RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Chairperson Vanni called the meeting to order at 6:00pm.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Public Works Services Department Street Superintendent
(PWSDSS) Dave Thompson.

1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Ayala commended the City on a job well done being awarded the Tierra Verde
Tennis Court Resurfacing Grant. Commissioner Ayala reported the surface of the playground at
Bonita Park is starting to get holes in it. Commissioner Ayala inquired how it is determined when
a maintenance issue will be addressed. Director Recreation Community Services (DRCS) Sara
Somogyi stated there are monthly scheduled inspections by qualified staff who follow a
recommended guideline of assessing necessary repairs. PWSDSS Thompson stated he will look
into the Bonita Park playground. Commissioner Ayala reported he is looking forward to the Little
League Opening Day Ceremonies on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Commissioner Cheung expressed her gratitude to the City for the response and care given to the
community during the windstorm and Eaton Fire disaster in January.
Commissioner Goldsby expressed well wishes to anyone affected by the recent windstorm and
Eaton Fire Disaster in January.
Vice -Chairperson Mediana thanked the City for doing an excellent job providing services to the
community during and after the windstorm and the Eaton Fire disaster in January. Vice
Chairperson Mediana thanked the Public Works Services Department for taking care of a tree
issue in Tierra Verde Park. Vice Chairperson Mediana reported debris along the wash in the area
between Duarte Rd and Camino Real. Director Recreation and Community Services (DRCS) Sara
Somogyi stated the wash is Los Angeles County property and will work with the County to address
the issue.
Chairperson Vanni reported he was evacuated from his home due to the Eaton Fire. Chairperson
Vanni acknowledged the incredible job done by firefighters working to save community homes.
Chairperson Vanni inquired about the volume of construction vehicles in the Highland Oaks area.
PWSDSS Thompson responded this may be residual debris clean up from Los Angeles County
dredging Santa Anita Dam. Chairperson Vanni reported the road to Chantry Flats is closed again.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Eileen Wang reported on January 13, 2025, Arcadia City Council members went
to visit Altadena and view some of the fire damage areas in person. An estimated 8,500 homes
and businesses were lost. Council Member Wang reported a dumping site has been designated
at Lario Park in Azusa for toxic waste removal from the Eaton Fire burn areas. Council Member
Wang reported these trucks will be passing through the City of Arcadia on the way to the dumping
site in Azusa. Council Member Wang reported the City Council has expressed opposition to
potential toxic waste being transported through the City of Arcadia. Council Member Wang
reported the City Council has received information there may be another site closer to Pasadena
that may be used to dump the toxic waste from the Eaton Fire. Council Member Wang thanked
Public Works Services Department for all the challenging work cleaning up the aftermath from the
windstorm and fire. Council Member Wang commended all City employees for a job well done.
CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of November 13, 2024.
It was moved by Commissioner Goldsby, seconded by Commissioner Ayala, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a.
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
Project Updates
PWSDSS Thompson reported Newcastle Park renovations are progressing with the retention
basin and some of the walkways going in. PWSDSS Thompson showed photos of the work in
progress. PWSDSS Thompson reported Newcastle Park is scheduled to be completed in August
2025. PWSDSS Thompson reported preparation is underway in anticipation of coming rains and
the potential for flooding and mudslides from the recent fires.
b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department
DRCS Somogyi welcomed Council Member Wang as the new Liaison to the Recreation and Parks
Commission. DRCS Somogyi informed the Commission the City Website has a link to the latest
storm information so the community can get updates on flooding, road closures, or evacuation
warnings quickly and accurately. DRCS Somogyi introduced new Recreation Supervisor (RS)
Natalie Gonzalez. RS Gonzalez gave a brief history of her experience in recreation including
youth, adult, and senior activities. Supervisor Gonzalez reported she supervises two coordinators
who organize youth programs, youth sports, and adult sports. Some of her other duties include
field allocations and Dana Gym programs.
DRCS Somogyi apologized for the cancellation of the January Recreation and Parks Commission
meeting due to the Eaton Fire. DRCS Somogyi explained the role the Recreation and Community
Services Department has in the state of an emergency and how the Community Center was
opened as a staging center for evacuees to come and regroup as they found alternatives places
to go. DRCS Somogyi reported the Community Center stayed open 24 hours as a staging center
for three days with staff rotating shifts through the 24-hour periods.

