsletter via MailChimp has also been very popular in the community
with over 1,400 people registered. The Museum can promote upcoming programs, events, and
collection items to the community.
6
VOLUNTEERS
The Museum continued to actively recruit volunteers, especially in preparations for the summer
during the months of May and June. There have been 5 teen applications and 8 adult volunteer
applications that have been received during this time. Ms. Porras has been conducting the
volunteer interviews and starting the onboarding process with the volunteers.
As of June 20, the Museum has a total of 67 active adult and teen volunteers combined. Due to
the high quantity of volunteers, volunteer applications have closed for the summer and will reopen
again in the Fall.
Volunteers have been very busy with the production of kits that will be shared with the community
in the following months. This includes all the Preservation Workshop kits that are given to
participants who attend the program. Ms. Porras has also had volunteers begin prepping supplies
for the Summer Enrichment Program as well as prepare kits for several outreach programs that
the Museum will be attending such as the Patriotic Festival and Concerts at the Park.
On Saturday, June 15, Ms. Porras conducted the
Summer Volunteer Orientation for all new and returning
teen volunteers. This was a great opportunity for new
volunteers to meet one another and learn about the
expectations required to be a volunteer at the Gilb
Museum along with what programs, kits, and events the
Museum will be hosting this summer.
Adults Ms. Angela Rho, Ms. Hannah Mohammadi, and Ms. Jasmine Xinyu are new volunteers
who are helping at the Museum front desk during the week. Adult volunteer Ms. Azariah Towns
has begun developing lesson plans for our preschool program scheduled to begin this fall.
