SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER —Chairperson Salazar called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Charlene Martinez, Joyce Platt, Donna Salter, Nilo Salazar,
and Margaret Swope
EXCUSED: Robert Bolster, Kathryn Penny, and Steve Sherman
A motion was made by Commissioner Salter seconded by Commissioner Platt and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Bolster, Penny, and Sherman.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS -
None
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS — Shirley Curley announced she wanted to familiarize herself
with the process as she is looking to apply to be a part of the Senior Citizens
Commission.
REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Vice -Chairperson Swope reported the Friendship Club members will be celebrating
Father's Day on June 12. Vice -Chairperson Swope asked if there is financial help for
senior individuals. The Senior Friendship members meet every Wednesday at 1lam at
the Assistance League. The club offers bingo, snack -attack day, special celebrations,
holidays celebrations, and guest speakers. Anyone age 50 and older can join.
Commissioner Platt reported the Arcadia Travelers Club is doing well and will hold their
general meeting on Friday, June 28, at 10am. Commissioner Platt reported participants
attended the Bob Baker Marionette Theater on June 6, followed by lunch at the Smoke
House. On August 6, participants will travel to Big Bear for the day. The guided tour
includes the Alpine Zoo, up close view of native wildlife, followed by a paddlewheel tour
boat ride. On September 13, participants will visit the Broad Museum, tour Los Angeles
murals, and enjoy a mariachi music show at Casa Sanchez. Commissioner Platt reported
there will be an extended trip in March 2025 to South Africa. There are many more
extended trips and information which can be located on the Travelers Website, the
Connection Newsletter, or on the Traveler's flyer rack located near their office in the
Arcadia Community Center.
Commissioner Salter reported she was unable to attend the Volunteer Appreciation
Dinner. Commissioner Salter inquired about the City's paramedic program. Deputy
Director of Recreation and Community Services, Candice Cheung (DDRCS) said there is
information on the City's website. There is an online registration form for the Paramedic
Membership Program (PMP) which can be downloaded through the City's website. The
City offers residents the PMP unlimited 24-hour service for a nominal yearly fee.
Commissioner Martinez said it was a pleasure to be part of the Senior Citizens
Commission for the past two years. Commissioner Martinez said his term will end on June
30, and Joyce McGregor will be the next Senior Citizen Commissioner to represent the
Assistance League. Commissioner Martinez reported the Bargain Box will be open during
the summer and hopes to see everyone shopping.
Chairperson Salazar thanked everyone for the opportunity to be part of the Senior
Citizens Commission. Chairperson Salazar said he is saddened his term is up, but happy
to report Cynthia Salazar will represent the Golden Senior Friendship Club starting in
August and will do a great job.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Regular meeting minutes of June 6, 2024.
Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved by Commissioner Salter, seconded by Commissioner Swope, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

1. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Recreation Coordinator Presentation
Recreation Coordinator Jasmine Rosas (RC) attended the meeting to give a presentation
on her job duties and programs she oversees. Jasmine started her career as a Recreation
Leader with the City of Arcadia in 2019, where she gained experience in recreation youth
sports, coaching, and assisting with class schedules. RC Rosas also assists with
scheduling and promoting programs such as the after -school programs, youth camps,
and excursions. RC Rosas was promoted to Recreation Coordinator in 2021, and
currently oversees contract classes, tot, youth, adult, and senior classes. RC Rosas is
responsible for organizing, scheduling, and coordinating with over 50 instructors to make
sure schedules are in order and advertised in the Peacock Buzz Brochure each quarter.
RC Rosas is responsible for organizing the annual Breakfast with Santa event each year.
b. Report of Recreation Supervisor Gina Hernandez (RS)
Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez (RS) reported the Arcadia Recreation and
Community Services Department is happy to present Arcadia branded merchandise.
Arcadia merchandise consists of bags, shirts, mugs, stickers, key chains, and more.
These items will be available for purchase at the Gift Shop located inside the Arcadia
Community Center and also on Thursdays during Summer Concerts from June 20
through August 8.
RS Hernandez reported on events during the month of May. The Cinco de Mayo event
was attended by 129 participants on May 3. The event included a traditional Mexican
lunch, live entertainment, dancing, and dessert. On May 17, the Bingo event was attended
by 86 participants. Everyone enjoyed the All -Star Bingo themed which included lunch,
refreshments, and raffles. RS Hernandez reported on upcoming events. On June 21, the
Luau event will take place and includes lunch, a Polynesian dancer for entertainment,
and raffle prizes. The Senior Social Hour is returning on June 28. This program is for
individuals who want to meet new people, socialize, or for those who want to join in a
game of getting to know each other. The Doheny Beach Trip is coming soon, participants
are looking forward to spending the day at Doheny State Beach on August 15. This day
trip includes transportation, lunch, snacks, refreshments, and games. Registration for all
upcoming events can be made online or in person.
c. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director RCSD
Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services, Candice Cheung (DDRCS)
handed out the Concerts and Movies series flyers. Concerts and Movies in the park will
begin June 20 through August 8. The events are held on Thursdays at the City Hall lawn
and include entertainment with live bands, free parking, food trucks, games, raffles, and
much more. DDRCS Cheung answered Vice -Chairperson Swope's question on how the
City can assist individuals in need. The City of Arcadia has hired case managers/housing
navigators from Los Angeles Center for Drug and Alcohol Abuse (L.A.CADA) to assist
individuals who are experiencing homelessness or those who need one-time assistance
such as paying a utility bill or rent. The case manager will work with the individual and
assist them to find a solution. DDRCS Cheung reported Community Connect is a program
available through the Fire Department to improve services to Arcadia residents. The
program requires residents to register online at www.communityconnect.io/info/ca-
arcadia. The link is also available through the City's website. By providing as much
information about a residents home, such as location of gas and water shutoff, the number
of pets in the home, etc., first responders will be able to have quick access to the home
and assist bedridden residents, pets, and their property.
DDRCS Cheung reported the Mayor's State of the City will be held on Thursday, June
13, from 4 - 6pm at the Le Meridien Hotel. Registration is required through the City's
website. DDRCS Cheung reported the summer session is now open for registration.
There are many exercise classes to choose, including events, programs, and summer
camps for youth. DDRCS Cheung said pickleball is a fast-growing game for all ages and
happy to report the gym at Dana Middle School has added pickleball lines for indoor
pickleball classes. DDRCS Cheung reminded everyone there will be a Health Fair on
Saturday, August 10, from gam to 12pm, at the Arcadia Community Center. The fair is
available for the community and individuals of all ages.
DDRCS Cheung thanked all those who have been a part of the community, their
involvement, and for being a huge part of the Senior Citizen's Commission.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Salazar adjourned the meeting at 4:37pm to August 1, 2024, at 4:OOpm in
the Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
