1. PUBLIC COMMENTS (5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT PER PERSON)
Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes
per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior
Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the
posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or
action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

SENIOR COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Bolster called the meeting to order at 4:00pm.

PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Shirley Curley, Joyce Platt, Cynthia Salazar, and
Steve Sherman
ABSENT: Chris Arzate, Ethel Laczko, and Margaret Swope
A motion was made by Commissioner Bolster seconded by Commissioner Sherman and
unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Arzate, Laczko, and Swope.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Steve Sherman reported that the Men’s Club members are doing great and
continue to meet every week from 9am to 2:30pm at the Arcadia Community Center to play
pinochle.
Chairperson Robert Bolster handed everyone a memo he typed up regarding Wilderness Park.
The memo indicates he is an advocate for Wilderness Park. Chairperson Bolster believes
Wilderness Park is an invaluable asset to the City of Arcadia and to the community. Chairperson
Bolster asked Council Member Cao if there was an update. Council Member Cao responded there
is no update. Council Member Cao reiterated that the opening of Wilderness Park involves City,
County, and Federal which will take a long time. The focus and priority at this time for the County
and Federal agencies is to assist those who were affected by the Altadena fires in January 2025.
Commissioner Shirely Curley reported the Assistance League celebrated its 70th birthday this
year. Commissioner Curley handed out a memo that includes a brief history of the Assistance
League Arcadia and the statistics for this year. The Assistance League has 120 chapters
nationwide and has many programs available which include Operation School Bell, Day of
Service, Assisteens, Las Alas, The Bargain Box Thrift Shop, and more. Commissioner Curley was
saddened to report the Friendship Club is no longer meeting as the club has dissolved.
Commissioner Margaret Swope was the representative for the Friendship Club and will no longer
be attending the Senior Commission meetings.
Vice-Chairperson Joyce Platt reported the Travelers Club is in the process of the nominating
committee. In the month of May the Travelers Club nominates new members, in June they will
vote, and new nominees begin their new assignments in January 2026. Vice-Chairperson Platt
reported the guest speaker for May’s meeting is Kathy Symons. Kathy is a professor at Rio Hondo
College and world traveler. Kathy has visited over 160 countries and only has approximately 40
countries left to visit. Vice-Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming trips. On July 16, participants
will visit the Cosm, a state-of-the-art immersive dome venue that includes a private guided tour.
On July 18, participants will have a private tour of the USS Iowa, a battleship that served in WWII,
Korean War, and the Cold War. On August 6, participants will experience the elegance and
richness of France at Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Market, Bistro, and Seafood Market. On August
21, participants will spend the day in Santa Barbara which includes lunch at Padaro Beach Grill
followed by a fun ride on the Land Shark vehicle, which travels on land and on water.
Commissioner Cynthia Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club is doing great and some of the
Friendship Club members have joined the club. Commissioner Salazar reported a staff from the
Police Department will be the guest speaker in May. Commissioner Salazar reported there will be
a Mother’s Day celebration on May 15.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Council Member Dr. Michael Cao was happy to report the Santa Anita Park has been confirmed
as the equestrian venue for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The Santa Anita Park hosted the
equestrian events during the 1984 games. Council Member Cao mentioned if anyone is interested
in becoming a volunteer at the Olympic Games, one will have to apply through the Organizing
Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG).

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS)
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Annie Sumioka reported on the events and programs that took
place during the month of April. On April 11, an orange themed Bunco event was held with 25
participants. Bunco includes a light lunch, three rounds of Bunco, dessert, and raffle prizes.
On April 18, the annual Spring Fling event was held with a Royal Ball theme. Participants were
dressed in their best attire. The event included lunch, live music, games, raffle prizes, and an
award for the “Belle of the Ball” contest. Fit and Talk is going great. The program is offered
every Thursday at 10am for a 30-minute workout with a new workout each week. Taste the
Town is a popular program where seniors meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia each
month. In April they met at Dings Garden featuring authentic Chinese food.
RS Sumioka reported on upcoming events and programs in May. On May 2, senior
participants will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with food catered from a Mexican restaurant,
dessert, music, entertainment, and raffle prizes. On May 9, the Arcadia Community Center is
hosting the annual 50+ Resource Fair. The event will provide resources and referral booths
providing information on essential services, legal services, transportation, education, housing,
and much more. Lastly, RS Sumioka was happy to report that a new Recreation Coordinator
has filled the vacant position at the Community Center. The new Recreation Coordinator,
Marisol Martinez, will be overseeing senior seminars, Monday Dance, Information & Referral
Program, Senior Lunch Program, and many more programs and events. Marisol was
previously a Recreation Leader II and was promoted in April 2025.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD)
Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reported
the Resource Fair on May 9, will be different this year and it will not include health information.
A Citywide Health Fair will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025. DDRCS Cheung
reported Law Day will be free on Saturday, May 17. Registration is required and participants
will be able to meet with an attorney free of charge for 20-minutes. DDRCS Cheung reported
the Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park starts Thursday, June 26 through July 31, 2025.
DDRCS Cheung reported National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 in
partnership with the Arcadia Police Department. There will be plenty of activities, a live band,
and much more.

