HomeMy WebLinkAboutRP Minutes: 07/10/2024RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, July 10, 2024 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Cheung called the meeting to order at 6:01 pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Mediana ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Ayala, Cheung, Mediana, and Vanni SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS - Commissioner Ayala reported he attended Concerts in the Park on June 27. Commissioner Ayala reported the event was festive with good music and people dancing. Commissioner Ayala highly recommends attending this event and complimented the excellent job the Recreation and Community Services Department is doing. Chairperson Cheung — No Report Commissioner Mediana reported the Public Works Services Department was efficient in resolving a tree issue in a public space. Commissioner Vanni reported the road to Chantry Flats remains closed. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Verlato reported the Arcadia City Council Reorganization will be taking place on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Mayor Verlato reported her term as Mayor will conclude with Mayor Pro Tern Michael Cao beginning his term as Mayor. Mayor Verlato reported she will have her last Mahjong with the Mayor on Friday, July 12 and her last Coffee with the Mayor on Tuesday, July 16. Mayor Verlato shared an Arcadia Newsletter from Spring 1974 and reported she will be giving a copy to the Arcadia Gilb Museum. Mayor Verlato reported three Arcadia Employee Associations have ratified their contracts and Arcadia City Council has approved them. Mayor Verlato reported three Employee Associations are still pending. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of June 12, 2024. It was moved by Commissioner Ayala, seconded by Commissioner Vanni, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a with the correction to reflect Commissioner Chu adjourning the meeting not Chairperson Cheung. 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report from Public Works Services Department Project Updates Deputy Director Public Works Services (DDPWS) Carmen Masud reported the Newcastle Park Renovation Project has paused while the City waits for more permits. DDPWS Masud reported the Public Works Services Department will be working on a new project, the baseball bleachers with canopies and restroom improvements to meet the American Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines at Bonita Park and Windsor Field. Monthly Reports Deputy Director Recreation Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reported on several senior programs in the month of June. DDRCS Cheung reported the billiard room remains popular with 314 seniors playing pool. DDRCS Cheung reported 12 seniors participated in the free blood pressure check sponsored by USC Arcadia Hospital. DDRCS Cheung reported the gift shop had 87 visitors. DDRCS Cheung reported 1,385 seniors used the Senior Meals Program. DDRCS Cheung reported the cost of the meal increased from two dollars to three dollars on July 1, 2024. This is the first increase in many years. DDRCS Cheung reported the new Senior Social Hour activity had 12 seniors participate. DDRCS Cheung reported on several recreation programs and activities in the month of June. DDRCS Cheung the Summer Fun 'N Play program had 1,775 children participate in the month of June. DDRCS Cheung reported 214 children attended Specialty Camps. DDRCS Cheung reported Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park had more than 2,300 people attend. DDRCS Cheung reported Community Center rentals remain consistent with 1,305 people utilizing the Community Center on weekends, bringing in over $6,000 in revenue. DDRCS Cheung concluded by handing out a flyer for the upcoming Health Fair on Saturday, August 10, 2024, co -hosted by the City of Arcadia Health Committee. II. Financial Statements DDRCS Cheung reported the Fiscal Year 2023/24 May percentage for expenditures is approximately 79%. DRCS Somogyi reported revenue is at approximately 85%. DDRCS Cheung reported the Parks and Recreation Facilities Fund has seen movement now that the Newcastle Park Renovation project has begun.