DRCS Somogyi reported on several senior programs in the month of January. DRCS Somogyi
reported the Billiard Room had 167 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported senior classes had
1,512 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported Coffee with the Mayor had 18 seniors in attendance.
DRCS Somogyi reported the new Karaoke program had 78 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported
Mahjong had 60 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported the Monday Dance had 103 participants
DRCS Somogyi reported DRCS Somogyi reported 58 seniors attended the January seminar Tips
for Soothing Ailing Skin. DRCS Somogyi reported Sing Along with James had 75 in attendance.
DRCS Somogyi reported New Year's Bingo had 50 participants.
DRCS Somogyi reported on several recreation programs and activities in the month of January.
DRCS Somogyi reported the Afterschool Program had 3,784 children attend. DRCS Somogyi
reported the Youth Basketball League had 816 participants. DRCS Somogyi reported nine
Volunteens gave a total of 48 hours service. DRCS Somogyi reported Winter Camp had 113
participants. DRCS Somogyi reported over 1,800 youth and adults participated in classes. DRCS
Somogyi reported Community Center rentals are doing well with 1,300 people utilizing the facility
on the weekends.
DRCS Somogyi concluded her report by handing out information on the Arcadia Parks
Foundations and the Commemorative Brick fundraiser the foundation is doing for the Newcastle
Park Renovation project.

SENIOR SERVICES DIVISION
Arcadia Senior Services plays an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of
programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

DESCRIPTION
Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday from
7:30am-4:30pm for seniors to enjoy and make new friends.
Free blood pressure checks are available the second Tuesday
of each month, from 10-1lam in the Community Center.
Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10am-1 pm and Fridays
Bridge from 1-4pm. Card games help improve memory and cognition,
enhance motor skills, and promote socialization.

Fit & Talk
Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone
density improvement, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and
can also reduce stress. Some classes offered are line dance,
cardio plus, art, chair yoga, and Zumba.
On the third Tuesday of the month, seniors can stop by the
Community Center to listen and chat with the Mayor about City
issues and topics of personal interest.
On Thursdays, Fit & Talk meets for a fun and easy 30-minute
workout. Each week there is a new inspired workout.

The gift shop sells jewelry, hand crafts, and unique items made Shoppers 128
Gift Shop by senior crafters for a great price. The Gift Shop is located at Revenue $457

Referral Intakes
Karaoke
The Information & Referral (I&R) program assists seniors and
their families with issues that affect their quality of life by
providing I&R referrals that address their daily living concerns.
On the first and third Tuesday of the month, seniors can
participate in karaoke. Karaoke is a popular program where
participants enjoy singing to their favorite tunes in many
languages.

The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the
Lions Sight
Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free

vision care. Prospective clients are screened to make the
necessary arrangements for the free service.
Mahjong is a popular game of Chinese origin played by four

people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player
secures a winning hand. Participants are welcome every Friday

The Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of

Sweetheart On February 7, the Sweetheart Bunco program was held. The
Bunco program includes three sets of six rounds, a light lunch, and raffle
prizes.
On February 14, the Arcadia Community Center, and the Arcadia
Lunar New Year Chinese Association held the Annual Lunar New Year
celebration. Guests enjoyed the event which included a
traditional Chinese meal and entertainment.
Musical On February 21, seniors enjoyed an afternoon with Jazz Pianist,
Moments Sabine Pothier. Sabine talked about the history of jazz music, the
instruments, and played popular songs.
Arcadia
Travelers Club
Support services include registering members for trips, signing
up new members, and managing the club's correspondence. A
monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss
future trips and provide a social gathering.

RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION
The Recreation Services Division is responsible for providing programs and activities which meet the
recreational needs of the community. A diverse selection of programs is offered for youth, adults, and
families to provide the opportunity for positive recreation experiences and to promote health and
wellness. A brief description and attendance totals for the programs and services is listed below.

Education Series seminar on "My Apple Watch says I have Atrial 33
Fibrillation, Should / be Concerned"? presented by Dr. Ivan Ho, MD.
Examples of classes offered at this location include exercise classes,
karate, cooking, chess, table tennis, yoga, lip reading, painting, and line 1,743
