Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. There will be no separate discussion of these items unless members of the Commission, staff, or the public request that a specific item be removed from the Consent Calendar for separate discussion and action. a. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 2, 2025 SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Bolster called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Bolster ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Shirley Curley, Joyce Platt, Cynthia Salazar, and Steve Sherman, Margaret Swope ABSENT: Cris Arzate EXCUSED: Ethel Laczko SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Steve Sherman reported that the Men’s Club members meet every week from 9am to 2:30pm, at the Arcadia Community Center to play pinochle. Commissioner Shirely Curley reported everyone is busy putting away and organizing all the items from the holiday boutique sale. Commissioner Cynthia Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club members had a fun time celebrating the holidays with a Christmas luncheon on December 19. Commissioner Salazar reported the Assistance League is closed from December 26, 2024, through January 8, 2025. Chairperson Robert Bolster asked if there was an update on Wilderness Park. Director of Recreation and Community Services Sara Somogyi (RCSD) responded there is no update, and she will make sure to contact Chairperson Bolster directly should any updates or information come up. Commissioner Margaret Swope reported the Friendship Club members are doing well and celebrated with a holiday party on December 18, which included lunch, games, and Christmas carols. Vice-Chairperson Joyce Platt reported the general meeting in January will be held on Friday, January 24. Vice-Chairperson Platt reported the new 2025 volunteer officers have been elected. The Travelers held their annual holiday lunch at the North Woods Inn restaurant. Vice- Chairperson Platt reported all of January through April trips and information is published in the January Connection Newsletter. Vice-Chairperson Platt reported on the following upcoming trips: On March 25, 2025, there will be a Masterpieces & Heritage tour in Orange County with Main Street Tours. Participants will visit the Hilbert Museum of California Art , highlighting California’s natural beauty in 26 galleries. After lunch, participants will visit the Bowers Museum which holds an extensive collection of art from around the world. On April 2, 2025, there will be a Mystery Olympics Trip of the 2028 tour games with Kurt Tucker which will take place in Los Angeles. Participants will be able to preview venues and have lunch at a mystery location. On April 30, 2025, the That’s Amore Italian Tour with Kurt Tucker will be an all-Italian day trip, with an emphasis on the Italian culture around the city of Los Angeles. Participants will learn about architecture, fashion, art, food, and cinema. Vice-Chairperson Platt invited everyone to the Arcadia Women’s Club to celebrate Veterans. The lunch event will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 11am. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON – None 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of November 7, 2024. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Platt, seconded by Commissioner Sherman, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Bolster, Curley, Platt, Salazar, Sherman NOES: None ABSENT: Arzate and Laczko ABSTAIN: Swope 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS) Recreation Supervisor, Annie Sumioka (RS) reported on programs and events during the month of December. On December 13, the Musical Moments program was held with a guest pianist who played classical holiday music. On December 19, 48 of the Community Center volunteers attended the volunteer appreciation brunch to thank them for all the work they do throughout the year. Everyone enjoyed their new coffee mug, a nice brunch, and entertainment. On December 20, a holiday brunch event was held for senior patrons. The event included a photo with Santa Claus, brunch, carolers, and raffle prizes. RS Sumioka reported on upcoming programs and events. The New Years Bingo is open for registration. The Senior Cinema program will now be held on Tuesdays at the Museum Education Center. The next Taste the Town will be on January 16, where participants will meet at Marugame Udon restaurant. The Senior Social Hour will be held on January 24, at 12:30pm in the lobby area and will include refreshments. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) RCSD Somogyi reported a 100-year time capsule was found at Newcastle Park during construction. RCSD Somogyi will be working together with Library Director, Darlene Bradley, to research the best practices, to identify the location, and what rules and museum pertain to the time capsule. RCSD Somogyi reported the Arcadia Fire Department was featured in the Rosebowl Parade in their 1926 fire engine. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make friends. 167 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure checks are available the second Tuesday of the month from 10-11am in the Community Center. 8 Bridge Bridge is available Wednesdays from 10am-1pm and Fridays from 1-4pm. Card games can help improve memory and cognition, it also enhances motor skills and promotes socialization. 68 Classes Exercise plays a vital role in a senior’s health and contributes to bone density, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. Some of the classes offered are line dancing, cardio plus, Zumba and more. 1,512 Coffee with the Mayor On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors can stop by the Community Center to listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 18 Fit & Talk On Thursdays, Fit & Talk meets for a fun and easy 30-minute workout. Each week there is a new inspired workout. 14 Gift Shop The gift shop sells jewelry, hand crafts, and unique items made by senior crafters for a great price. The Gift Shop is located at the Community Center and open to the public. Shoppers 314 Revenue $780 Information & Referral Intakes The Information & Referral (I&R) program assists seniors and their families with issues that affect their quality of life by providing I&R referrals that address their living concerns. 15 Karaoke On the first and third Tuesday of each month, seniors can participate in karaoke. Karaoke is a popular program where senior participants enjoy singing to their favorite tunes in many languages. 78 Lions Sight The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free vision care. Prospective Clients are screened to make the necessary arrangements for their free service. 2 Mahjong Mahjong is a popular game of Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. Participants are welcome every Friday from 12:30 to 3pm. 60 Monday Dance Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. The program provides a good atmosphere for participants to show off their dance skills and to meet new dancers. Live bands play a variety of popular music to dance to. Refreshments are provided. 103 Monthly Bus Pass Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 15 Pinochle Pinochle meets every Monday from 9am-2pm. Pinochle is a trick taking ace ten card game of German origin usually played by two to four people with a 48-card deck. 12 Senior Meals Program A nutritious meal is provided Monday-Friday for $3 for individuals age 55+ and $4 for individuals ages 50-54. Lunch is served promptly at 11:30am, and patrons have the option to pay for their lunch meal online between the hours of 7:30-10am. Meals - 921 Average Meals 48/Day Senior Seminars Free seminars are available every month on various topics. The following topic was presented in January: Tips for Soothing Ailing Skin. 58 Sing along with James Sing along with James meets every Wednesday from 1-3pm. James plays his guitar and sings songs from the 50s-80s with a group of seniors for fun and socialization. 75 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8am-4pm. Equipment is available at the front desk for seniors to play and meet new friends. 153 Taste the Town Each month participants meet at a different restaurant to have lunch and socialize. In January, participants had lunch at Marugame Udon restaurant. Everyone enjoyed the food and cheesecake for dessert. 16 Weekly Movie A weekly movie is available for seniors to watch every Tuesday at 12:30pm. A short film is also shown before the start of the movie. The following movies were shown this month: Bohemian Rhapsody, Amsterdam, Exhale, And Cinderella (1997). The short film was Lost & Found. 25 New Year’s Bingo On January 17, the New Year’s Bingo program was held. The program includes eight rounds of Bingo, a light lunch, and raffle prizes. 50 Senior Social Hour The Senior Social Hour program was held on January 24, at the Community Center and includes hot cocoa, muffins, and a fun lively round of questions from the host for everyone to get to know each other. 14 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and handling the Club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss future trips and provide a social gathering.