Arcadia Senior Services play an integral part in the wellbeing of the senior community. The multitude of
programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the
participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

Billiard Room
The Arcadia Community Center offers three billiard ool tables are
available Monday through Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm for
seniors to enjoy themselves and make new friends.

Blood Pressure
Check
Free blood pressure checks are available the second Tuesday of
the month from 10-11am in the Community Center. 10
Bridge
Bridge is available Wednesdays from 10am-1pm and Fridays
from 1-4pm. Card games can help improve memory and
cognition. It also enhances motor skills and promotes
socialization.

Classes
Exercise plays a vital role in a person’s health and contributes to
bone density, increases muscle strength, flexibility, and can also
reduce stress. Some of the classes offered are Zumba, Line
Dance, Cardio Plus, Pilates, Strength Training and more.

Fit & Talk
On Thursdays, Fit & Talk meets for a fun and easy 30-minute
workout. Each week there are different workouts available such
as Line Dance, Zumba, Seated Yoga, and Senior Olympics.

Gift Shop
The gift shop sells jewelry, hand crafts, and unique items made
by senior crafters for a great price. The Gift Shop is located at the
Community Center and open to the public.

Referral Intakes
The Information & Referral (I&R) program assists seniors with
issues that affect their quality of life by providing I&R referrals that
address their living concerns.

Karaoke
Karaoke is available on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
Karaoke is a popular program where participants enjoy singing to
their favorite songs in different languages.

Lions Sight
The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia
Lions Club. The program offers low-income seniors free vision
care. Prospective Clients are screened to make the necessary
arrangements for their free service.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a popular game of Chinese origin played by four
people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player
secures a winning hand. Participants are welcome to play every
Friday from 12:30 to 3pm.

Monday Dance
Monday Dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each
month. The program provides a good atmosphere for participants
to show off their dance skills and meet new dancers. A live band
plays a variety of popular music to dance to. The cost is $3 at the
door and includes refreshments.

Monthly Bus
Pass
Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Center and
can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes are $5 per month. 20
Pinochle
Pinochle meets every Monday from 9am-2pm. Pinochle is a trick
taking ace ten card game of German origin usually played by two
to four people with a 48-card deck.

Senior Meals
Program
Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday. The cost is $3 for
individuals who are 55 years or older and $4 for individuals who
are 50-54 years of age. Lunch is served promptly at 11:30am with
the option to reserve a meal ticket online.

Sing along with
James
Sing along with James meets every Wednesday from 1-3pm in
the lobby area. James plays his guitar and sings songs from
different eras. Participants enjoy singing along for fun and
socialization.

Table Tennis
Table Tennis is available for seniors to play and make new
friends. Table Tennis is open Monday-Friday, from 8am-4pm,
with equipment provided.

Taste the Town
Each month participants meet at a different restaurant to have
lunch and socialize. This month lunch was held a Kyuramen
restaurant in Arcadia featuring authentic Japanese dishes.

Weekly Movie
A weekly movie is available for seniors to watch every Tuesday
at 12:30pm. Movies shown this month: Everything, Everywhere
All at Once, Bao, The Swimmers, Parasite, and The Boy & the
Heron.

Cinco De Mayo Celebration
On May 2, seniors celebrated Cinco de Mayo with traditional Mexican food, music, entertainment and
dancing.
50+ Resource Fair
On May 9, the Arcadia Community Center held a community resource fair which included many referral
information booths.
You’ve Got
a Friend
This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who live
alone, feel lonely, or need someone to check in on them. New
friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed.

Legal
Assistance
The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization
is available once a month at the Community Center to provide
seniors with legal insight.

Tech Talk
Tech Talk is provided for individuals who need assistance with
their electronic devices. Volunteens are available every month
from 4-5pm to assist with their questions and devices.

Cinco de Mayo
Celebration
On May 2, seniors celebrated Cinco de Mayo with traditional
Mexican food, music, entertainment and dancing.

On May 9, the Arcadia Community Center held a community

Bingo
On May 16, participants enjoyed eight games of Bingo, lunch, and
a chance to win a raffle prize. 68
Coffee with
The Mayor
Coffee with the Mayor is held on the third Tuesday of the month,
where seniors can stop by to listen and chat with the Mayor about
City issues and topics of personal interest.

Social Hour
The Senior Social Hour program was held on May 30, with a
Jeopardy theme. There were fun and lively rounds of questions
including quizzing participants throughout the decades. The
social hour allows participants to get to know one another.

Arcadia
Travelers Club
Support services include registering members for trips, signing up
new members, and handling the Club’s correspondence. A
monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss
future trips and provide a social gathering.
