1. PUBLIC COMMENTS (5-minute time limit per person)
Any individual wishing to speak before the Recreation and Parks Commission is limited to five (5) minutes
per person, unless waived by the Recreation and Parks Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Recreation
and Parks Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted
agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be
placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Vanni called the meeting to order at 6:05pm.

A motion was made by Chairperson Vanni, seconded by Commissioner Ayala, and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to excuse Commissioner Cheung.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Ayala reported he visited Tierra Verde Park for the first time. He reported the tennis
courts were well used and he and his daughter enjoyed the park. Commissioner Ayala inquired
about the court rules and how the courts are managed. Director of Recreation Community
Services (DRCS) Sara Somogyi informed Commissioner Ayala the public can call the Recreation
Department or the Police Department to resolve any issues that may arise.
Commissioner Goldsby reported he visited Eisenhower Park. Commissioner Goldsby reported
his goal is to become familiar with all the parks in the City by visiting each facility.
Vice -Chairperson Mediana reported Terra Verde Park is always well maintained and enjoys the
facility.
Chairperson Vanni reported he attended an Arcadia Historical Society meeting about the History
of the Pack Station near Chantry Flats above the City of Arcadia. Chairperson Vanni reported the
road to Chantry Flats has been reopened.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Verlato reported the November 5 City Council meeting was canceled due to
election night. Council Member Verlato reported David Fu is the newly elected City Council
Member and will take office on December 3, 2024. Council Member Verlato reported there will be
a reception for the City Council Re -Organization on December 3, 2024. Council Member Verlato
reported on the Elara Project, an affordable housing development in Los Angeles County close
to the border of Arcadia. Council Member Verlato reported some of the City of Arcadia residents
are opposed to the size, lack of parking, and the potential occupants of the units. Council Member
Verlato reported Military Banners have gone up on Huntington Drive honoring 64 Veterans.
2. CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of October 9, 2024.
It was moved by Chairperson Vanni, seconded by Commissioner Ayala, and unanimously
carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a.
3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
I. Project Updates
Deputy Director Public Works Services (DDPWS) Carmen Masud reported all Metro permits for
the Newcastle Park Renovation project have been approved and construction has started. Project
Completion is estimated for August 2025. DDPWS Masud reported the City has received
Proposition 68 funding in the amount of $170,797 for the Newcastle Park renovation project.
DDPWS Masud reported the Bleacher Projects at Bonita Park and Hugo Reid Park are in the final
stage and will be open for regular use soon. DDPWS Masud reported the Community Clean Up
Day took place on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Hugo Reid Park. New plants, drip irrigation
and fresh mulch by the tennis court entrance were added, giving it a fresh clean appearance.
b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department
Monthly Reports
DRCS Somogyi reported on several senior programs in the month of October. DRCS Somogyi
reported Bridge had 136 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported Fit & Talk had 45 participants.
DRCS Somogyi reported the Gift shop had 217 visitors. DRCS Somogyi reported Karaoke had
52 seniors participate and will increase to twice a month. DRCS Somogyi reported Mahjong had
104 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported the Monday Dance had 199 seniors attend. DRCS
Somogyi reported 25 seniors attended Taste the Town at the Cheesecake Factory in Arcadia.
DRCS Somogyi reported on October 11, the annual Western Hoedown had 148 participants in
attendance. DRCS Somogyi reported on Friday October 18, 26 seniors played Wicked Bingo.
DRCS Somogyi reported 350 people attended the annual Community Craft Fair held at the
Community Center on Saturday, October 29. DRCS Somogyi reported 52 seniors participated in
the annul Cultural Day Camp on Thursday, October 24. This year's participants learned about
Japanese culture. DRCS Somogyi reported 85 seniors participated in the annual Boo Bash held
on October 31.
DRCS Somogyi reported on several recreation programs and activities in the month of October.
DRCS Somogyi reported the Adult Basketball League had 829 participants. DRCS Somogyi
reported the Afterschool Youth Volleyball program had 864 children participate in the month.
DRCS Somogyi reported Kid's Night out had 51 children attend. DRCS Somogyi reported the
Recreation and Community Services Department participated in the Arcadia Downtown
Association's Halloween Haunting on Friday, October 25. Over 6,000 people came out to enjoy
Halloween themed activities and trick or treating at local businesses. DRCS Somogyi reported
youth and adult classes had over 3,500 participants in the month of October. DRCS Somogyi
reported Community Center rentals had eight rentals with 1,085 people in attendance in the month
of October

