HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 3b: Appointment of Manager Pro Tempore (Assistant City Manager)Office of the City Manager DATE: December 1, 2009 TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Don Penman, City Manager IF SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF CITY MANAGER PRO TEMPORE Recommendation: Approve SUMMARY With the upcoming retirement of Pat Malloy, it is necessary to appoint a City Manager Pro Tempore who will serve during the temporary absence or disability of the City Manager. This report recommends that the City Council approve the appointment of Jason Kruckeberg, Development Services Director, as the City Manager Pro Tempore (also referred to as the Assistant City Manager). DISCUSSION With the retirement of Pat Malloy on December 30, 2009, it becomes necessary for the City Manager to appoint a City Manager Pro Tempore who will serve during the temporary absence or disability of the City Manager. Section 603 of the City Charter provides that the City Manager make the appointment, which is subject to the approval of the City Council. By way of this staff report I am requesting City Council approval of the appointment of Jason Kruckeberg as City Manager Pro Tempore. Mr. Kruckeberg will continue to function as the Development Services Director with the new title of Assistant City Manager /Development Services Director. I believe Jason is very qualified for this position and will continue to serve the City of Arcadia well in this capacity. FISCAL IMPACT There is already a position classification of Assistant City Manager /Development Services Director so there is no need to create a new classification. The salary is 5% above the current Development Services Director range; an appropriation is not necessary as the additional cost will be absorbed in the current operating budget: Mayor and City Council appointment of City Manager Pro Tempore December 1, 2009 Page 2 RECOMMENCATION It is recommended that the City Council approve the appointment of Jason Kruckeberg as Development Services Director /Assistant City Manager (City Manager Pro Tempore).
