RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER — Vice Chairperson Mediana called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Commissioner Ayala
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Ayala, Cheung, Golsby, and Mediana
EXCUSED: Vanni
A motion was made by Commissioner Ayala, seconded by Vice Chairperson Mediana, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Chairperson Vanni.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Ayala reported he continues to enjoy the residential parks throughout the City with
his family. Commissioner Ayala inquired when the resurfacing of the Tierra Verde Park tennis
courts will take place. Deputy Director Public Works Services Department (DDPWSD) Carmen
Masud informed the Commissioners the resurfacing project should be completed by the end of
June 2025.
Commissioner Cheung stated she is looking forward to Mayor Kwan as the Council Liaison for
the Recreation and Parks Commission. Commissioner Cheung reported the Community Campout
sponsored by the Arcadia Parks Foundation was a successful event. The rainy weather had some
families leave after the movie but overall, the campout was a nice community event.
Commissioner Cheung reported the Arcadia Parks Foundation will be having a park enhancement
day planting a butterfly garden in Newcastle Park on Saturday, May 17.
Commissioner Goldsby — No Report
Vice Chairperson Mediana reported he recently sent an email in to report graffiti at Terra Verde
Park. Director Recreation and Community Services Department (DRCSD) Sara Somogyi thanked
Vice Chairperson Mediana for reporting the graffiti. DRCSD Somogyi commented it is always
helpful to receive these reports from pro -active citizens in the community.

CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of April 9, 2025.
It was moved by Vice Chairperson Mediana, seconded by Commissioner Goldsby, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a.
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
Project Updates
DDPWSD Masud reported Newcastle Park renovations are progressing well with plumbing for the
bathrooms being installed, playground equipment arriving, and concrete preparations for the
future Pickleball courts taking place. DDPWSD Masud reported the Public Works Services
Department will be hosting a Shred Day in the parking lot of the Arcadia Public Library on
Saturday, May 17.
b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department
DRCSD Somogyi reported the new Butterfly Garden will be planted by volunteers at the
Newcastle Park construction site on Saturday, May 17. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Arcadia
Parks Foundation is making a generous donation to the project and the Public Works Services
Department is preparing the area by digging the holes for the 300 plants that will make up the
garden.
Monthly Reports
DRCSD Somogyi reported on several senior programs in the month of April. DRCSD Somogyi
reported 39 seniors participated in Fit & Talk, a program that engages seniors in different gentle
impact physical activity each week. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Gift Shop had 148 shoppers
come through. DRCSD Somogyi reported Karaoke continues to be popular with 77 participants.
DRCSD Somogyi reported the Monday Dance had 191 participants. DRCSD Somogyi reported
the Senior Meals Program served 1,190 meals. DRCSD Somogyi reported 200 seniors
participated in Sing Along with James. DRCSD Somogyi reported AARP concluded the Tax
Assistance Program with 140 seniors being assisted with free tax filing. DRCSD Somogyi reported
Bunco had 25 participants. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Spring Fling Royal Ball event took place
with 53 participants who enjoyed food, music, and dancing.
DRCSD Somogyi reported on several recreation programs and activities in the month of April.
DRCSD Somogyi reported the Afterschool Program had 4,698 children in attendance. DRCSD
Somogyi reported the Co -Ed Youth Volleyball League had 850 participants. DRCSD Somogyi
reported Kid's Night Out had 45 children in attendance. DRCSD Somogyi reported the annual
Teen Egg Hunt had 237 teens participate. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Spring Eggstravaganza
had approximately 1,000 people participate in this egg hunt for youth 12 years and younger.
DRCSD Somogyi reported the Community Campout took place in April. 125 people enjoyed a
night of dinner, family activities, a movie, and a continental breakfast in the morning. This year's
Community Campout included the addition of traffic grade barriers around the perimeter of the
City Hall lawn. This provided an extra barrier of safety that helped participants focus on the fun of
the event. These barriers will remain up through September to help ensure the safety of several
upcoming City events including the Summer Concert & Movie Series on Thursday evenings
beginning June 26 and continuing through July 31.

Vice Chairperson Mediana adjourned the meeting at 6:30pm to June 11, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the
Recreation and Community Services Department Conference Room, at 375 Campus Drive,
Arcadia.
