Wray, Deputy Director of Development Services l V SUBJECT: STUDY SESSION: NEXTG NETWORKS MEMORANDUM Development Services Department The City has been approached by NextG Networks of California, a telecommunications company, to lease the use of City street Tight poles and underground conduit for their equipment. NextG is a fiber -based telecommunications company that builds and leases networks to wireless carriers. NextG does not provide wireless service directly to the public. They propose to install their facilities within the City of Arcadia's public right -of -way including above and below ground fiber optics lines and small antennas and equipment boxes on utility poles. Their equipment can be installed on any utility poles with little difficulty and in other cities they have used city -owned poles as well as utility company poles. Attached are examples of their equipment on both street light poles and utility company poles. The reason for the different equipment is because of the coordination with other utility lines on the utility company poles. NextG has approached the City with a request to lease the use of City street Tight poles and underground conduit to house their facilities. They propose the equipment in Exhibit "A" 2. They have requested to enter into a Lease Agreement with the City for the use of City facilities, and they have offered a lease fee of $500 per year for each pole used and a fee of $1.00 per foot of underground conduit. They have approved agreements with several other cities in the San Gabriel Valley using the same lease rates. Staff feels that there are several benefits to placing the equipment on city facilities. The equipment on the street light poles is more aesthetically pleasing than on the utility company poles and the City has more control over NextG's choice of City pole locations. Each location will generate revenue for the City. NextG is currently requesting the use of three street lights, but there could be more in the future. Study Session: NextG Networks November 3, 2009 Page Two Before any further negotiations with NextG, staff requests the City Council's direction to proceed. If the Council does not choose to allow the use of City facilities, NextG will proceed to use utility company -owned poles.
