ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – March 2025
HIGHLIGHTS
Children’s Services staff hosted a Dog Man themed book party which
attracted 159 attendees. Special guests Lucas Hopkins and Brian
Hopkins, who voiced characters in the Dog Man feature film, read from
a Dog Man book, shared their experiences working on the film, and
answered audience questions. Kids also learned how to draw one of the
book characters and discovered fun facts about the author, Dav Pilkey.
A middle school student who hosted a recent
financial literacy themed program at the
Library was awarded $100 for winning his
school’s Community Impact Project Fair. The student gifted the funds
to the Library and the money will be used to purchase additional
financial literacy books for the juvenile collection.
There have been additional changes to Adult and Teen Services
shelving with a new location for the Community Information flyers and
a shift in the Book Group Selection materials that now only occupy the
shelves facing the Reference Desk.
PROGRAMMING
The Adult Services Librarian hosted a “Keychain on Cricut” program in
which thirteen adults received a tutorial on how to use a Cricut and
then made their own keychains. This month’s International Film
Program showcased a Chilean film entitled The Club. Bookish
members gathered and discussed Circe by Madeline Miller and the
newly established Bookmarked group talked about Baek Sehee’s book
entitled I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki.
Teens created their own self-published mini-zines during the “Zine
Zone” program and March was a busy month for Teen Zone with 355
teen visitors.
The annual Bookmark Contest kicked-off on March 1, inviting kids,
teens, and adults to design original bookmarks based upon the “Level
Up” theme. There were also ten early literacy programs offered
throughout the month with 515 children and their caregivers in
attendance. Middle school students participated in a variety of
programming, including Game Day Unplugged, the Middle School
Advisory Group meeting, and Booking Together in which participants
discussed Alone written by Meagan Freeman. A new monthly middle

school newsletter was also released in March and highlighted books, e-resources, and upcoming
programming for middle school students.
PARTNERSHIPS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Children’s Services staff attended several community outreaches
throughout the month, including Family Literacy Night at Highland
Oaks Elementary School, a Read Across America event at Baldwin
Stocker Elementary School, and a visit to three preschool classes at
Right at School Early Learning Center.
Staff attended Arcadia Unified School District’s PTA Council meeting
and shared about happenings at the Library.
COLLECTIONS
Technical Services staff continued to work on discards, damaged
books, original cataloguing of gift books, creating useful records for
Chinese and Korean language materials, as well as assisting Adult Services staff with maintaining
the nonfiction collections.
Shelving Management staff and a volunteer updated the shelf end
signage in the adult nonfiction areas which will help patrons and
shelving staff to better navigate the non-fiction collection.
Children’s Services received a new selection of Launchpads which
are learning tablets equipped with pre-loaded learning applications,
stories and videos.
TECHNOLOGY
Staff worked to delete unused files on the Library’s website as part of
the City’s larger website re-design project.
There were 10,285 visits to the Library Catalog, local web documents, and online databases with
2,355 unique visitors. There were 6,022 unique public Wi-Fi users and a total of 7.5TB of data
downloaded and uploaded throughout the month.
ADMINISTRATION
Administrative staff attended various meetings, including the City Council Goal Setting Session,
the Southern California Library Cooperative (SCLC) Planning Session, and an SCLC
Administrative Meeting.
Staff reviewed fines and fees for the Library and Museum and put forth recommendations for a
small rental increase for the Cay Mortenson Auditorium, consistent with the CPI increase for the
past year.
Restrictions were reviewed for retired substitute staff who return to work as retired annuitants.
These employees were helpful due to their flexibility in scheduling. Per the California State Public
Employee Retirement System, however, retired annuitants may only be used for a defined set of
time and for specific work projects that cannot be carried out by staff.
STAFFING
The new part-time Librarian I for Children’s Services will assume her position on May 5.

Meetings and will no longer serve on the Board. City Council will appoint a new person from an
existing list to fill Trustee Akalamkam’s term. Trustee Carter announced that there will need to be
two replacements as she will also term out.
Director’s Update:
Director Bradley shared that the Library has experienced an uptick with problem patrons and that
the issues take up a lot of staff time. She acknowledged that continued staff training is ongoing.
Director Bradley explained that a person visiting the Library removed the contents of one of the
Memory Bags and took the bag. The Library does have a case manager but some of the people
are just passing through and not seeking out assistance.
Monthly Statistical Report: February 2025:
Director Bradley announced that the gate count was growing with more people coming into the
Library. The circulation count is also growing. There is an uptick in teen program attendance. The
juvenile statistics are down slightly, not unusual, with new staff who are learning the section.
Collection ordering in Adult Services has been slower due to staff dealing with other matters.
The digital collection is growing in usage as people are more comfortable with eBooks and
eAudios and doing away with older technologies. Children’s Services has done away with books
on CD and Adult Servies is slowly doing away with this collection. DVDs are also on the way out
and nice to see patrons adapting to electronic collections.
The number of materials catalogued is lower due to issues with Baker and Taylor and lots of their
materials being backordered.
Reference questions are up and there is more participation in Adult and Teen programs.
Library staff have been tasked to review webpages and discard older pages. The City will be
getting a new website.
The Library has done more noticing for overdue books to prompt patrons to return the materials.
As a result, the fines and fees are decreasing.
Trustee Delphey inquired about credit readers. Library Services Manager Alba explained that the
readers offer a self-service option for patrons wanting to pay their fines and are an upgrade due
to the new teller system.
Monthly Report Narrative: February 2025:
Chair Pro-Tempore Chen inquired about the Transitional Partnership Program (TPP) and Library
Services Manager Alba explained that the program is in partnership with Arcadia High School.
The program helps student transition into the workforce after high school. When taking part in the
program, students rotate through different locations. Sites teach students how to be professional,
about communications, and monthly evaluations. If a student is not grasping something, then a
coach will follow up. Students must have a work permit and do an informal interview.
Chair Pro-Tempore Chen commented on the Library’s changed relationship with the local schools
over the years. Director Bradley added that staff have been working for a number of years to build
stronger relationships with the schools.
Financial Report: February 2025:
Director Bradley acknowledged that Vacation Sell Back in Children’s Services is overspent and
explained that when an employee leaves the person may opt to sell back their vacation time. The
City’s credit card payments are now reflected through December 2024 so there may be more
spent than what is reflected in the financial report.
Staff Update:
There is a wait for the part-time Librarian I position due to a problem with the Department of
Justice database which caused delay. Library Aide Shu Shu P. retired at the end of February.
Director Bradley announced that the Library is almost fully staffed.
Serving with a Purpose 2025:
The Library has reserved a table for eight people for this year’s Serving with a Purpose
conference. There is one more open space in case anyone from the Library Board or Friends
Board would like to attend.
Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage:
Director Bradley announced that the Museum is currently running a Photography Contest.
Director Bradley explained that the Museum Curator Acevedo is consolidating collections and de-
accessioning non-Arcadia items to make much needed space. The Museum will also be hosting
a “Preserving Memories” event in which participants will help to digitize old photographs. Museum
staff provided a Preservation presentation at a recent conference and received a Getty intern
grant.
Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: April 2025

be given out at the event. There will also be a Spring Garden Workshop with a master gardener