SENIOR SERVICES DIVISION
Arcadia Senior Services plays an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of
programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

DESCRIPTION
Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from
7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends.
Free blood pressure check is available the second Tuesday of f
each month, from 10-1 lam in the Community Center.

Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10am-1 pm and Fridays
from 1-4pm. Card games help improve memory and cognition, 68
enhance motor skills, and promote socialization.
Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone
density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and 1,512
can also reduce stress. Some classes offered are line dance,
cardio plus, art, chair yoga, and Zumba.
On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors can stop by the f
Community Center to listen and chat with the Mayor about City 18
issues and topics of personal interest.
Fit & Talk On Thursdays, Fit & Talk meets for a fun and easy 30-minute 14
workout. Each week there is a new inspired workout.
The gift shop sells jewelry, hand crafts, and unique items made
Gift Shop by senior crafters for a great price. The Gift Shop is located at
the Community Center and open to the public.
Information & The Information & Referral (I&R) program assists seniors and
Referral Intakes their families with issues that affect their quality of life by
providing I&R referrals that address their daily living concerns.
On the first and third Tuesday of the month, seniors can
Karaoke participate in karaoke. Karaoke is a popular program where
senior participants enjoy singing to their favorite tunes in many

The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the
Lions Sight Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free
vision care. Prospective clients are screened to make the
necessary arrangements for the free service.
F_ Mahjong is a popular game of Chinese origin played by four
Mahjong people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player
secures a winning hand. Participants are welcome every Friday
from 12:30 to 3pm.
Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each
Monday month. This program provides a good atmosphere for
Dance participants to show off their dance skills and to meet new
dancers. Live bands play a variety of popular music to dance to.
Refreshments are provided.
Monthly Dial A Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and
Bus Pass can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month.
Pinochle
Pinochle meets every Monday from 9am-2pm. Pinochle is a trick
taking ace ten card game of German origin usually played by two
to four people with a 48-card deck.
A nutritious meal is provided Monday -Friday for $3 for individuals

Senior Meals age 55+ and $4 for individuals ages 50-54. Lunch is served Meals -921
Program promptly at 11:30am, and patrons have the option to pay for their Average Meals
lunch online between the hours of 7:30-10am. 48/Day
Senior Free seminars are available every month on various topics. The
Seminars following topic was presented in January: Tips for soothing Ailing 58
Skin.
Sing Along with Sing along with James meets Wednesdays from 1-3pm. James
James plays his guitar and sings songs from the 50s-80s with a group 75
of seniors for fun and socialization.

Table Tennis is available Monday -Friday, from 8am-4pm.
Equipment is available at the front desk for seniors to play and
meet new friends.
Each month, participants meet at different restaurants to have
lunch and socialize. In January, participants had lunch at
Marugame Udon restaurant. Everyone enjoyed the food and
cheesecake for dessert.
A weekly movie is available for seniors to watch every Tuesday
at 12:30pm. A short film is also shown before the start of the
movie. The following movies were shown in the month of
January: Bohemian Rhapsody, Amsterdam, Exhale, and
Cinderella (1977). The short film was Lost & Found.
On January 17, the New Year's Bingo program was held. The
program included eight rounds of Bingo, a light lunch, and raffle
prizes.
The Senior Social Hour Program was held on January 24, at the
Community Center and included hot cocoa, muffins, and a fun
lively round of questions from the host for everyone to get to
know each other.

RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION
The Recreation Services Division is responsible for providing programs and activities which meet the
recreational needs of the community. A diverse selection of programs is offered for youth, adults, and
families to provide the opportunity for positive recreation experiences and to promote health and
wellness. A brief description and attendance totals for the programs and services is listed below.
